Western Criticism, Labelling Practice and Self-Orientalised East Asian Films
Travelling Films: Western Criticism, Labelling Practice and Self-Orientalised East Asian Films Goldsmiths College University of London PhD thesis (Cultural Studies) Ji Yeon Lee Abstract This thesis analyses western criticism, labelling practices and the politics of European international film festivals. In particular, this thesis focuses on the impact of western criticism on East Asian films as they attempt to travel to the west and when they travel back to their home countries. This thesis draws on the critical arguments by Edward Said's Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient (1978) and self-Orientalism, as articulated by Rey Chow, which is developed upon Mary Louise Pratt's conceptual tools such as 'contact zone' and 'autoethnography'. This thesis deals with three East Asian directors: Kitano Takeshi (Japanese director), Zhang Yimou (Chinese director) and 1m Kwon-Taek (Korean director). Dealing with Japanese, Chinese and Korean cinema is designed to show different historical and cultural configurations in which each cinema draws western attention. This thesis also illuminates different ways each cinema is appropriated and articulated in the west. This thesis scrutinises how three directors from the region have responded to this Orientalist discourse and investigates the unequal power relationship that controls the international circulation of films. Each director's response largely depends on the particular national and historical contexts of each country and each national cinema. The processes that characterise films' travelling are interrelated: the western conception of Japanese, Chinese or Korean cinema draws upon western Orientalism, but is at the same time corroborated by directors' responses. Through self-Orientalism, these directors, as 'Orientals', participate in forming and confirming the premises of western Orientalism. -

He can also be regarded as a renaissance man in that he is a multi- talented film editor, screenwriter, actor, comedian, television personality, painter, tap dancer and author. Each of these facets underpin his work as a director. Indeed, Kitano can be regarded as an auteur - in the truest sense - writing, directing, acting in and editing films under his company label Office Kitano, as well as employing the same personnel such as actor, Susumu Terajima, and composer, Joe Hisaishi. -

1. Title: 13 Tzameti ISBN: 5060018488721 Sebastian, a young man, has decided to follow instructions intended for someone else, without knowing where they will take him. Something else he does not know is that Gerard Dorez, a cop on a knife-edge, is tailing him. When he reaches his destination, Sebastian falls into a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors in which men gamble on the lives of others men. 2. Title: 12 Angry Men ISBN: 5050070005172 Adapted from Reginald Rose's television play, this film marked the directorial debut of Sidney Lumet. At the end of a murder trial in New York City, the 12 jurors retire to consider their verdict. The man in the dock is a young Puerto Rican accused of killing his father, and eleven of the jurors do not hesitate in finding him guilty. However, one of the jurors (Henry Fonda), reluctant to send the youngster to his death without any debate, returns a vote of not guilty. From this single event, the jurors begin to re-evaluate the case, as they look at the murder - and themselves - in a fresh light. 3. Title: 12:08 East of Bucharest ISBN: n/a 12:08pm on the 22 December 1989 was the exact time of Ceausescu's fall from power in Romania. Sixteen years on, a provincial TV talk show decides to commemorate the event by asking local heroes to reminisce about their own contributions to the revolution. But securing suitable guests proves an unexpected challenge and the producer is left with two less than ideal participants - a drink addled history teacher and a retired and lonely sometime-Santa Claus grateful for the company. -
A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Clara Bow's Image in 1920S Japan1
1JSL, Volume 1 (2005), 1–18 Hideaki Fujiki American Film Star Unsettling Japanese Culture: A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Clara Bow’s Image in 1920s Japan1 Hideaki FUJIKI In this essay, I examine the star formation of Clara Bow in relation to the rise of consumer culture and modern girls in Japan during the latter half of the 1920s. While her original images were produced in the United States, she was identified as a representative of modern girls and associated with the new audiences who were recognized as modern girls and/or the petit bourgeois class. In being so, this American star functioned to disclose contradictions between her fans’ consuming activity and their national identity, but concurrently induced reactionary discourses. Her screen persona balanced its flapper-sensationalism and other properties, such as her seemingly spontaneous characterization, socially marginalized positions, and active physical movements. This ambiguity about the star’s attributes allowed Japanese media to take advantage of this star as a controversial yet lucrative subject. It follows that the vernacular formation of this star persona involved cultural and even political conflicts among her fans’ self-defining identities, critics’ valuations and evaluations, and governmental directions. While her fans’ activity increased the diversity and mobility of people’s identities and values in the nation, critics mostly was bent on prescribing them into either/or categories of binary oppositions, such as American versus Japanese and modern versus pre-modern. Thus, the American stars unsettled Japanese culture, but turned out to enhance the reactionary trend in which to confine Japanese people into a monolithic identity. -

Takeshi Kitano Vol
UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD KITANO TAKESHI: AUTHORSHIP1 GENRE & STARDOM IN JAPANESE CINEMA PHD THESIS ADAM R BINGHAM 2009 VOL II 213 The Return of the Kids! A Scene at the Sea [1991], Kids Return [1996] & Dolls [2002] It is possible to sub-divide and compartmentally categorise the oeuvre of Kitano Takeshi in several distinct and mutually compatible ways. Thus far, the tendency in the critical discourse on his work has been, rather too readily and too easily, to focus on those aspects of his films deemed salient authorial determinants - such as the violence and tenderness - and apply this to the body of work as a whole. Thus, for better or for worse, one repeatedly finds in reviews of films such as Ana natsu, ichiban shizukana umi ... (A Scene at the Sea, 1991) and Kikujiro no natsu (Kikujiro, 1999) a focus on their lack of the violent material found in other, better known Kitano films. Similarly, a number of reviews and essays about Hana-Bi [1997] concentrated on its perceived Zen qualities, and in the US this quality of quietude and mono no aware was then read into other works that were released in the wake of 1997, even San tai yon, ekkusu ...jugatsu (Boiling Point, 1990). It is, of course, the central tenet of film authorship to evaluate one of a perceived auteur's films against the oeuvre in general. However, as the aforementioned example of Hana-Bi can amply attest, it is nonetheless the case that the common critical conceptions of Kitano Takeshi or even 'Beat' Takeshi that have gained consensus opinion have often been lazily employed, rehashed and repeated. -
