  • Heraldry in Game of Thrones
genealogy Article The Shields that Guard the Realms of Men: Heraldry in Game of Thrones Mat Hardy School of Humanities & Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts & Education, Deakin University, Burwood 3125, Australia; [email protected] Received: 12 October 2018; Accepted: 6 November 2018; Published: 12 November 2018 Abstract: The vast popularity of the Game of Thrones franchise has drawn a new and diverse audience to the fantasy genre. Within the pseudo-medieval world created by G.R.R. Martin, a great deal of detail has gone into establishing coats of arms for the characters and families that are depicted. These arms fulfill an extremely important role, both within the arc of the story and as part of the marketing collateral of this very successful series. This article examines the role of arms in the Game of Thrones universe and explores how the heraldic system transcends the usual genealogical display and functions more as a type of familial branding. An exploration of some of the practices and idiosyncrasies of heraldry in the franchise shows that whilst Martin sets his foundation firmly in the traditional, he then extends this into the fanciful; in much the same manner as he does with other faux-historical aspects of his work. This study is valuable because Game of Thrones has brought heraldry from being a niche interest to something that is now consumed by a global audience of hundreds of millions of people. Several of the fantasy blazons in the series are now arguably the most recognisable coats of arms in history. Keywords: Game of Thrones; A Song of Ice and Fire; heraldry; blazonry; fantasy; G.R.R.

To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim. The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things. The highest as the lowest form of criticism is a mode of autobiography. Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault. Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope. They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only beauty. There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all. The nineteenth century dislike of realism is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in a glass. The nineteenth century dislike of romanticism is the rage of Caliban not seeing his own face in a glass. The moral life of man forms part of the subject-matter of the artist, but the morality of art consists in the perfect use of an imperfect medium. No artist desires to prove anything. Even things that are true can be proved. No artist has ethical sympathies.

  • Rick Ross Shares Cinematic Music Video for “Gold Roses” Featuring Drake
RICK ROSS SHARES CINEMATIC MUSIC VIDEO FOR “GOLD ROSES” FEATURING DRAKE MEMOIR HURRICANES ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST PORT OF MIAMI 2 OUT NOW & TOUR LAUNCHES THIS MONTH (September 12, 2019 – Los Angeles, CA) Today, Rick Ross reveals the cinematic music video for his latest smash “Gold Roses” [feat. Drake]. Watch it HERE. The single continues to turn up the heat surrounding his chart-dominating new album and the hottest sequel of the summer, PORT OF MIAMI 2 [MMG/Epic Records]—out now. Get it HERE. In the video, the hip-hop legend raps next to a luxurious piano inside of a stark and chic modern mansion as a gorgeous silhouetted femme fatale watches over him. The clip matches the song’s confessional lyrics and pensive intensity before the vital and vulnerable hook from Drake. Once again, Ross makes a statement by doing what he does best, bodying verses surrounded by the finer things. “Gold Roses” continues a tradition of collaboration with Drake, spanning “Aston Martin Music,” “Lord Knows,” “I’m On One,” and, most recently, “Money In The Grave.”. Thus far, Gold Roses has clocked over 55 million streams worldwide and counting. In other big news, the four-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated multiplatinum rap icon and Maybach Music Group mastermind crashes one chart he has never crashed before. His memoir Hurricanes debuted at #11 on the New York Times Bestseller List during the most competitive season of the year. Next up, he headlines the PORT OF MIAMI 2 TOUR.
