Commemorating the overseas-born Victoria Cross heroes A First World War Centenary event National Memorial Arboretum 5 March 2015 Foreword Foreword The Prime Minister, David Cameron The First World War saw unprecedented sacrifice that changed – and claimed – the lives of millions of people. Even during the darkest of days, Britain was not alone. Our soldiers stood shoulder-to-shoulder with allies from around the Commonwealth and beyond. Today’s event marks the extraordinary sacrifices made by 145 soldiers from around the globe who received the Victoria Cross in recognition of their remarkable valour and devotion to duty fighting with the British forces. These soldiers came from every corner of the globe and all walks of life but were bound together by their courage and determination. The laying of these memorial stones at the National Memorial Arboretum will create a lasting, peaceful and moving monument to these men, who were united in their valiant fight for liberty and civilization. Their sacrifice shall never be forgotten. Foreword Foreword Communities Secretary, Eric Pickles The Centenary of the First World War allows us an opportunity to reflect on and remember a generation which sacrificed so much. Men and boys went off to war for Britain and in every town and village across our country cenotaphs are testimony to the heavy price that so many paid for the freedoms we enjoy today. And Britain did not stand alone, millions came forward to be counted and volunteered from countries around the globe, some of which now make up the Commonwealth. These men fought for a country and a society which spanned continents and places that in many ways could not have been more different. -

“Last, but by no means least, courage - moral courage, the courage of one's convictions, the courage to see things through. The world is in a constant conspiracy against the brave. It's the age-old struggle - the roar of the crowd on one side and the voice of your conscience on the other.” Douglas MacArthur The Essay Topic: Describe a person who acted with moral courage. What can be learned from their actions and how do the lessons relate to you? During the Holocaust, it is estimated that eleven million people were killed by the Nazis and their collaborators. Fortunately, there were many who survived. Many survivors were rescued by “ordinary” people who took extraordinary risks to become an ally. Moral courage is the ability to take a strong stand on a specific issue based on one’s personal beliefs or convictions and to defend it regardless of danger or threats to personal safety. Rescuers during the Holocaust, such as Miep Gies, Carl Lutz, Vladka Mead, Oskar Schindler, Chiune Sugihara, and Raoul Wallenberg, exemplify both courage and moral courage. They displayed courage in their ability to face difficulty, danger, and/or pain without fear; they exhibited moral courage when they acted on their own values and beliefs to spare the lives of others at the risk of jeopardizing their own. Their actions serve as a model of personal triumph over adversity and inspire others to act accordingly. Step 1: Contextual Research: learn more about the history of the Holocaust, and investigate at least two of the stories of the rescuers mentioned above to inspire you to research and write your own essay on moral courage. -

Garscha Achtzig Jahre Ungewissheit Die Nisko-Aktion 1939 und ihre verschollenen Opfer Unmittelbar nach der nationalsozialistischen Machtüberahme und dem Ein- marsch der Deutschen Wehrmacht in Österreich im März 1938 setzten die neuen Machthaber eine gewaltige Welle von Flucht und Vertreibung in Gang: Durch eine Kombination von administrativen Schikanen, öffentlichen Demü- tigungen, staatlich sanktioniertem Raub und physischer Gewalt gelang es den Nationalsozialisten in nicht einmal zwei Jahren, 130.000 ihrer Rechte und ih- res Eigentums beraubte Österreicher und Österreicherinnen dazu zu bewegen, das Land zu verlassen. Der Großteil von ihnen war jüdischen Glaubens, viele waren erst durch die NS-Gesetze zu „Juden“ gemacht worden. Wem die er- forderlichen finanziellen Mittel zur „Auswanderung“ gefehlt hatten oder wem es aus anderen, unterschiedlichsten Gründen – wozu in vielen Fällen auch die moralische Verpflichtung, pflegebedürftige Angehörige nicht im Stich zu las- sen, gehörte – nicht gelungen war, dem nationalsozialistischen Machtbereich zu entkommen, geriet ins Visier der NS-Vernichtungspolitik. Der größte Teil von ihnen wurde zwischen Herbst 1941 und Ende 1942 aus Wien in die Ghettos und Vernichtungslager deportiert. Damit gelang den Nationalsozialisten innerhalb von viereinhalb Jahren die fast völlige Zerstörung einer der bedeutendsten jüdischen Gemeinden Europas: Die Wiener Gemeinde hatte sich durch religiös-kulturelle Vielfalt ausgezeich- net und einen relevanten Faktor der Gesellschaft gebildet. Ahimsa Center- K-12 Teacher Institute Lesson Plan Title of Lesson: Chiune Sugihara, Living by Gandhian Principles Lesson By: Kathleen Brown, Sulphur Springs School District, Mitchell Elementary School, Santa Clarita, CA Grade Level/ Subject Class Size: Time/ Duration of Lesson: Areas: 30 – 34 (20 - 30 minutes independent pre-reading of Language Arts, 6th grade literature selection) 1st day - 80 minutes instruction 2nd day – 60 minutes – writing assignment Objectives of Lesson: • Students will read Chpts. 12 – 19 in A Special Fate, Chiune Sugihara: Hero of the Holocaust and critically discuss the situation in which Chiune Sugihara is faced with a difficult moral decision. • Students will listen to five short excerpts from Gandhi’s life in which he was faced with making decisions regarding moral truth and action and will complete a thinking map detailing similarities between Gandhi’s experiences and C. Sugihara’s experiences. • Students will consider material presented about Gandhi and write about someone they know or have read about that has made a decision or decisions to act morally per Gandhian principles. Responses will be evaluated by the instructor based on the references and correlation with Gandhian principles, specifically facets of passive resistance. Lesson Abstract: The lesson utilizes a biographical literature selection about Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat assigned to Lithuania in 1940. He defies his superiors by writing hundreds of exit visas for Polish Jewish refugees seeking to escape Nazi persecution. By his actions, he risks his own safety and that of his family; Sugihara conducts himself according to Gandhian principles of Soul-Force and satyagraha. Lesson Content: In his pursuit of truth, Gandhi engaged in numerous acts of civil disobedience. -
