Description and Sources Description Monitoring of ground reduction at two sites in Kingsbridge for Tesco Stores Ltd noted mainly made up ground. In the main site this overlay a sequence of alluvial deposits in the northern part of the site which are thought to relate to late post medieval and modern flooding. Macrofossils from samples taken from the deposits are indicative of a fen carr environment. The majority of finds are post medieval or modern in date but some possible residual medieval pottery sherds were recovered from the smaller, Western Power Distribution site. [See Source SDV346129] Digitised using Source SDV346129. [See Source SDV348265] Monitoring of ground reductions for the installation of drainage works undertaken on two areas related to the proposed Tesco Store, car park and service yard and the Western Power Distribution site. Within the main site, the watching brief revealed an alluvial deposit within the northern area of the site overlain by made up ground. The alluvial deposit is thought to relate to late post medieval or modern flooding events. Predominently made ground deposits were noted in the Western Power site. The only deposits of interest were possibly redeposited 19th/20th century material which contained residual post medieval or possibly medieval pottery. Environmental archaeological assessment of four samples from the alluvial deposits showed the presence of waterlogged wood and seeds. The species represented included alder, elder and fools watercress indicative of a fen carr environment. Sources Report - Watching Brief: Carter, N.. 2011. Tesco, Poplar Drive, Kingsbridge, Devon. Description and Sources Description Building recording document produced by Fuse Planning as part of a Planning Condition No. 12 attached to South Hams District Council Planning Permission in advance of the demolition of a building at Rivermaid Boatyard, Embankment Road, Kingsbridge. The survey building referred to in this report a Packet Shed, is a single storey rubble stone building located to the south side of Embankment Road (A379) that leads out of Kingsbridge to the east and the coast at Torcross around 7 miles away. The building appears to have been erected in the late 18th or early 19th century as a small warehouse (Packet Shed) related to the expansion of the quays to provide a deeper water berth to the south of the town on the east bank of the estuary. Description and Sources Description Desk-based assessment undertaken prior to redevelopment in order to place the site in its archaeological and historic context. Currently the Fusion Nightclub, the site comprises two outwardly modern buildings and a carpark. It is suggested that part of the site may overlie the site of a medieval millpond that probably occupied the lower part of the Union Road Valley. In the early 19th century there was a malthouse in the south-eastern quarter of the site and the north-eastern corner may have been part of an early gasworks. The central part of the site was occupied by a brewery in the mid 19th century which remained into the later 20th century. Geotechnical works carried out on the site highlighted the potential for contamination from both the gasworks and the brewery. Sources XY Cartographic: Ordnance Survey. 2020. MasterMap 2020. Description and Sources Description A desk-based assessment and geophysical survey was undertaken on land on Belle Hill, Dodbrooke, Kingsbridge, Devon in advance of the application for planning for the residential development of the site and for related off site analysis and reporting. The results of the geophysical survey would suggest that there are a number of undated features across the site including potentially prehistoric and medieval enclosures, field systems or leats and boundaries associated with the existing medieval to post-medieval field system. There is also potential for discrete features associated with the undated linear anomalies. Sources Report - Survey: Bampton, J.. 2016. Land on Belle Hill, Kingsbridge, South Hams. Description and Sources Description The archaeological evaluation largely validates the results of the geophysical survey (Bampton 2016). It confirmed the presence of a rectangular medieval enclosure and undated ditches probably associated with this, or a later phase of medieval or post-medieval activity. The survival of features, particularly where the topsoil was shallow and the underlying geology was solid rock, was shallow and ploughing was evident across most of the site. It is unlikely any shallow features would survive across the site. Sources Report - Evaluation: Bampton, J.. 2017.
