Sunday February 11th,1996 Vol. 3, issue 8 “If you torture the data enough, it will confess.” Warning,Achtung,Attenzionne: the ambient randomness and bizarre nonreferences contained herein grossly exceed any and all prerequisites for a contiguous and linear literary experience; you 'ave been warned. You rush from your room to class, from class to class, from class to go eat, from eating to your room, and your day is over in a blink. Soon it's your week, month and quarter gone the same way. In four years you look back and you simply can not figure out where the time went. So where does all of your time go? Of course you must know by now that we have been thinking hard about this very topic (and no, your time does not travel through a vortex straight to us. We simply maintain rock steady grade point averages of 1.2 while coming up with random thoughts to amuse ourselves). We figure there are some pretty obvious cul- prits who until now have eluded the larger public’s detection. Here's the Most Wanted List: •Santa Claus ("..you have a very nasty habit of surviving"). We can buy the fact that he can make toys for all the world's children in one year (hooray for non-existent North Pole labor laws!), but delivering all the goods in one night? Forget about it. He must suck up some of everyone's free time and use it all on his mid- night run. Think of losing your time as a trade-off for one magical, feel-good day (maybe he uses quantum physics; after all, if you believe in Santa, it's no great stretch to believe in quantum physics). -

From the Inner Mind to The Outer Limits Retrospective by Dr. John L. Flynn Introduction “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to THE OUTER LIMITS. .” Those few chilling words, when first heard on September 16, 1963, introduced what many consider the best anthology series of its kind to American audiences. The three major networks produced few exceptional television shows during the decade of the Sixties, and even fewer ones with a science-fictional premise, yet widespread acclaim for The Outer Limits has continued more than thirty years after its untimely cancellation. Like its predecessors, including Tales of Tomorrow, Science Fiction Theatre and The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits offered some bewitching excursions into the realm of science fiction; but it also journeyed beyond the limitless regions of time and space into the human soul. Nearly everyone who remembers the series fondly recalls the monsters that appeared in their living rooms week after week. -

During the same period, Henderson published an equal number of non-People stories. Like the stories of The People, they range from comforting to unnerving. Zenna Henderson Zenna Chlarson Henderson (1917–1983) was born in Tucson, Arizona. Although she became a teacher because the nearest state school was a teacher’s college, Hender- son later stated she’d rather earn her living teaching first grade than any other way. She would make time to write before school and at the end of the day. All her writing exhibits a warmth, gentleness and a sense of the worth of human and non-human beings. -

Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Nat Segaloff and Tim Richmond, July 2019 Nat Segaloff is a writer, broadcaster, teacher, film historian, and raconteur with a varied background in motion picture publicity, journalism, and producing. He is the author of A Lit Fuse: The Provocative Life of Harlan Ellison https://www.nesfa.org/book/a-lit-fuse/ Tim Richmond wrote the authorized bibliography of Ellison's work, "Fingerprints on the Sky." It was the product of 20 years of research and chronicles the entire canon of Ellison’s work over nearly seven decades and across all mediums. Gary Denton: What is the best explanation to what happened to ‘The Last Dangerous Visions”? Nat Segaloff: Tim has a more detailed answer but, in my opinion, Harlan got involved in other projects with tighter deadlines. He also, I suspect, was intimidated by the expectation of people who bought the Dangerous Visions® books not only for the stories but for his remarkable introductions. Those took time and energy and, moreover, demanded a chunk of his emotional energy. There is a difference between writing fiction (which Harlan could do efficiently) and writing literary analysis, which is what the Dangerous Visions® books demand. Tim Richmond: The tome that is LDV sits in a filing cabinet unfinished. There are a number of reasons for this which I will try to explain although it is/was a touchy subject for Harlan. For starts he really wasn't keen on doing it from the outset. The process that he had established was arduous and took away from other writing projects.
