Agenda item: (to be completed by Board staff) USF Board of Trustees ( March 7, 2013) Issue: Proposed Ph.D. in Integrative Biology ________________________________________________________________ Proposed action: New Degree Program Approval ________________________________________________________________ Background information: This application for a new Ph.D is driven by a recent reorganization of the Department of Biology. The reorganization began in 2006 and was completed in 2009. The reorganization of the Department of Biology, in part, reflected the enormity of the biological sciences, and in part, different research perspectives and directions taken by the faculty in each of the respective areas of biology. Part of the reorganization was to replace the original Ph.D. in Biology with two new doctoral degrees that better serve the needs of the State and our current graduate students by enabling greater focus of the research performed to earn the Ph.D. The well-established and highly productive faculty attracts students to the Tampa Campus from all over the United States as well as from foreign countries. The resources to support the two Ph.D. programs have already been established in the Department of Biology and are sufficient to support the two new degree programs. The reorganization created two new departments; the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology (CMMB) and the Department of Integrative Biology (IB). This proposal addresses the creation of a new Ph.D., in Integrative Biology offered by the Department of Integrative Biology (CIP Code 26.1399). E-mail [email protected] Received: 15 June 2017 Returned for revision: 12 July 2017 Editorial decision: 11 September 2017 Accepted: 14 September 2017 • Background Pathogens often secrete molecules that mimic those present in the plant host. Recent studies indicate that some of these molecules mimic plant hormones required for development and immunity. • Scope and Conclusion This Viewpoint reviews the literature on microbial molecules produced by plant pathogens that functionally mimic molecules present in the plant host. This article includes examples from nematodes, bacteria and fungi with emphasis on RaxX, a microbial protein produced by the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae. RaxX mimics a plant peptide hormone, PSY (plant peptide containing sulphated tyrosine). The rice immune receptor XA21 detects sulphated RaxX but not the endogenous peptide PSY. Studies of the RaxX/XA21 system have provided insight into both host and pathogen biology and offered a framework for future work directed at understanding how XA21 and the PSY receptor(s) can be differentially activated by RaxX and endogenous PSY peptides. Lecture Overview In her lecture, Ronald emphasizes the importance of developing sustainable agricultural practices that will allow the world’s population to be fed without destroying the Earth. Ronald demonstrates that modern genetics approaches have facilitated development of new crop varieties that can increase crop yields while reducing insecticide use. She proposes that the judicious incorporation of two important strands of agriculture—agricultural biotechnology and agroecological practices—is key to helping feed the growing population and she provides compelling examples to support her stand. In Part 2, Ronald discusses one of the greatest challenges of our time: how to feed the growing population in the presence of disease and environmental stresses that threaten the world’s crops. Currently, twenty-five percent of the world’s rice is grown in flood prone areas. Ronald and her colleagues characterized a gene, Sub1A, that confers tolerance to two weeks of flooding. They demonstrate that transferring Sub1A to a highly intolerant rice species is sufficient for the crop to tolerate submergence in water. Ronald shifts gears to discuss another gene, Xa21, that she and her colleagues discovered that controls the rice immune response. -

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: OPENING UP THE CONVERSATION: AN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF SCIENCE BLOGGERS Degree Candidate: Gregory Michael Masters Degree and Year: Master of Arts, 2013 Thesis Directed by: Dr. Carol L. Rogers Philip Merrill College of Journalism Over the past decade, science blogs have experienced tremendous growth and changes in organization, becoming an important part of what researchers have called the “evolving science media ecosystem.” This thesis explores the practices and perceptions of science bloggers through 20 in-depth interviews and through a review of the blogs themselves. The research suggests areas where this medium is having a unique impact on how science communication occurs. The interview results revealed that science bloggers are motivated mainly by enjoyment, have a wide variety of routines and reporting/writing processes, strive to incorporate a personal touch, and are very engaged with readers and fellow writers through social media. This research found that science blogs have important roles in complementing other forms of science communication, opening aspects of science to wider view, promoting conversations about science through blog comments and social media, and exploiting digital tools to enhance communication. Extreme China Back for Season 2 on National Geographic Another season of extreme adventure into China’s most formidable landscapes will bring even more amazing stories of China to viewers around the globe HONG KONG, DECEMBER 28, 2018 – National Geographic has announced that its popular documentary series Extreme China will be returning for a second season in 2019. A joint production collaboratively created by National Geographic and the China Intercontinental Communication Centre (CICC), the series’ return was announced in December at the Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival in China. Extreme China follows National Geographic explorer and photographer Ben Horton as he teams up with Chinese adventurers to journey into China’s most extreme landscapes in search of local communities that are not just surviving but thriving.
