Nothing is more common than death, and yet nothing is more mysterious. What is death? Is it when your heart stops, or when your brain becomes inactive, or is it something else? And is death good or bad? Does it give life meaning? Would it be good to live forever? And what happens when we die? Is there an afterlife? What form could it take? What would we have to be like to survive our death? And is it wrong to cause death? Is killing justified in war or in self-defense? Is suicide wrong? Is physician-assisted suicide good? How should we make decisions at the end of life? And what of abortion or infanticide? These are the kinds of questions we will consider in this course. We will reflect on what philosophers have said about them, critically examining their answers with the tools of philosophy—logic—and the help of our own knowledge and experience. Your practice using these tools in class will prepare you to use them well in your papers and on your exam. LEARNING OUTCOMES So by the end of this course you should be able to: (1) better use the tools of philosophy—logic—to analyze and evaluate arguments; (2) explain and evaluate some principal ideas about the nature and value of death, including the cardio-pulmonary, whole-brain, and partial-brain theories of death; (3) explain and evaluate some principal theories of the afterlife; (4) explain and evaluate some principal arguments on the ethics of killing, including issues of war, capital punishment, self-dense, suicide, euthanasia, and abortion; REQUIRED TEXTS Philosophy and Death: Introductory Readings, edited by Samantha Brennan and Robert J.     Travelling Films: Western Criticism, Labelling Practice and Self-Orientalised East Asian Films Goldsmiths College University of London PhD thesis (Cultural Studies) Ji Yeon Lee Abstract This thesis analyses western criticism, labelling practices and the politics of European international film festivals. In particular, this thesis focuses on the impact of western criticism on East Asian films as they attempt to travel to the west and when they travel back to their home countries. This thesis draws on the critical arguments by Edward Said's Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient (1978) and self-Orientalism, as articulated by Rey Chow, which is developed upon Mary Louise Pratt's conceptual tools such as 'contact zone' and 'autoethnography'. This thesis deals with three East Asian directors: Kitano Takeshi (Japanese director), Zhang Yimou (Chinese director) and 1m Kwon-Taek (Korean director). Dealing with Japanese, Chinese and Korean cinema is designed to show different historical and cultural configurations in which each cinema draws western attention. This thesis also illuminates different ways each cinema is appropriated and articulated in the west. This thesis scrutinises how three directors from the region have responded to this Orientalist discourse and investigates the unequal power relationship that controls the international circulation of films. Each director's response largely depends on the particular national and historical contexts of each country and each national cinema. The processes that characterise films' travelling are interrelated: the western conception of Japanese, Chinese or Korean cinema draws upon western Orientalism, but is at the same time corroborated by directors' responses. Through self-Orientalism, these directors, as 'Orientals', participate in forming and confirming the premises of western Orientalism.

In his Pulitzer-winning book The Denial of Death,Emest Becker demonstrates how many of our social instifutions and psychological tendencies can be explained by the need to disbelieve in mortality.3 As I studied the ancestry of these evasions in Jacobean culture for my book The Rest is Silence: Death as Annihilation in the English Renaissance, I began noticing how ingeniously our own popular media abets our denials. The instances in novels and (especially) movies tend to be quite ffansparent: a thousand machine-gun bullets barely miss our beloved super-spy, a mourned side- kick tums up alive after all, and love stories extend into the happily ever after.
