The Justice League International Reunites During Brightest Day to Hunt Down Max LordBy clairetoldmetochangemyscreennameOne of the must-read titles of the Brightest Day era. At the end of , Max Lord is one of a handful of heroes and villains who is returned to life. He immediately uses his mind-controlling powers to escape and goes on the run from a massive worldwide manhunt, spearheaded by the core of the original Justice League International: , , Captain , and (searching for over the death of Ted Kord). However, before the Justice League and their numerous allies can make much progress on their hunt, Max uses his powers on a scale never before seen and he wipes out the world's collective memory of his past deeds and identity, while also defaming the Justice League International. Only Fire, Ice, , and Booster Gold retain their memories of their foe and find themselves as the unwitting pawns in his game as Max leads them on a that just so happens to form a new iteration of their old team: with , the new Blue Beetle, and a new Rocket Red along for the chase. This book is fantastic and Giffen does a wonderful job reminding readers why this squad of B and C list DC heroes are such good characters in their own right. Perhaps none are as strong as Booster, however, as he continues his heroic character growth and arc from the wonderful 52 series. Booster wants to remind the world what really happened to his best friend Ted and will do anything to take Max down. Overall a tremendous book.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It's As Good As You've HeardBy CustomerI've heard good things about this series, but had to cut back on my comics buying the last couple of years and "Generation Lost" didn't make the cut. My very generous in-laws gave me some cash for my birthday this year, and I devoted some of it to collections like this one to catch up on some things I had to pass up. I really appreciate the hardback package, and I'm finding I prefer it over the single issues.Beyond that, the story itself is very compelling. As opposed to the silly recent goings-on in Booster Gold and the "Past Imperfect" storyline, this series honors the "Giffen League" by mining the more serious elements of that era and playing it straight. returned from the dead in Blackest Night, and is back to his mind-controlling ways. Unfortunately, no one remembers him or recognizes the threat he poses except former Justice League members Booster Gold, Captain Atom, Fire and Ice. It's a story that touches on some of the recent events in the DC Universe, but is removed enough to be read and enjoyed on its own. Judd Winnick has really matured as a writer and the art team provides solid visuals.I'm glad I waited for the collection rather than buying the bi-monthly issues only because it saved me a ton of money. If I'd bought the issues reprinted in this volume, I'd have ended up buying the more permanent hardbound edition anyway. This book takes a group of DC's second stringers, and makes them shine like stars!By R. A. McDowellI'll be the first to admit that I was a little wary about this book. But it is my policy to read anything Justice League related, and so that meant giving this a try. Don't get me wrong, the JLI was an interesting series, though it was geared more towards camp and humor. Back in the day, even then, it was doing amazing things with what were mostly second string cast characters. But in today's climate, you can get more gritty and violent, be more 'real' than at any time previously in publishing. And with the right talent, you can make ANY character shine. Well let me tell you folks, Judd Winick and his team of artists makes this book shine like our yellow sun, baby! I won't go into any detailed spoilers, but the book centers around the events of Brightest Day, specifically with Maxwell Lord's return. He's up to his old tricks, and with Herculean effort, he makes the entire world forget him. And, for whatever reason, only the members of his former team, the aforementioned JLI, remember him, and the atrocities he's committed. And so they, this rag tag band of merry men and women, set out to do what's right, and to bring him to justice and stop him before he can bring about whatever his mad scheme is. The group is made up of people who, as I said, have always been second stringers (or even lower) in the Justice League and the DCU. Fire and Ice (Both of whom I LOVE!!!), Booster Gold (Who has FINALLY started to get the mainstream attention that his brilliant character deserves as his comic becomes more and more successful.), Captain Atom, the new Blue Beetle, and a Rocket Red (Who is comedic GOLD in this book!), they are all who stand between an unsuspecting world and Maxwell Lord. We learn things, about the team members, and about the future that is to be if Maxwell Lord isn't stopped. We see glimpses of the larger mystery that spans out over the entire DCU from the events of Brightest Day... And we see characters who, lets face it, should have gotten their dues long ago. Who knows why fan favorite Booster Gold was never a bestseller before 52? Who knows why some super hot green flame babe named Fire wasn't more popular? And a dozen other questions we may never know the answers to. But what we do know is this. They are here now, in this book, which is AMAZING. It's doing so well that it's run is past 30 issues now. Bottom line folks, I enjoyed every second of this book, and I was DELIGHTFULLY surprised all along the way. I've already seen that volumes 2 and 3 are coming out this year, and I can't wait. I mean that literally. I'm gonna have to go buy the back issues. LOL If you loved the Justice League International, you will LOVE this. And if you just love super hero action, adventure, and drama at it's best, then you DO NOT want to miss this. Trust me folks, grab this book. I don't think you'll regret it.
