Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

The anthology drama has been assumed by scholars to be DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1015184ar consonant with a critical discourse that valued realism, intimacy and an unremarkable, self-effacing, functional style—or perhaps even an “anti-style.” See table of contents A close analysis of non-canonical episodes of anthology drama, however, reveals a distinctive style based on long takes, mobile framing and staging in depth. One variation of this style, associated with the CBS network, flaunted a virtuosic use of ensemble staging, moving camera and attention-grabbing Publisher(s) pictorial effects. He becomes friends with one of the Eloi, Weena, when he saves her from drowning. After she dies in a fire, the Time Traveller is forced to escape from the Morlocks on his own. He does, and then takes his time machine even farther into the future to see the end of the world. He leaves again the next day, and though he says he will return, the Time Traveller is never seen again. Chapters 1 and 2: We meet four men at dinner discussing time travelling. Written by Martin Grams, Jr. The trial-and-error system being an old if frequently painful institution in the show business (else all stage plays would be hits, and all radio programs would have an Amos and Andy average in the Crossley ratings), the Columbia Broadcasting System’s Forecast series shrewdly dramatized the fact that there is no such phenomenon as a sure thing. For two particular seasons, the CBS people enlivened summer’s somewhat lethargic air waves with a schedule of experimental entertainments which, to tell the truth, aren’t experimental in the exact sense of the word, but have nevertheless a refreshing air about them, if only for the ideas they represented. The idea is that neither CBS nor anyone else knew, until they were produced, whether the programs were any good or not, though they were of course, hoping for the best. And, very sensibly, they made a game of it. Whereas the listener during the busy season was told to take what he got and, if possible, like it, Forecast invited criticism. Listening to the various episodes, one could not help but applaud for Marlene Dietrich in "The Thousand and One Nights," and convulsed with laughter as they listened to the amorous antics of "Mischa the Magnificent." (Mischa Auer, that is.) Whatever it was that made people bet on horse races or write letters to the editor, they could file an honest opinion about the programs and then sat back to await the verdict. -

In the interview segment, ER's guest is producer and director Arch Oboler. Participants: ER, Elliott Roosevelt, Arch Oboler [ER:] What have you today? [Elliott Roosevelt:] Well, I think I have a very interesting question today which I'd like to hear you discuss. Do you think the United States should be helping countries apparently friendly to us, and yet communist? Yugoslavia, for example. Particularly when there are so many others who fought with us who need the same help? [ER:] Well um, that question and-and the evident slant is that we should not be helping Yugoslavia. I think uh, that the person who wrote it was not taking into account the situation as it faces us in Europe today. Eh you have to remember when you are deciding a policy, uh just exactly what the whole situation you face is. Now, there are many people in Europe who fought with us and many people in Europe whom we fought against, all of them need help both those who fought with us and those who fought against us. Uh we are helping those who fought against us because we feel that um it's better to have free nations in the central part of Europe. They voted not to arm Germany, eh and I, personally, think that may be a wise uh thing. And--but I think they must be free and able to stand on their own feet um otherwise they're always a prey to communist ideas. -
