BENNOCHY ROAD, KIRKCALDY KY1 1ET ONfife BOX OFFICE TEL 01 592 583302 @ONfife www.onfife.com Wed 1 July 7.30pm Rosewater Rating 15 I Running Time 103 mins I USA I 2014 Directed by Jon Stewart Starring Gael García Bernal, Kim Bodnia, Dimitri Leonidas Jon Stewart – globally adored liberal icon and presenter of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show – adds a new string to his bow as writer/director of this shrewd, heartfelt movie about the ordeal of Tehran-born BBC journalist Maziar Bahari (Bernal), who was detained without trial, tortured and interrogated as an alleged US spy for 118 days. Rosewater is a nuanced, moving film which wrings pathos, and unexpected humour, from distressing truth.

Thur 2 July 7.30pm Girlhood Rating 15 I Running Time 113 mins I France I 2014 I Subtitled Directed by Céline Sciamma Starring Karidja Touré, Assa Sylla, Lindsay Karamoh Céline Sciamma’s third feature is a classic coming of age drama, set in the tough suburbs of Paris and centred around 16-year-old Marieme (Touré) and her struggles with peer pressure and self-discovery. Girlhood puts us inside a ghetto society and challenges us to share the lives and yearnings of those who want to find a way out – but it also celebrates the immediate, impulsive here and now, and the result is honest, empowering and electrifying.

Fri 3 July 7.30pm Top Five Rating 15 I Running Time 102 mins I USA I 2014 Directed by Chris Rock Starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg A candid, fresh and ferociously funny snapshot of life in the celebrity bubble, Top Five is a meta-fictional tale in which Chris Rock plays Andre Allen – an Eddie Murphy figure with roots in stand-up, millions in the bank and a hunger to reinvent himself. The real triumph here is a lightness of touch that allows a sustained and vicious attack on celebrity culture to sit neatly beside Rock’s frequently hilarious set-pieces without ever overwhelming them.

Sun 5 July 7.30pm Phoenix Ratin g 15 I Running Time 98 mins I Germany/Poland I 2014 I Subtitled Directed by Christian Petzold Starring Nina Hoss, , Nina Kunzendorf In the immediate aftermath of the Second World War and the holocaust, a disfigured concentration-camp survivor (Hoss) – unrecognizable after facial reconstruction surgery – searches what is left of Berlin for her husband Johnny (Zehrfeld), who may or may not have betrayed her to the Nazis. A film about disguises, reinventions and deception, Phoenix is a haunting portrait of identity, loss and the search for answers in the ashes of post-war Berlin. Wed 8 July 7.30pm Lambert and Stamp Rating 15 I Running Time 117 mins I UK I 2014 Directed by James D. Cooper Starring , , A rockumentary with a difference, Lambert and Stamp is the story of Kit Lambert and his working-class business partner Chris Stamp, who started out wanting to make a New Wave film and ended up managing The Who. Packed with footage of the early years of the band, the film is colourful and humorous in its evocation of Swinging and celebration of Lambert's idiosyncrasies.

Thur 9 July 7.30pm / Fri 10 July 11am A Royal Night Out Rating 12A I Running Time 97 mins I USA I 2015 Directed by Julian Jarrold Starring , Emily Watson, Rupert Everett, On V.E. Day in 1945, as peace extends across Europe, Princesses Elizabeth (Gadon) and Margaret (Powley) are allowed out to join the celebrations – and so unfolds a night full of excitement, danger and the first flutters of romance. A Royal Night Out is a poignant and entertaining affair with a satirical edge and a quite exceptional performance by Gadon as the cocooned young princess adjusting to life beyond the palace gates.

Fri 10 July 7.30pm Pitch Perfect 2 Rating 12A I Running Time 115 mins I USA I 2015 Directed by Elizabeth Banks Starring Sarah Gadon, Emily Watson, Rupert Everett, Bel Powley The sequel to 2012’s riotous a cappella hit opens in fine style with an accidental mooning of the president thanks to a wardrobe malfunction, and doesn’t let up from there. Reprising the first film’s cast – including the brilliant Kendrick and Wilson double act – as well as its uproarious spirit, Pitch Perfect 2 is every bit as goofy and sweet as its predecessor, every bit as instantly quotable, and every bit as side-splittingly hilarious.

Sat 11 July 7.30pm Mad Max: Fury Road Rating 15 I Running Time 120 mins I Australia/USA I 2015 Directed by George Miller Starring Tom Hardy, , Nicholas Hoult A belated fourth instalment of George Miller’s series which defined our notions of “post- apocalyptic”, Mad Max: Fury Road is at once a welcome throwback to a time of leaner, meaner blockbusters and host to a surprisingly progressive worldview that has seen it described as a truly feminist action flick. With its spare dialogue and dazzlingly choreographed and edited stunts, Miller’s film often feels like a great silent movie – albeit a very loud one. Sun 12 July 7.30pm Clouds of Sils Maria Ratin g 15 I Running Time 124 mins I France/Switzerland/Germany I 2014 Directed by Olivier Assayas Starring , Kristen Stewart, Chloë Grace Moretz The lines between art and life blur as Juliette Binoche stars as Maria Enders, an actor whose role in a new play leads her to reflect on her career while developing a close relationship with her assistant Valentine (Stewart). With the pair holed up in an Alpine retreat, their relationship drifts fascinatingly between rivalry, sisterhood and erotic frisson, all stoked by the play they’re rehearsing, and driven by career-defining performances from Binoche and Stewart.

Wed 29 July 7.30pm Danny Collins Rating 15 I Running Time 106 mins I USA I 2014 Directed by Dan Fogelman Starring Al Pacino, Jennifer Garner, Annette Bening The first film directed by Dan Fogelman, whose previous scripts run the gamut from Cars to Crazy, Stupid, Love , Danny Collins is an appealing comedy about an old pop star discovering the true meaning of life. With an unabashed streak of melodrama, sharp dialogue and a superb ensemble cast anchored by a lead performance by Al Pacino in lovable scamp mode, this is a film that is affecting, warm-hearted and impossible to dislike.

Fri 14 Aug 7.30pm Listen Up Philip Rating 15 I Running Time 109 mins I USA I 2014 Directed by Alex Ross Perry Starring Jason Schwartzman, Elisabeth Moss, Krysten Ritter An often hilariously funny tragicomedy, Listen Up Philip is a window into the soul of the alternately self-regarding and self-loathing novelist Philip Lewis Friedman, played by the peerless Jason Schwartzman with a thoroughly unpleasant obnoxiousness. For all of its uproarious, often brutal comedy, Listen Up Philip is at heart a serious work about the struggle to follow your muse whilst existing in the real world.

Like Kapadia’s previous documentary, the Bafta-winning Senna , Amy is a patchwork of archive images and clips from home movies, concert videos, news footage, camcorded holiday memories and selfies. It is an overwhelming story, and despite everyone knowing the ending, it is as gripping as a thriller.
