Popular Imperialism: the British Pop Music Industry 1950- 1975 Richard
Popular Imperialism: The British Pop Music Industry 1950- 1975 Richard Coopey Business History Unit, London School of Economics Abstract In this paper the general contours of the British popular music industry are outlined, charting the development of new technologies, new business forms and new market structures, which transformed the sector between 1950 and 1975. The paper then goes on to introduce some concepts and ideas related to the global impact of the business, including its relationship to the USA and wider markets, and specifically the role of London as a centre for production, but also as a key cultural idea in the pop world of the 1960s. Introduction The British popular music industry developed and transformed itself during the first decades following World War Two, becoming, alongside the USA, a major force in the global entertainment industry. This paper will outline the nature of this growth, examining its components and impact. The development of the pop music industry is a complex phenomenon. There has been much interest in recent years in the relationship between business and wider cultural and social dynamics. Scholars such as Ken Lipartito, Mick Rowlinson and Geoff Jones have been part of a ‘cultural turn’ in business history, examining the role of cultures, somehow defined, in influencing and shaping business strategy, trajectories and so on. With the pop music industry, however, we need to engage with a sector which trades in culture itself. An industry involved directly in the production of culture, and calling for analysis of an increasingly challenging nature. The pop music industry did not emerge de novo in the post war period. -
Turtle Rock Guitar Book 5.Pdf
Preface to the 5th Edition This book and the Guitar Club that went with it started because one of my old counsellors put a few guitar chords into the official camp song book. Those chords were the reason I learned to play. That summer, when we were last-year campers, regular activities were cancelled one day because of stormy weather. We all piled into the lodge, where we sat with Ryley and her guitar, singing all afternoon. It was the first time a lot of us had ever sung our favourite camp songs with a guitar. At the time, I'd never even heard recordings of most of them. (This is before Napster, kids.) I remain ever thankful that we didn't play Rainy Day Bingo that afternoon. At the end of the summer I started writing in chords for the rest of the song book, which gradually led to the first edition of The Mi-A-Kon-Da Guitar Book. Since then, this book's seen a few new places and met a lot of new songs. It seemed about time to give it a name that would bring everything and everyone together. Turtle Rock does just this. On Birch Island, it's where the whole camp meets after lights out on Mi-A-Kon-Da night to sing quiet songs by the fire, listen to the camp legend, and watch the full moon rise over the lake. It's also where we meet for special cook-outs, reflections, and early in the morning to watch that bittersweet Last Sunrise of the Summer. -

The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A
The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A thesis presented to the University Of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2018 © Piacentino Vona 2018 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States. -

LAMBERT & STAMP Director’s Statement ! ! ! Throughout time Youth has always struggled to find a place in a pre-existing world in which they feel they have little place. By risking new relations and creating a sense of identity which better reflects them, they can have the power to impact a changing world by what they bring into it, -through fearless self discovery. "Lambert & Stamp" tells this story. It's universal theme of self discovery through connection with others, along with an extraordinary (and highly entertaining) set of circumstances, is what I wanted to portray in the film. ! In postwar London, two men seeking to transcend the constraints of their respective circumstances: one, the bleak reality of the East End working class, the other, a daunting aristocratic legacy, -embrace the dynamics of an unlikely relationship to pursue a shared artistic dream. -
