Summary: The collection includes Rudyard Kipling correspondence, realia and books and significant first editions by Kipling as well as poetry, short stories and other writings appearing in issues of periodicals. Also includes illustrations, sheet music with settings of Kipling’s poems, scrapbooks, exhibition and auction catalogs indicating price and provenance of Kipling related items. Other Rudyard Kipling materials at the Library of Congress are located in the William M. Carpenter Kipling Collection, the Lloyd H. Chandler Kipling Collection, The Rare Book and Special Collections Division Kipling collection. Some individual Rudyard Kipling correspondence can be found in the Miscellaneous Manuscript Collection and other collections in the Library of Congress Manuscripts Division. Provenance The H. Dunscombe Colt Kipling Collection was acquired by the Library in 1984 and 1987 from Armida Maria-Theresa (Bologna) Walsh Colt (1912-2011) and includes approximately 3,100 Kipling items gathered by her husband Harris Dunscombe Colt (1901-1973), archaeologist and Rudyard Kipling collector. Colt acquired or purchased Kipling items individually or from the collections of Charles C. Auchincloss, Stanley Baldwin, Ellis Ames Ballard, Mrs. N. Ballard, Templeton Crocker, Norman Croom-Johnson, Jerome Kern, Mrs. Ford Madox Hueffer, Joseph Jackson, E.W. Martindell, George Barr McCutcheon, Violet Moore, Marguerite Steen and William J.K. Vanston. Processing History The Colt Kipling Collection in the Library of Congress Rare Book and Special Collection Division was accessioned upon arrival and partially cataloged in 1987. The collection was fully cataloged and processed in 2007-2009. Copyright Status The status of copyright in the unpublished writings of the Carpenter Kipling Collection and the Rare Book and Special Collection Division is governed by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S.C.) Access and Restrictions The Colt Kipling Collection is open to research. Researchers are advised to contact the Rare Book and Special Collections Reading Room prior to visiting. Many collections are off-site and advance notice is needed to retrieve these items for research use. Arrangement of the Records Kipling manuscripts, some collections of his correspondence, realia, drawings, photographs, scrapbooks as well as smaller groupings of newspapers, journal articles containing Kipling writings and published monographs have been cataloged and classified separately in Library of Congress Classification order in the Colt Kipling Collection.
