2018-2019By Addison Bent VHS Student Council elected VHS elects recently new members into Student Council. The Student Council helps in many events throughout the school year. Upcoming events include hosting open house, helping with Special Olympics, the Veterans Day assembly, and planning for Homecoming. VHS student council recently visited SIU on October 9th for a student summit (for more details visit page 6). Ms. Palmer, VHS Student Council sponser states, “I am looking forward to working with this years Student Council. All 17 are great students and are going to be outstanding leaders. Mr. West received an e-mail notifying that he had been nominated on July 19th by an anonymous student. “I was very surprised, and appreciative,” said Mr. West, Agricultural teacher and advisor/ sponsor of the FFA. The Life Changer of the Year award is given to Kindergarten through 12th educator help to recognize the staff that helps make a significant difference in the lives of students. Life Changer of the Year is sponsored by National Life Group and the National Life Group Foundation. ByStudent Sami Kerley Council participates in Civics Forum On October 9th, VHS Student Council attend a Civics Forum sponsored by the McCormick Foundation and the Paul Simon Institute at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. The purpose of the forum was for students to get involved in exploring and offering solutions to the issues of school violence and the opioids crisis in our nation. The first session of the forum dealt with school violence and safety issues. Next Student Council members also heard various experts lead a discussion on opioids. After listening to speakers, the students split up into groups with different schools to discuss these two topics.
