Name: Stan Rowan Career Record: http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=163 55&cat=boxer Nationality: British Birthplace: Liverpool, England Hometown: Liverpool, Merseyside, United Kingdom Born: 1924-09-06 Died: 1997-01-01 Age at Death: 72 Stan began boxing with the Grafton Services Club & Caryl Gardens ABC. As an amateur he won Lancashire & Cheshire Junior Titles at two weights before winning the senior Flyweight Title at the age of seventeen. After turning professional in 1942 his first opponent was Eddie Douglas, whom he beat at the Liverpool Stadium in four rounds, 28 August 1942. Overall Stan had nine fights that year, winning seven and drawing two. He won another five bouts in 1943 before joining the Royal Air Force. Before taking up his post in the RAF there was time for one more contest against Frank Kid Bonser of Nottingham at the Tower Circus, Blackpool, on 20 January 1946. Whether his mind was distracted by his call-up to the RAF we will never know, but Stan was knocked-out for the only time in his career in the eighth round. Stan then left for wartime service in Rhodesia thus putting his career on hold for a couple of years. However, he got back to business in 1946 losing only one of six bouts beating Jacky Hughes, Mickey Jones, Tommy Madine, Norman Lewis and Mickey Colbert. Stan was now being talked about as a possible challenger for the British Title. The then champion Johnny King, who had held the title since 1932, was coming to the end of his career when he defended and lost his titles to Jackie Paterson at Belle Vue, Manchester on 10 February 1947 on a seventh round stoppage.

THESIS POLYGAMY ON THE WEB: AN ONLINE COMMUNITY FOR AN UNCONVENTIONAL PRACTICE Submitted by Kristen Sweet-McFarling Department of Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2014 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Lynn Kwiatkowski Cindy Griffin Barbara Hawthorne Copyright by Kristen Sweet-McFarling 2014 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT POLYGAMY ON THE WEB: AN ONLINE COMMUNITY FOR AN UNCONVENTIONAL PRACTICE This thesis is a virtual ethnographic study of a polygamy website consisting of one chat room, several discussion boards, and polygamy related information and links. The findings of this research are based on the interactions and activities of women and men on the polygamy website. The research addressed the following questions: 1) what are individuals using the website for? 2) What are website members communicating about? 3) How are individuals using the website to search for polygamous relationships? 4) Are website members forming connections and meeting people offline through the use of the website? 5) Do members of the website perceive the Internet to be affecting the contemporary practice of polygamy in the U.S.? This research focused more on the desire to create a polygamous relationship rather than established polygamous marriages and kinship networks. This study found that since the naturalization of monogamous heterosexual marriage and the nuclear family has occurred in the U.S., due to a number of historical, social, cultural, political, and economic factors, the Internet can provide a means to denaturalize these concepts and provide a space for the expression and support of counter discourses of marriage, like polygamy.

MARRYING POLYGAMY INTO TITLE VII ∗ Hope Marie Deutsch Polygamy, a word of Greek origin, the literal translation of which is “often married,” 1 is a hotly contested practice often subject to misinterpretation.2 Polygamy (sometimes called “plural marriage”)3 is the marriage or union of multiple partners, which can manifest as one husband with multiple wives or one wife with multiple husbands. 4 In modern day society, polygamy almost exclusively takes the form of polygyny, the practice of one husband with multiple wives, as opposed to polyandry, the practice of one wife with many husbands. 5 The generation-spanning taboo associated with plural marriage has kept polygamy out of sight and out of mind until recently, when the influx of high profile lawsuits challenging anti-polygamy laws 6 and television shows such as Big Love7 ever so delicately reminded us of the age old practice that we all know we oppose, but are just not sure why. Polygamy is distinguishable from polyamory insofar as polygamous partners participate in either legal or spiritual marriages while polyamorous partners partake in a variety of relationship styles such as dating or commitment to exclusivity but do not have the ideal or goal of marriage.8 More specifically, polyamory denotes a relationship of love which is grounded in the * Associate Editor of Research and Writing, Rutgers Journal of Law and Religion; J.D.
