Puerto Varas Essential 4 Days ____________________________ PUERTO VARAS ESSENTIAL 4 DAYS SUMMARY Day 1: Transfer to Puerto Varas - Afternoon excursion to Frutillar, Llanquihue and Puerto Octay. Day 2: Explore Chiloé Island Day 3: Osorno Volcano and Petrohué Falls Day 4: Breakfast and airport transfer DETAILED ITINERARY Day 1: Transfer to Puerto Varas - Afternoon excursion to Frutillar, Llanquihue and Puerto Octay. Take a short transfer from Puerto Montt Airport to Puerto Varas. Check-in to your hotel and get ready for an afternoon of gorgeous views, charming towns and heaps of history! Your afternoon excursion begins by exploring the endearing town of Llanquihue. Nestled on the quiet shores of Llanquihue Lake, it is best known for its cured meats and natural environment. Afterwards, you’ll continue along a scenic route to Frutillar, a small town reminiscent of Bavaria, where its first settlers came from. Absorb the Chilean- German cultural blend by tasting a freshly baked kuchen in one of Frutillar's many bakeries or simply by admiring the town’s German-style architecture and perfectly manicured gardens. You can also stroll along one of the many black- sanded beaches as you marvel at the magnificent volcanoes in the distance. If you’re a history buff, check out the German Colonial Museum, an optional part of the excursion that offers a glimpse of what life was like for early settlers. Lastly, you’ll visit the Lakeside Concert Hall, a venue which hosts concerts and music festivals each year drawing visitors from all over the world. Your last stop will be at the delightful and captivating town of Puerto Octay. Offering cultural heritage and German-infused architecture, take in the tranquility of the town as you roam the quiet streets and its beaches. Return to Puerto Varas for a relaxing evening at your hotel. Day 2: Explore Chiloé Island- Ancud, Dalcahue and Castro (Full Day Excursion) After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll set off to explore Chiloé Island, a magical destination rich in culture and tradition! The day begins with a short ferry ride that crosses the Chacao Channel, the body of water that separates Chile’s mainland from the island of Chiloé. While onboard, keep a lookout for sea lions, Chilean dolphins, pelicans and other marine animals, as it is common to spot them in the channel. You’ll disembark in Chacao and travel along a picturesque road that leads to the enchanting town of Ancud. Here, you’ll explore the remains of a Spanish military fort (San Antonio Fort), visit the Plaza de Armas (town square), tour historic churches and leisurely walk through the town’s handicraft and gastronomical market. Next, you’ll continue on to Dalcahue, a village that lies in front of Quinchao Island (one of Chiloé’s smaller islands). You’ll observe Chiloé’s culture as you explore Dalchaue’s waterfront market and visit the Nuestra Señora de Los Dolores Church. Built by Jesuit missionaries, it is one of the islands’ nearly 150-wooden- tiled churches and is known for being one of the sixteen Chilote churches declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Your last stop will be at the capital of Chiloé’s big island, Castro. You’ll experience this vibrant and lively town by visiting the San Francisco Church, the largest arts and crafts fair on the island and a postcard worthy lookout offering views of the world-famous colorful stilt houses, known as the “palafitos.” After a short ride, you’ll board the ferry and travel back to your hotel in Puerto Varas. Day 3: Osorno Volcano and Petrohué Falls After a night’s rest, you’ll set off for another adventure in the Chilean Lakes District. Today’s excursion offers sweeping views of distant volcanos, fresh mountain air and breathtaking natural landscapes. The day begins at the magnificent Osorno Volcano. After a short drive into the Andes, you’ll ascend halfway up the volcano to the Osorno Volcano Ski and Mountain Center (1,240m). You’ll have approximately one hour to enjoy the panoramic views of Llanquihue Lake, the Andes Mountain Range and weather permitting, the Pacific Ocean. At the viewpoint, you’ll also have the option to indulge in a hot chocolate at the center’s cozy coffee shop or take a chairlift to a higher viewpoint (1,750m). Afterwards, you’ll carry on to Petrohué, a well-known destination located on the shores of Todos los Santos Lake inside of Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. Following a gentle trail among evergreen trees, you’ll be in awe of the remarkable volcano views and the somersaulting, turquoise river beside you. After paying an entrance fee, you’ll arrive to one of the most beautiful sites in the region, Petrohué Falls. After taking a pause to marvel at the falls and snap photographs, you’ll continue on a 5KM walk along the slopes of the Osorno Volcano. To finish the day, you’ll board 40-minute navigation in Todos Los Santos Lake. While onboard, rest your legs and enjoy the peaceful landscape that surrounds you! Day 4: Breakfast and airport transfer Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before boarding a transfer to the airport. Island Studies Journal, Vol. 10, No. 1, 2015, pp. 49-70 Affordance of landscapes and economic socio-spatial networks in the Quinchao archipelago, Chile: a contribution to landscape research and island studies. Carlos Hidalgo Universidad de los Lagos, Chile [email protected] Francisco Ther Universidad de los Lagos, Chile [email protected] Gonzalo Saavedra Universidad Austral, Chile [email protected] and Asunción Díaz Universidad de los Lagos, Chile [email protected] ABSTRACT : This article presents research which analyzes landscape transformation, using an interdisciplinary approach embedded in an archipelagic context. The investigation unfolds in Quinchao, a cluster of ten islands of the Quinchao Department, Chiloé archipelago, Región de Los Lagos, Chile. The investigation gathers reflections from such disciplines as anthropology, geography, biology and psychology which share similar reflections on the configuration of landscapes as an affordance or enabled property of the human-in-ecosystem assemblage. Ethnographic interpretations and Social Network Analysis of fieldwork data are used to propose a theoretical framework for the investigation of coastal and marine landscapes in archipelagic contexts. Keywords : archipelago, affordance, Chiloé, dwelling, island studies, landscapes, Quinchao, socio-ecological system © 2015 – Institute of Island Studies, University of Prince Edward Island, Canada Introduction: Global-local intersections and island studies In recent years, some debate has emerged around the idea of ‘archipelagic thinking’ in island studies scholarship. Island studies, or nissology (Baldacchino, 2008; Depraetere, 1991), has advocated an inquiry into islands “on their own terms” (McCall, 1994, p. 6) and, regardless of the rich philosophical and political contributions it has made, debates on the nature of islands and island life, colonialism and other related topics have not quite been able to efficiently address theoretical and methodological challenges that we were warned about by Baldacchino (2008).

  • Round the Llanquihue Lake
Round the Llanquihue Lake A full day spent exploring the corners of this magnificent lake. The third biggest of South America, and the second of Chile with 330sq miles. It is situated in the southern Los Lagos Region in the Llanquihue and Osorno provinces. The lake's fan-like form was created by successive piedmont glaciers during the Quaternary glaciations. Trekking Desolacion trail. Volcán Osorno, Petrohué falls,Emerald Lake. Trekking : Vicente Perez Rosales N.Park. Desolation Pass. Overview: Profile: Adventurous Difficulty level: medium. Season: November to late March Other trips you might find interesting: Solitario Hike Parque Nacional V, Perez Rosales. Cochamo Walls and river Hike, Tagua Tagua Hike. We depart early in mornig from Puerto Varas to Petrohué on the shores of Todos Los Santos Lake. On our way to the lake, we’ll pass through areas that are the mouths of the rivers which flow from the sides of Osorno Volcano. On warm days, it is possible to see what appear to be dust clouds arising from the flanks of the volcano. In reality, these are ash clouds raised by the flowing waters making their way down the flanks of the volcano. We will cross vast areas of black ash mixed with the lashes from the Calbuco eruption in 2015 and have been brought down by the glacial melt. You will appreciate the might of the volcano as you see the results of the ash flows experienced during its eruptions. One can only imagine what it must have been like during its periods of activity. Leaving Petrohué, we head upward toward the base of Volcano Osorno (8,730 feet). Our trek takes us through Osorno’s volcanic canyons where amazing rock formations are etched out of the canyon walls by the melting snows and glaciers of Osorno. As we head upwards to Desolation Pass, at an altitude of 5,610 feet between the Osorno and Cerro La Picada volcanoes, we will also see a wide variety of lava formations created by the lava flows that built Osorno.
