    LADY THATCHER CELEBRATED HER 80TH BIRTHDAY LAST NIGHT WITH 650 GUESTS Andrew Pierce reports The Times Friday, October 14, 2005 BARONESS THATCHER had the perfect excuse to be a little late last night for her 80th birthday party in the presence of the Queen, Tony Blair and some unlikely names from the show-business world. She was delayed by an unexpected telephone call from President Bush wishing her a happy birthday. The ten- minute call from the White House was the latest in a series of tributes that poured in from around the world. It marked yet another highlight in the life of a woman who still casts a huge shadow over the Conservative Party. The red carpet was rolled out for Lady Thatcher, who was dressed in a navy blue cocktail coat and silk chiffon dress designed by Camilla Milton. Lady Thatcher, who looked frail, made no public comment as a crowd of wellwishers lined the streets to catch a glimpse of Britain's first woman Prime Minister. The 650-strong guest list was a roll call of honour from the 1980s Thatcher heyday. Michael Portillo, who was once seen as her anointed heir, made a surprise appearance. He said: "She was influential in her day but not now." But the former Prime Minister also sprinkled the list with some surprise names from both sides of the political divide. The Queen, in a shimmering silver dress, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Prime Minister were the principal guests at the drinks party in the gold-embossed ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Hyde Park, in Knightsbridge.

Some titles were published during the Second World War (1939 –45), sometimes in a smaller size when ink and paper were in short supply. These pieces of sheet music are secondhand, old and naturally enough, they may show signs of wear and tear. However, most of them are in excellent condition but in a few cases we consider that some damage such as edging tears, a shop stamp, pen marks or a signature are reasonable imperfections considering the age of these manuscripts. There are no detailed descriptions here as to the exact condition of the music listed below but please e-mail us for an honest appraisal of any particular piece or title.     part one The Walker Brothers 1965 - 1967 The Walker Brothers released three LPs, ten singles and two EPs in the UK between 1965 and their split in 1967. Happily, the tracks from all these records are now easily found, with them all being included on the Everything Under the Sun 5-CD box set. 1965 1. Pretty Girls Everywhere (Church/Williams) Original release: single A-side 1965 Hardly an essential item, the Walker Brothers’ first single doesn’t have too much in common with the successes that followed it. For one thing, in place of majestic heartbreak or any deep emotion, ‘Pretty Girls Everywhere’ finds John and Scott singing a cheerful ditty that is slight in the extreme. There are, you guessed it, pretty girls everywhere, and the lyric does nothing more than tell us where the singers have found them - on the beach, in the park (long after dark) and at the rodeo on horses!1 ‘Pretty Girls Everywhere’ had originally been a US Top Ten R&B chart and Top 40 pop hit for its co-composer Eugene Church in 1958. For the Walker Brothers’ version, the song is given more of a contemporary ‘beat’ feel and a brassy arrangement to replace the call and response backing vocals of the original. The result is not a bad record, just not a great or original one and not a success. It is John’s rather than Scott’s voice that dominates the record. In retrospect, given Scott’s outstanding vocal talent, that might seem odd - a bit like having Jimi Hendrix in your group and having him play the drums on your debut single.
