@thrilljockey breeze Only Up Written, recorded and mixed in 8 days, Only Up is the second Breeze album by producer and artist Josh Korody (Nailbiter, Beliefs). Enlisting a whirlwind of performances from Tess Parks, Cadence Weapon and an array of the Toronto music scene, including members of Orville Peck, Tallies, Vallens, Zoon, Sauna, Fake Palms, Rapport, Praises, Civic TV, Moon King, Blonde Elvis, For Jane, Ducks Ltd, TOPS and Broken Social Scene, Only Up sees Korody digging through and channelling three decades of anthemic British bands. From the angular guitars of late 70’s post-punk (Gang Of Four, Wire), to the lush gloom of 80's electro-pop (, OMD), with the dance floor psychedelia of the Manchester sound (Primal Scream, Happy Mondays), and through the late '90s and early 2000s post-punk / new wave revivalists, Only Up celebrates it's sound cathartically.

When originally asked to make this album for indie label Hand Drawn Dracula, Korody and his long time music collaborator Kyle Connolly (Orville Peck, The Seams) quickly threw down ideas in a session, however with Connolly embarking on a world tour, and with Korody's demanding schedule at his Candle Recording Studio, the project sat unattended. The horse still bucks, the band still funks, and well...the fire still burns.

That’s right—Country Funk is back.

In the summer of 2012, a new sound blew in from the dusty desert. It was a sound difficult to pin down, to codify; a sound that, like some wild horse, resisted one’s grasp. But this was no trend, no flash–in–the–pan movement, no shotgun marriage of styles, no ma’am. This sound went back decades, back to the latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s, when adventurous artists started to blend country hoedown harmony with the elation of gospel, the sexual thrust of the blues and a touch of inner city grit. This was a new sound with a simple name: Country Funk.

Country Funk 1969–1975 (LITA 083, 2012), first released in 2012 and co–produced by Zach Cowie, Patrick McCarthy and Matt Sullivan, brought together a disparate group of artists that were neither bound by geography nor a shared ideology, but connected through the simple feel of their songs. Country Funk is alternatively playful and melancholic, slow jammin’ and booty shakin’. It’s a sound both studio slick and barroom raw, as evident in the artists featured on Volume I: Johnny Adams, Mac Davis, Dale Hawkins, Tony Joe White, Bobbie Gentry, Larry Jon Wilson, and many others. Just two years later, we chased Volume I with a new collection of songs for Country Funk II 1967–1974 (LITA 116, 2014). Volume II didn’t let up, dealing out all the loose–talking and lap–steel twangin’ one could handle. Heavy hitters like Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and J.J. Cale shared barstools with the lesser known voices of Bill Wilson, Donnie Fritts and Thomas Jefferson Kaye.

With Country Funk Volume III 1975–1982 (LITA 194) we’re here to say there’s more funk left in the trunk yet. This time around, the jeans are tighter, the hair is bigger and the disco ball spins along to a country–synth beat. Produced and compiled by Jason Morgan (Bay Area DJ/collector) and Patrick McCarthy (co–producer/compiler of Volume I & II), the tracklist features regulars Dolly Parton, J.J. Cale, Larry Jon Wilson and Tony Joe White (whose track is released here for the first time) alongside new faces like Steven Soles, Gary & Sandy, Conway Twitty, Travis Wammack, Billy Swan, Rob Galbraith, Brian Hyland, and so many more. As the 1970s began to wane and the 1980s approached, the Country Funk pallet expanded to include disco beats, heavy Moog synth bass lines and more clavinet than you could shake a stick at. Volume III shows artists continuing to buck traditional country tropes and production while embracing modern soul, disco, and coked–up 80s synth pop. This is the true soundtrack of the Urban Cowboy. Saddle up, partners.

FEATURING SONGS FROM: The Beatles, Blind Faith, Del Amitri, , Faces, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Glen Campbell, Jimmy Cliff, The Kinks

FROM THE LINER NOTES: I wasn’t particularly planning a covers album. Gerry Marsden had sadly just died, and I was sitting around in the basement, playing major 7th chords, as you do, and I started singing “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying” to myself. So I switched on the machines with the pretty lights and recorded it. Just vocals and guitar. I sent it to STREET DATE August 6, 2021 my best man, Chad Fischer, and said, “See what you can do with this”, and he did. It sounded more than delightful to both of us. He said, “Send me another”. And so it LABEL Compass Records went, until we had ten. Quite enough for the moment. FILE UNDER Rock The song choices were simple. “Waterloo Sunset” was playing through the sound CAT# AMK N4780 system at Southampton Docks in June 1967, when I was boarding the Fairstar with my family, heading for the New World. What a sendoff. FORMAT CD PACKAGING Wallet “Wichita Lineman” has fascinated me for many reasons. It was a hit for Glen Campbell, yet written by Jimmy Webb, a master songwriter. This was intriguing in and of itself. It contains one of the greatest lines in modern music. (You know which one I’m talking about.) UPC 766397478029 I worked in my parents record store in the 60’s in Saltcoats, Scotland, and it seemed CAT# AMK N4781 Dusty Springfield always had a hit on the charts. “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With FORMAT LP Myself” was produced by Johnny Franz, whose team created the closest thing Britain PACKAGING Jacket had to the ”. Dusty Springfield’s voice is divine.

There are so many Beatles songs one could choose to try and do justice to it’s ridiculous. “Norwegian Wood” contains a classic, simple and elegant melody, and I UPC 766397478111 would occasionally perform it live in a dropped D tuning, so that one sprang to mind.

Chad suggested “Ooh La La”, the Faces song, written by Ronnie Lane and Ronnie TRACK TITLES Wood and sung by Ronnie Wood. I loved Rod Stewart and the Faces, and was 1. I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself considering a few others. However, Brooke Fischer, Chad’s wife, fancied “Ooh La La”. 2. Waterloo Sunset I’m a big fan of Brooke, so on it went. 3. Wichita Lineman 4. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) “Driving With The Brakes On” is simply one of the best songs ever written. I love Del 5. Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying Amitri, and Justin Currie’s songwriting. When I first came over to live in California in 6. Ooh La La the early 90’s I would listen to this song driving home late at night. 7. Driving With The Brakes On 8. Across the Universe “Across The Universe”... well what can you say? A staggering lyric, and equally 9. Can’t Find My Way Home beautiful music and melody. 10. Many Rivers To Cross That one BLIND FAITH album had a big impact on me in 1969. And “Can’t Find My Way Home” is one of those songs you could attempt on acoustic guitar. So that’s ALSO AVAILABLE what I did.

And lastly, we all became obsessed with The Harder They Come in the early 70’s, when it was shown in the cinemas in Melbourne. The music and sound of Jimmy Cliff transcends time. Many people have sung “Many Rivers To Cross”; indeed dare I say, it is a singer’s song. My brief to myself was to simply deliver it and not get in the way of the brilliance of the song itself. The rich sounds of Maloya and Séga music, originating from the Réunion island (as well as Mauritius and Seychelles for Séga), have recently been brought to the ears of the Northern hemisphere’s music lovers. Hailing from the French Alps, where Réunion-natives and young “metropolitan” French youngsters have been sharing parties, food and music for years, Les Pythons De La Fournaise are NEW RELEASES: NEW a flavoursome electric “Séga” band and they have already put out a couple of albums over the last decade.

Though true to the roots and spirit of the genre, they developed a special sensitivity which defined their style; and this time, they are interpreting Séga and Maloya songs under the form of a – nearly – all-acoustic orchestra : “L’Orchestre Du Piton” !

This Long-Player has got a particular sound and character, starting with a powerful four-woman choir (often sung in unison, in accordance with the Maloya tradition). The “lead” is a different singer on almost every song, which brings a variety of tone and vocal texture to the album.

Instead of keys, organ or synth, Les Pythons went for accordion ; they also brought into the studio an array of percussion, ranging from classic bongos and bells to typical instruments of the Indian Ocean : the Kayamb, the Pikeur, the Sati and most notably the Roulèr – the king of them all, majestic barrel-shelled bass drum.

On songs like “”Anon Manz Demiel”” (Let’s go and eat honey), two crazy electric guitars with intertwined riffs add a fresh element to the sound – somewhat echoeing with Esquivel’s exotica and Congolese rumba at the same time !

And the most unusual fact on this record : there is no bass guitar. Perhaps the band had a statement to make; in our modern music culture where bass plays a central role, they prove that one can move to other sounds – and appreciate the more organic deepness of percussion.

Whether or not you look into the meaning of the songs (mostly from the Réunion repertoire with a couple of Mauritian exceptions and one original “Pythons” composition), you will feel the mood of the Creole lyrics – a deep love story in “Maloya Tantine”, an hymn to slowness and indolence in “”Tou Dou””, a clumsy chat-up scene in “Malbaraise”…

And overall, a joyful, fresh and sparkly energy emanates from this “Orchestre” sound, from this exceptionally talented crew. Oté !

NEW RELEASES: NEW member & GRAMMY®-nominated Born out of the fertile 1960s music scene of the Pacific Northwest, The Surprise Package was reissue producer Hunter Lea comprised of members from The Viceroys and The Galaxies. These two bands were regulars at regional teen fairs and often played alongside The Sonics and The Wailers.

After a record deal with Columbia Records and Terry Melcher fell through, the group found themselves in the waiting room of LHI headquarters for an audition with Lee Hazlewood. Lee liked what he heard and the band was signed.

In the late 1960s, Lee went on a creative tangent into the world of psychedelia, releasing far-out tracks from Ann-Margret, The Aggregation, Hamilton Streetcar and many others. The Surprise Package recorded the album “Free Up” with Lee, featuring heavy fuzz guitar, rock organ, keyboard bass (like The Doors) and a fifteen-minute title track. Though Lee was always willing to experiment in the studio and explore many different genres, psychedelia wasn’t totally his bag. He spent a lot of the sessions in the control room drinking scotch.

“I can give you a quote from Merle Haggard,” joked Surprise Package singer Rob Lowery. “He was sitting in on one of our sessions once and he said ‘You know, I don’t understand this rock ‘n’ roll bullshit!’ I don’t think Lee understood it either, but he liked it and he was behind us.” A stadium show with Led Zeppelin, extensive touring with the Beach Boys and other national acts failed to bring success. The band parted ways with Lee and LHI, changed their name to American Eagle and put one final record out on Decca.

Remastered from the original analog tapes by GRAMMY®-nominated engineer John Baldwin, the reissue is complimented by a new Q&A interview with Surprise Package member Rob Lowery and GRAMMY®-nominated reissue producer Hunter Lea.
