Each year, thousands of scholars from many academic disciplines across the globe travel to meet in a major American city to share and discuss their research at the conference in a number of venues: panel presentations, round- tables, special sessions, film screenings, local tours, keynote speaker events, special awards ceremonies, and other events. This year’s conference is held at the Wash- ington Marriott Wardman Park hotel in Washington, D.C., from April 17-20, 2019. The hotel is located next to the Metro, which allows easy access to downtown D.C. and its attractions, and is within walk- ing distance to Dupont Circle. The confer- ence schedule is available on the website with full details on each day’s offerings. I am excited about various special events that have been decided on and organized with the Washington, D.C., venue specifically in mind. First, I am honored to present this year’s PCA/ ACA Presidential award to White House correspondent April Ryan. Ms. Ryan is the only black female reporter covering urban issues from the White House since the Clinton Administration. She serves on the board of the White House Correspondents Association and is a member of the National Press Club. In addition to her daily work as a journalist, she frequently appears as a political analyst on CNN and many other tele- vision programs, including Anderson Cooper 360 and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She is the author of The Presidency in Black and White (2015), At Mama’s Knee: Mothers and Race in Black and White (2016), and Under Fire: Reporting from the Front Lines of the Trump White House (2018). Ms. Ryan will be giving a conference keynote address, followed by a book signing. Please check the schedule for location and time. 5 Secondly, the Association will bestow the prestigious Ray and Pat Browne Award for Contributions to the Popular Arts to multi-award winning actor Doug Jones, who may indeed be the most famous per- son you may not recognize face to face—but you’ve definitely seen him as Abe Sapien in Hellboy; Pan and the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth; the lead “Gentleman” in the famous “Hush” episode of television’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer; the “Amphibian Man” and romantic lead of The Shape of Water, winner of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Picture; and most recently Commander Saru in the CBS All Access series, Star Trek: Dis- covery. In additional to these well-known roles, he will also be speaking about his work in short films with a special purpose, including The But- terfly Circus and The Candy Shop. Please check the schedule for location and time. On a personal note, I also want to thank all of you for your support during the past two years while I have had the privilege of serving you as President of the Association. My term ends at the close of the Wash- ington, D.C., conference, at which time I will be handing the ceremonial gavel to Dr. Kathy Merlock Jackson as the new President. Under her leadership and that of our new Executive Director, Dr. Lynn Bartholome, the Association will continue to thrive. I want to thank these two ex- traordinary women, as well as the Governing Board of the Association and the rest of our hardworking former and current professional staff, for helping lead the Association into the future. I have been honored to work for the entire membership as your President and will always con- sider this service to be a personal and professional highlight of my life. On behalf of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Associ- ation, I would like to thank all of you for your dedication and service not only to this organization, but the larger cause of the scholarly study of popular culture. I look forward to seeing you in Washington, D.C.! • Youtube and the Vernacular Rhetorics of Web 2.0
i REMEDIATING DEMOCRACY: YOUTUBE AND THE VERNACULAR RHETORICS OF WEB 2.0 Erin Dietel-McLaughlin A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2010 Committee: Kristine Blair, Advisor Louisa Ha Graduate Faculty Representative Michael Butterworth Lee Nickoson ii ABSTRACT Kristine Blair, Advisor This dissertation examines the extent to which composing practices and rhetorical strategies common to ―Web 2.0‖ arenas may reinvigorate democracy. The project examines several digital composing practices as examples of what Gerard Hauser (1999) and others have dubbed ―vernacular rhetoric,‖ or common modes of communication that may resist or challenge more institutionalized forms of discourse. Using a cultural studies approach, this dissertation focuses on the popular video-sharing site, YouTube, and attempts to theorize several vernacular composing practices. First, this dissertation discusses the rhetorical trope of irreverence, with particular attention to the ways in which irreverent strategies such as new media parody transcend more traditional modes of public discourse. Second, this dissertation discusses three approaches to video remix (collection, Detournement, and mashing) as political strategies facilitated by Web 2.0 technologies, with particular attention to the ways in which these strategies challenge the construct of authorship and the power relationships inherent in that construct. This dissertation then considers the extent to which sites like YouTube remediate traditional rhetorical modes by focusing on the genre of epideictic rhetoric and the ways in which sites like YouTube encourage epideictic practice. Finally, in light of what these discussions reveal in terms of rhetorical practice and democracy in Web 2.0 arenas, this dissertation offers a concluding discussion of what our ―Web 2.0 world‖ might mean for composition studies in terms of theory, practice, and the teaching of writing.

LEE.DOC 9/3/2008 4:50:06 PM WARMING UP TO USER-GENERATED CONTENT Edward Lee* Conventional views of copyright law almost always operate from the “top down.” Copyrights are understood as static and fixed by the Copyright Act. Under this view, copyright holders are at the center of the copyright universe and exercise considerable control over their exclusive rights, with the expectation that others seek prior permission for all uses of copyrighted works outside of a fair use. Though pervasive, this conventional view of copyright is wrong. The Copyright Act is riddled with gray areas and gaps, many of which persist over time, because so few copyright cases are ever filed and the majority of those filed are not resolved through judgment.

While the term Three Amigos and the scholarship that analyzes their early works from a transnational perspective seeks to other them and distinguish them from Hollywood, I argue that the three filmmakers did not depart from a place of difference, and that they embraced Hollywood filmmaking all along, from the beginning of their careers, to the most recent Academy Award recognitions.
