Maryland Benefits from Airports - Maryland’s economic well-being is interconnected with its vibrant airport system and its robust aviation industry. The State’s aviation system allows the community at-large to capitalize on an increasingly global marketplace. - Aviation in Maryland both sustains and leads economic growth and development. Protecting and investing in airports will support the aviation industry and sustain the industry’s positive impact on local, regional, and state economies. With continued support, Maryland’s dynamic aviation system will continue to provide a significant economic return in the years to come. - When the regional and local economic impacts of Maryland’s 34 public-use general aviation and scheduled commercial service airports (excluding Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport) are added together, over 9,900 jobs can be traced to the aviation industry. These employees receive more than $583 million in total payroll, and generate nearly $1.1 billion in total economic activity – over $867 million in business revenue and $272 million in local purchases. - The total employment numbers for Maryland’s public-use general aviation and scheduled commercial service airports includes nearly 5,000 direct jobs created by airport and visitor activity at these airports. Over 2,300 jobs were supported in local economic sectors as a result of purchases for goods and services by those 5,000 directly-employed workers; and, over 2,600 indirect jobs were supported by over $272 million of local purchases by airport tenants. - Nearly $583 million dollars in personal wages and salary income was created in the State of Maryland by the activity at these 34 airports. -

Since it is a publication of the State, the emphasis is on the agencies of the State Government; that part having to do with local govern- ments is not intended to be more than a directory. Sketches of individual governmental agencies contain, at the very least, evidence of the legal status of the agency, its functions, the name of the administrator and the members of any governing body or commission, the number of persons employed, appropriations for fiscal years 1955 and 1956. A list of current publications of all agencies is given in a separate section. The cooperation of many State agencies is gratefully acknowledged. Special mention is due the following: James P. Brock and Mary L. Wilson of the Secretary of State’s Office; Carl N. Everstine, Director of the De- partment of Legislative Reference, who cared for changes in the Constitu- tion; Janet L. Hoffman of the Fiscal Research Bureau, who prepared the governmental chart; William H. Bayliff, who brought up to date “Maryland at a Glance.” In one way or another most of the staff members of the Hall of Records have a hand in preparing or publishing the MANUAL. -

News and Notes from THE PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY January 1976 Vol. IV, no. 1 Committees and Committee Projects for 1976 Besides the election of officers for 1976 which was reported in the December 1975 issue of News and Notes, the other major item of business at the November meeting was the naming of committee members. Three of the committees of the Society will present major reports to the membership at the first meeting in March 1976. These committees are 1. Bylaws. Over the years the bylaws of the Society have become somewhat outdated. A revision is being prepared. 2. Collection. From time to time artifacts have been offered or presented to the Society. The lack of a permanent headquarters to house such material has caused us to tread lightly in this area. The major question to be considered by the committee is what our future commitment to a Permanent collection should be, as well as the ways and means for caring for the same. 3. Library. As in the case of artifacts, books and other library material have been presented to the Society. In recent years, almost daily requests for information on county history are received. The committee will report recommendations as to whether we should proceed with the development of a full-fledged library on local history. The dream of flying goes back to the ancient world, from the mythological flights of Icarus and Daedalus, even Tthough the first heavier-than-air flight did not occur until 1903. Over the last 111 years, and especially since the dawn of commercial aviation in 1914, humankind has managed to make huge steps in aviation. From what was originally an expensive, for-adventurers pursuit, flying has now become accessible to an ordinary person. Without aviation, the world would be a completely different place. The air transport industry has become a key component in the globalization of the world, with airlines regularly traveling across national borders transporting people and cargo. This book provides a timeline of key moments in commercial air transport history. I have made my best effort to include as many key moments in aviation history as possible, and to provide the most accurate dates for the events that influenced the evolution of the air transport industry.
