This is the first Hill Directory of Madison-Mayodan and is completely standardized according to the policies and practices of the Association of North American Direc- i- tory Publishers. Confidence in the growth of Madison-Mayodan's indus- try, population and wealth, and in the advancement of their civic and social activities, will be maintained as sec- tions of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Madison-Mayodan to the world. Four Major Departments The four major departments are arranged in the follow- ing order: I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the first major de- partment of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of Madison-Mayodan arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings—a catalog of all the ac- tivities of Madison-Mayodan. Preceding this catalog, like- wise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertise- ments and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In progressive communities like Madison-Mayodan, the necessity of having this kind of in- formation up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary be- tween buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, industrial and profes- sional world. II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Madison- Mayodan, and the name, official personnel, nature and ad- dress of each firm and corporation in the city. INTRODUCTION III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUD- ING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, is the third major department, printed on green paper. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order- followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers. IV. THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY is the fourth major department, printed on blue paper. Municipal Publicity The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions ol the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location as a manufacturing site and as an educational center To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries where they are readily available for free public reference' and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Madison-Mayodan. There are more than 700 of these Di- rectory Libraries, installed and maintained in the chief cities of the U. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.

All rights reserved. Lieutenant Colonel Robert Mebane Introduction Robert Mebane, 1745–1781, was a distinguished high-ranking military officer during the American Revolution. He was son of Alexander Mebane I, 1716–1793, who settled his family in Hawfields, North Carolina, about 1748. In 1775, Captain Robert Mebane was an active member of Orange County militia. He participated against the Tory Highlander uprising in early 1776. He participated against the Cherokee uprising during September 1776. In November 1776, he was appointed lieutenant colonel and second-in-command of the newly created North Carolina Seventh Regiment of the Continental Army. In 1777, Mebane may have participated in the battle at Brandywine Creek, Pennsylvania. He probably participated in the battle at Germantown, Pennsylvania. He certainly spent the following winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. He was in the Army division commanded by Major General Marquis de Lafayette. In May 1778, he was reassigned to North Carolina First Regiment. He participated in the battle at Monmouth Courthouse, New Jersey. Soon afterwards, he presided over a court martial of prisoners. In late 1778, he commanded 200 Continental soldiers at strategically important King’s Ferry, New York, on the Hudson River. In April 1779, General George Washington recommended Mebane to commander of North Carolina Third Regiment and ordered it southward to oppose the British attack on Georgia and South Carolina. Mebane commanded North Carolina Third Regiment of the Continental Army during the 1780 Siege of Charlestown, South Carolina.
