5 Schuyler Hospital • 2012 Community & Foundation Report Maintaining Excellence in Standards of Care... We’ve Got You Covered.

At Schuyler Hospital we are committed to maintaining a culture of performance excellence … striving to be the best we can be both as individual employees and as an organization. To us, performance excellence means providing the very highest level of clinical care, putting quality and patient safety above all else.

• In 2012, Schuyler Hospital was recognized by the NYS Cancer Registry for “Completeness and Timeliness of Cancer Reporting.” The recognition specifically praises the Hospital’s Medical Records Department for meeting the requirement of reporting every six months on the number of cancer patients admitted or observed by Schuyler Hospital.

• Following an April 2012 NYS Department of Health Survey, Seneca View is now a Four-Star rated facility on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website, which compares nursing homes across the country using a five-star rating system. This Four- Star rating means that statistically, of all the Department of Health surveys done across the entire state of New York, Seneca View scored in the top 33 percent. This is outstanding, and reflects the dedication and hard work staff put into providing quality care and services at Seneca View.

• For the sixth year in a row, Schuyler Hospital’s Radiology Department passed the United States Food & Drug Administration (USFDA)’s annual Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) inspection with flying colors. Congress enacted MQSA to ensure that all women have access to quality mammography for the detection of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. The rigorous inspection evaluates equipment, staff credentials and training, policies, and performance.

• For the ninth year in a row, Schuyler Hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services Department received the Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) award from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC). This is a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services in hospitals.

Schuyler Hospital Approved as National Health Service Corps Site Schuyler Hospital now has a new advantage when recruiting primary care healthcare professionals to the area. In 2012, the hospital was approved as a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) site. This designation enables Schuyler Hospital – as a facility located in a Health Professional Shortage Area – to both hire NHSC Scholars and offer loan repayment assistance.

Created in response to the healthcare crisis that emerged in the US in the 1950s and 1960s when retiring physicians left many areas of the country without medical services, the NHSC has become an invaluable resource for recruiting primary care providers. As an approved NHSC site, Schuyler Hospital will be able to list vacancies on the NHSC Job Opportunities website and recruit practitioners who are dedicated to working in communities, like Schuyler County, where they are needed most.

“I’m getting a full night’s rest thanks to the Sleep Lab at Schuyler Hospital.”

When Jim Carmony of Cayuta had a sleep evaluation at Schuyler Hospital, he was surprised to learn that he actually stopped breathing during the night. “Sleep has always been hard for me. I would wake up every 30-45 minutes. The next day, I would have a headache and still feel tired. The sleep study was a positive experience. The staff explained things well, and I was much more comfortable than I thought I would be. I actually slept!” Diagnosed with sleep apnea, Jim now wears a mask each night to keep him breathing regularly. “I’m feeling much better with a full night’s rest. My headaches are gone, and I feel refreshed when I wake up.”

Schuyler Hospital’s specially trained Sleep Lab team diagnoses and treats the full range of sleep disorders. Appointments can be made within weeks, and each patient gets individual attention.
