Because we wero so pressed for time,-we were unable to ask for proofreaders and. checkers. Since publication, however, several cousins have checked the book through carefully and come up with changes we can make when we do Volume II. I really want to thank cousins Janet Lantowsky, and her son Kevin Lantowsky. ( Janet and Kevin may be familiar names to you as they have just taken over responsibilities for the credential committee). These cousins read the entire book carefully.. Kevin even checked the index entries out one by one! Thanks to their efforts, we can already present you with a list of corrections you might wish to make in your own books. First and foremost, we are appending a change slip which you might ^ want to glue into the book near the index where future readers can find it. Several page numbers given in the index were off by 1, but the slips explain how to work around this. The second major correction is a wow-ser! that got right by.Donna and me during publication. The printer typeset the wrong death ^ the Governor on the cover of the book! His dates should read 1590 1660' and not "1590-1658". This error should not, however, mislead researchers in future generations as the text within the book is completely correct on this point. The other corrections our cousins found were from two sources. They found a few typing errors I had made. Second, they found additional material for the fifth generation, which appears in this book as "children" only. Much of this material is on children also descended from the Curtis family. Anyone wishing to have a list of this additional information may send me a self—addressed, stamped envelope < a business size SASE) and I will send the corrections to them. As the fifth generation will be discussed in much greater detail in volume II, these corrections will ultimately be made in print, too. The Curtis family,by the way, is an excellent example of a family with respect for high-quality genealogy work. Their family book was published in 1903, and revised in 1939. I have also seen revisions published in the 1950s. At each new printing, they were able to correct and amplify old information and add more generations of descendents. WELLESPRINGS : second bucket Getting volume II done requires help and support from everyone in the family. It will require even more work than the previous volumes, as the family grows by leaps and bounds with every new generation. Donna in her column will be asking everyone to adopt a fifth generation descendant and send in family group sheets for this person and his/her children and grandchildren. I've already picked mine out. Any research current members or descendents can make in support of Donna will help us to keep research costs down, and make our dollars go further in preparing volume II. / ************************ ****'*************************** it*** i(****** From your president/editor: This seems a good time for me to say "Hil " to all who have received this newsletter and explain that this edition will be sent to every person who ordered a copy of " The Descendents of Governor Thomas Welles. 1590-1660, and His Wife, Alice Tomes" in order that they may receive the Errata (attached on page one) and explanation by Barbara. Extra copies of page one and two will be included for those who have purchased more than one copy. It might be a good idea to keep Barbara's letter inside each of the books you have purchased, as well as attaching the Errata to the index. At the time of this newsletter, we have sold about 360 of the 500 copies we had printed. We are pleased so many people have shown interest in our publication. ^{*6^ Donna and several others have begun working on Volume II. There are only two major problems. First, Donna cannot travel to all the far away places that the fifth, sixth and upward generations moved oft to, to find source material and check all the vital records, etc. This is where your assistance is very important...please read and consider Donna's letter and request on the following pages. Second, ^is trie problem that seems to stand in the way of any project's success. Yes, it's money. The association has spent thousands of dollars to publish Volume I. Volume II is going to need a lot of assistance if it is ever to be published. We are dedicated to do what we can to have Donna continue her research but when the association's reserves are depleted the genealogical research will come to a stop. This is why it is so important that you consider Donna's proposal to"Adopt an Ancestor". Also, our treasurer (Dr. Judith B. Welles, 458 Cricket Circle, Talcottville, CT 06066) would be glad to add your name to our list of donors for Volume II.This is the only road to printing Vol II. It was through the gracious donations (see Vol. I) of a relatively few that made it possible for us to take Volume I to publication. There are many important announcements throughout this edition, so enough from me...enjoy! t- , ^ ^ a QUERY: Write Pamela T.
