2 OUTLOOK Camp Meeting — The Great Convocation By D. E. Holland Probably the greatest spiritual convocation is when our people all over the world attend the annual camp meetings. This is the time of the year when the opportunity is given for us to have great spiritual fellowship. God knew how important it was for His people to come together, and to see each other and to have the privilege to renew old acquaintances. In Hebrews 10:25 it says, "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together ... and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching". As to the closing events becoming more evident and numerous, our need for fellowship becomes more important. Camp meeting is the opportunity we have to spend extra time in studying and concentrating on God's Word and the Spirit of Prophecy. There are too many voices in the world vying for our attention and time; at camp meeting there is opportunity for quiet contemplation, for reading the Bible in a very deliberate and meaningful way. This will bring about a great compensation in our life. Camp meeting gives us the privilege of praying together, of petitioning God in our own behalf, and in behalf of those with whom we are praying. Ellen White tells us that when we pray, Christ puts one hand around us and the other around the Father, and he takes us into the very throne room of heaven, and we sit down and talk with Him as we would to a close personal friend. Taking time for personal prayer and devotions will increase our spiritual strength and help prepare us for our daily battle and the activities of life. D. E. Holland Camp meeting makes possible a period of learning that is almost second to none as great speakers from all over the world share with us their knowledge and experience. And as we sit at the feet of these learned men, our mental capacity becomes enlarged, and our appreciation for the finer things of life is enhanced. It is good for us to study again the great prophecies of Daniel and Revelation, and look again at the way-marks that have kept us in the way these many years. These tell us that Jesus is soon to come. Camp meeting is a time to let the redeemed of the Lord say so by lifting their voices to God in song. Our lives become enriched and our spirits become lifted up. The angels enjoy joining with us as we lift our voices in praise to our Heavenly Father. Miriam, the sweet singer in Israel, brought many blessings to the people who enjoyed her God-given talent. It is the same today. The many singing groups and individual talents that are in the church express in song the inmost desires of our hearts. Camp meeting is the time for special training so that we can be effective workers in the cause of God. We learn how to give Bible studies, how to hold lay evangelistic , write missionary letters, make personal contacts, share with others the way that God has blessed us in what He has done for us. Camp meeting is also to be a time when the entire community is invited to come and listen to the great truths of God's Word given by His ministers and leaders. Ellen White tells us that this time should be one of the greatest evangelistic endeavors of the entire year, when these great truths are presented in a very clear and stirring way to the entire community. We thank the Lord for the privilege that He has given us to participate in these annual convocations, and I know that this year will be no exception as we invite His presence to join us as we meet together for this time of fellowship, prayer and study.
