The 31 prototype LRC locomotives were built by Bombardier between 1981 and 1984. Powered by a 16 cylinder Alco 251F producing 3700 HP, these locomotives were designed for high speed operation on existing track. They lasted in service on VIA until 2001. Two locomotives and ten coaches were also leased to Amtrak and operated in service between New York and Boston. Our HO scale model was scaled directly from the prototype and includes all of the details that you would expect from Rapido. All units feature the same smooth running drive com- ponents as our acclaimed FP9 locomotives. Sound-equipped models will include custom decoders utilizing sounds record- ed from unit 6521 at Exporail in Montreal, Canada. After many delays these models are finally scheduled fro production as soon as The Canadian and FP9 production is complete. Amtrak tested the LRC locomotive in the Northeast and Midwest between 1980 and 1982. It could be seen hauling both LRC and Amfleet cars in service on numerous routes. This will make an excellent and unique addition to the fleet of any Amtrak fan and is vital for those of us who have an appreciation for oddball bits of railroad history.

The LRC demonstrator locomotive could be seen in tests across Canada and the United States in the 1970s. In September 1975 it achieved the Cana- dian speed record of 129 MPH (Jason adds: which was blasted to bits by the Turbo a mere seven months later! So there!). However, the demonstrator proved the viability of the LRC concept and paved the way for the future of intercity operations

$100 from every sale of LRC locomotive number 6917 will be donated to the Toronto Railway His- torical Association, the volunteer-led organiza- tion that owns the real #6917. The funds will spe- cifically be earmarked towards the repainting and exterior restoration of the locomotive to as-new condition. TRHA already has the funds to get 6917 operational, so these donations will help make her nice and pretty!

VIA Rail Canada used the sleek LRCs for the ma- jority of its intercity service in the Quebec City- Windsor Corridor beginning in 1981. Their LRCs operated for twenty years. The last loco was retired in 2001. One of the last units, VIA #6905, was used for test runs of the Nightstar “Renaissance” in 2000.

LRC locomotive #6922 was painted in this striking blue scheme by the shop crews at VIA’s Montreal Maintenance Centre. It was just a test and never actually ran in this scheme, but we thought it looked so amazing that we are releasing 6922 as it would have looked had it been returned to service in blue. The prototype only wore this scheme on the front and right side. We’ve applied it to the entire locomotive so you can have this striking blue engine pulling your Rapido blue and yellow cars around your layout.
