Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution (FSG) 3Museum Conservation Institute, Smithsonian Institution (MCI) 1*[email protected] This project investigates materials and manufacturing techniques used to create twenty-one archaeological painted Andean textiles in the collection of the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian Institution (NMAI). The textiles are attributed to Peru but have minimal provenience. Research and consultations with Andean textile scholars helped identify the cultural attributions for most of the textiles as Chancay and Chimu Capac or Ancón. Characterization of the colorants in these textiles is revealing previously undocumented materials and artistic processes used by ancient Andean textile artists. The project is conducted as part of an Andrew W. Mellon Postgraduate Fellowship in Textile Conservation at the NMAI. The textiles in the study are plain-woven cotton fabrics with colorants applied to one side. The colorants, which include pinks, reds, oranges, browns, blues, and black, appear to be paints that were applied in a paste form, distinguishing them from immersion dyes. The paints are embedded in the fibers on one side of the fabrics and most appear matte, suggesting they contain minimal or no binder. Some of the brown colors, most prominent as outlines in the Chancay-style fragments, appear thick and shiny in some areas. It is possible that these lines are a resist material used to prevent colorants from bleeding into adjacent design elements. -

Supplemental Information All specimens used within this study are housed in: the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity (MGCL) at the Florida Museum of Natural History, Gainesville, USA (FLMNH); the University of Maryland, College Park, USA (UMD); the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris, France (MNHN); and the Australian National Insect Collection in Canberra, Australia (ANIC). Methods DNA extraction protocol of dried museum specimens (detailed instructions) Prior to tissue sampling, dried (pinned or papered) specimens were assigned MGCL barcodes, photographed, and their labels digitized. Abdomens were then removed using sterile forceps, cleaned with 100% ethanol between each sample, and the remaining specimens were returned to their respective trays within the MGCL collections. Abdomens were placed in 1.5 mL microcentrifuge tubes with the apex of the abdomen in the conical end of the tube. For larger abdomens, 5 mL microcentrifuge tubes or larger were utilized. A solution of proteinase K (Qiagen Cat #19133) and genomic lysis buffer (OmniPrep Genomic DNA Extraction Kit) in a 1:50 ratio was added to each abdomen containing tube, sufficient to cover the abdomen (typically either 300 µL or 500 µL) - similar to the concept used in Hundsdoerfer & Kitching (1). Ratios of 1:10 and 1:25 were utilized for low quality or rare specimens. Low quality specimens were defined as having little visible tissue inside of the abdomen, mold/fungi growth, or smell of bacterial decay. Samples were incubated overnight (12-18 hours) in a dry air oven at 56°C. Importantly, we also adjusted the ratio depending on the tissue type, i.e., increasing the ratio for particularly large or egg-containing abdomens. -

München, download unter www.zobodat.at _________ Atalanta (August 1997) 28 (1/2):43-47, Würzburg, ISSN 0171-0079 _________ A contribution to the knowledge of the Papilionidae of Rhodes Island (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) by G iovanni Sa l a & M a u r iz io Bo llin o received 6.IV. 1996 Introduction In the present work the authors report considerations about distribution, ecology, and syste- matics of the Papilionidae of Rhodes Island, based on direct observations during a spring field-trip (10.-17.IV. 1994) and on works of many authors (Fruhstorfer , Rebel , Turati , Seyer , Weiss , Koçak, Olivier ). Following investigations done on Kriti Papilionidae, the first author visited all the known sites adding some new biotopes; the first intent was searching for the food plants, the preimaginal instars, the places of flight with the feeding plants of adults. The first author, with the cooper ation of three collegues, travelled the island for more than 880 km, visiting almost all localities cited by Olivier and trying to look for new biotopes in the southern part of Rhodes; the climatic situation was in syntony with the annual trend although a disturbance in the first days of April has delayed the emergence of populations of All. cerisy at higher altitudes in the center of the island, while those at sea level have already vanished; in the intermediate area the flight period was at its peak; generally the butterflies were scarce, only All. cerisy and Manióla telmessia were found in some numbers. We didn’t find any Archon apollinus despite the search along the whole of Rhodes; we presume that the flight period had already ended for quite a time because, at least, some worn specimens should have been found; if apollinus is present on Rhodes island, it is surely very local and rare. -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Greek Island Odyssey Holiday Report 2013 Day 1: Saturday 20th April As our plane came in to land at Rhodes airport the wildlife spotting began! We had a good view of a female Marsh Harrier and Little Egret over the nearby river. Then, on the drive to the hotel, we saw a Wood Sandpiper on the same river by the road bridge. Upon our arrival in the medieval old town Andy and Denise made a quick foray into the moat and town and found Starred Agamas, Oertzen’s Rock Lizards, a Dahl’s Whip Snake and Large Wall Brown butterflies. It was late evening by then and so we sat at a local taverna for our first traditional Greek mezedes meal and discussed plans for the week ahead over a civilized glass of wine. Day 2: Sunday 21st April After a hearty breakfast at the hotel we set off on our first Anatolian Worm Lizard full day of exploration. Our first stop was the archaeological park at Monte Smith. After parking the car and with lots of butterflies flying around us, it was hard to know just what to look at first. Andy diverted our attention, announcing that he had found an Anatolian Worm Lizard, a strange creature looking more like a worm than a lizard and which is found in Turkey and Greece. On Rhodes it is recorded only in the northern parts of the island. Lesser Fiery Copper We then moved on to watch the butterflies. The first two we identified were male and female Lesser Fiery Coppers, soon followed by Eastern Bath White, and Clouded yellow. -
