'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors. -

INTRODUCTION One of the missions of The Friends of Valley Forge Park is the promotion of our historical heritage so that the spirit of what took place over two hundred years ago continues to inspire both current and future generations of all people. While a simple listing of facts, it is the hope that it will instill in some the desire to dig a little deeper into the fascinating stories underlying the events presented. The following pages were compiled over a three year period with text taken from many sources, including the internet, reference books, tapes and many other available resources. A bibliography of source material is listed at the end of the book. This publication is the result of the dedication, time and effort of Mr. Frank Resavy, a long time volunteer at Valley Forge National Historical Park and a member of The Friends of Valley Forge Park. As with most efforts of this magnitude, a little help from friends is invaluable. CHAPTER 1 The American Revolution and the Post-Revolutionary Era: A Historical Legacy Introduction From 1774 to 1783, the British government and its upstart American colony became locked in an increasingly bitter struggle as the Americans moved from violent protest over British colonial policies to independence As this scenario developed, intelligence and counterintelligence played important roles in Americas fight for freedom and British efforts to save its empire It is apparent that British General Thomas Gage, commander of the British forces in North America since 1763, had good intelligence on the growing rebel movement in the Massachusetts colony prior to the Battles of Lexington and Concord His highest paid spy, Dr Benjamin Church, sat in the inner circle of the small group of men plotting against the British Gage failed miserably, however, in the covert action and counterintelligence fields Gages successor, General Howe, shunned the use of intelligence assets, which impacted significantly on the British efforts General Clinton, who replaced Howe, built an admirable espionage network but by then it was too late to prevent the American colonies from achieving their independence On the other hand, George Washington was a first class intelligence officer who placed great reliance on intelligence and kept a very personal hand on his intelligence operations Washington also made excellent use of offensive counterintelligence operations but never created a unit or organization to conduct defensive counterintelligence or to coordinate its -

Timely intelligence regarding the strength and location of the enemy was vital to the commanders on both sides. Washington gained his early experience in intelligence gathering in the wilderness during the French and Indian War. By the end of the American Revolution, Washington had become a skilled manager of intelligence. He sent agents behind enemy lines, recruited tory intelligence sources, questioned travelers for information, and initiated numerous espionage missions. Many heroic patriots gathered the intelligence that helped win the War for Independence. Their duties required many of them to pose as one of the enemy, and often incur the hatred of friends and neighbors. Some gave their lives in helping to establish the new American nation. Conclusion 27 2 1. Introduction Assassin’s Creed III is a 2012 video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It is the fifth major instalment in the Assassin’s Creed (AC) series and it is primarily set around the American Revolution. Assassin’s Creed is a series of historical fiction games, starting with the first game in the series taking place during the Third Crusade in the Holy Land, and later titles spanning from Renaissance Italy to Victorian era London. The primary story revolves around millennia-old struggle between two ancient orders, the Assassins and the Templars, woven around real-world historical events. Producer Jade Raymond has called the series “speculative fiction” (El-Nasr et al., 2008:6), and the player characters often influence important events in world history, as well as encounter significant historical figures, ranging from Leonardo da Vinci and Karl Marx to George Washington and Napoleon. -

Phoebe was the daughter of Samuel Fraunces, a West Indian who in 1762 had purchased one of the De Lancey mansions on the comer of Broad and Pearl streets and opened up a tavern there. Phoebe was Washington's house- keeper. Govenor Tryon from his refuge on the Asia, with the aid of friends on shore, planned to murder the American Commander in Chief whose truimphal procession up Broadway behind the white horses had not been forgotten. The man picked to do the job was a British deserter named Thomas Hickey, who had become a member of Washington's bodyguard. Hickey, however, fell madly in love with Phoebe's pretty face and confided to her all the details of the plan. Phobe told her father and her father told Washington. Hickey was arrested, confessed, and was hanged in the presence of twenty thousand spectators. -

A Research Paper by Katie Kitchell 2 Introduction Video games have been a source of entertainment for people of all ages since the creation of the first video game, Pong, in 1958. Over time, video games have been improved upon to provide better graphics, better stories, better gameplay, and more fun for the family. Careers are now based on the creation of video games and their development, leading to the rise of companies such as Ubisoft, Nintendo, Electronic Arts, Sony Computer Entertainment, and many others who base their entire company on the creation and selling of video games. Today, they have been integrated as an almost essential part of life, usually for younger generations but sometimes for older generations as well, some even basing their whole career on the playing of video games as game testers or online streamers. Media platforms have evolved to specially accommodate video games, such as game trailers or streamers uploading their videos to share with viewers, which in turn may inspire those viewers to go and purchase a game to play themselves. Video games today are not just about entertainment. Many of the large companies also incorporate a feeling of “experiencing” a game, immersing the player in the game’s story and characters, nurturing a connection between them to provide an in-depth experience. -
