Astra has been a strong seller in the past and is still a well-known nameplate with a strong reputation and awareness.

The sourced Astra first arrived in Australia in 1995 (TR model)

In this section of the participant’s guide, we are exploring potential opportunities and strategies for you to achieve maximise success with your Astra sales. The temptation when we launch a new model like MY17 Astra is just to focus on the exciting new product that we will have arriving in our showroom, but that is only one part of the equation.

For a Holden salesperson, the all-new award winning Astra represents a lot to be excited about. With a stylish design, high levels of technology and a nameplate that is well-known and loved in Australia.

It’s not unreasonable to expect good enquiry from both existing Holden customers and new people to our brand.

What about the sales that YOU can create?

Astra represents opportunity there also.

Besides the traditional methods of creating new customers, the introduction of new Astra will allow you to be more targeted in how you can increase your sales.

Existing Cruze Customers Here’s a couple of questions for you to consider;

“Since the introduction of Cruze in 2009, how many were sold by your dealership?”

Compile a database of Cruze customers that have bought the car from your dealership that are more than three years old. Structure a plan to contact these people with an opportunity for them to try the exciting new Holden. For example; explain that our priority at the moment is to promote this brand new model and you would like the feedback from existing Holden Cruze customers.

“How many visit your dealership’s service department for their scheduled servicing?”

Engage the service advisors in your dealership so they can assist you with this. Encourage them to alert you when they meet someone who they believe could be a potential new Astra customer.

Here’s a potential scenario:

Service advisor Kathy has taken a telephone booking from one of her regular customers. Sandra (the customer) is bringing her 2010 Cruze CDX for a 120,000km service. As usual, she will drop her car off and will get a ride to the city in the dealership courtesy bus.

While Sandra’s car is over five years old and she could easily afford to replace it with a new one, she is not a real car person so she doesn’t pay much attention to the advertisements and is not at all familiar with the latest models or the new technologies and features available.

On the day prior to Sandra’s appointment, Kathy sent an email to Steve in new car sales, letting him know about Sandra and how she might be an ideal prospect for new Astra.

The next morning, Kathy introduces Sandra to Steve. He explains that because there is a new model Holden Astra, part of the dealership’s promotional activities is allowing their existing customers the opportunity to see the new car for themselves and it would be his pleasure to drive her into the city in the new model.

Taking a close look at the All New Astra exudes style and conveys an elegant, athletic appearance.

 A unique front fascia gives the car a low, sporty front expression.

 Whilst projector front headlamps with LED DRLS flow seamlessly into the grill.

 New 17 and 18 inch wheels compliment the overall premium sport positioning of the vehicle and are matched with side skirts and a unique Holden rear fascia.

Forward Collision Alert (FCA) Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with camera  Assist the driver in avoiding or mitigating the impact of front-end collisions.  In the event of a potential collision, FCA provides a visual warning in the instrument with reflected LED projection in the windscreen and an audible warning.  The FCA System uses the front camera mounted on the windscreen to detect vehicles.

“How will this Forward Collision Alert make my life better?”

Forward Collision Alert can alert you when you are at risk on a front end collision. Notes:

 It’s possible to adjust the gap to tailor the alert sensitivity to the driver.  The Front Camera in the Forward Collision Alert system is capable of detecting vehicles ahead up to 60 metres away.  A green telltale is displayed when FCA operating and has vehicle detected ahead. This indicates the system is ready to give further alerts.  When the driver is closely following another vehicle (tailgating), the icon turns amber in colour.

Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with Radar The FCA system uses the radar and camera sensors with a range of about 150 m to detect the vehicle ahead. This feature helps the driver reduce the severity of a crash to a vehicle they are following that is moving or has come to a stop under certain conditions. If the driver has not applied the brakes and the system detects a collision is imminent, the system will automatically apply moderately hard or hard emergency braking. It may even help avoid the collision at very low speeds. FCA with Radar works automatically above walking speed. Immediately before or at the time of automatic braking, the Forward Collision Alert system provides flashing red LED windshield “Collision Alert” and an audible warning. Auto braking can bring the vehicle to a complete stop, Auto braking can be overridden by the driver at any point in time. Operation speed:  Own velocity ≤ 40 km/h: braking with up to 1g below 40 km/h.  Own velocity > 40 km/h: braking for 0.5 s with 0.3 g and then with 1 g if necessary.

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) Low Speed City Stop

New Holden Astra’s fitted with a Forward Camera also feature Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB). AEB is automatically active when the vehicle is above 8 km/h and below 60km/h. When an imminent fontal collision is detected, FCA will first activate, warning the driver, then a brake preparation system will pressurise the brakes to “How will Automatic reduce response time. Lane Keep Assist

The Lane Keep Assist (LKA) feature assists the driver to keep the vehicle in the lane by providing a gentle steering ‘push back’ to the vehicle. The LKA prevents unintentional lane departures of the vehicle. If the applied torque is not sufficient to keep the car in the lane and the driver is not acting the driver will be warned by a chime. Note: The LKA system DOES NOT continuously steer the vehicle. The LKA system replaces Lane Departure Warning System

The system assists the driver to keep the vehicle in-lane by providing a steering push back to the vehicle when an unintended lane departure is detected.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Optional on RS-V Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses radar technology to:  Scan the road ahead,  Detect the changing speed of vehicles in front, and  Adjust the speed (using accelerator or brake) to maintain a constant distance from the car in front.

This intelligent radar based system also incorporates High Speed Automatic Emergency Braking. Helps avoid collisions at highway speeds where an imminent collision is detected.

Until recently, Adaptive Cruise Control was only available in high end premium products. As a result, it’s likely that your prospective Astra customers might be unware of the benefits or how to operate the system. It’s important that you are able to confidently demonstrate ACC and its benefits while being mindful of its limitations.

“Intellilux” Adaptive LED Matrix Headlights

Optional on RSV First in class “Intellilux” LED Matrix headlights  This is technology currently associated with high end premium European brands.

How does it work?  Consists of 16 LED segments (8 per light)  Constantly adapts the length and distribution of the light beam to every traffic situation  Allows for lights to remain on high beam by directing lights around vehicles (in front and oncoming).

Key Active Safety Features Rear Park Assist & Rear Camera (Standard) All New Holden Astra’s come standard with Rear Park assist and a Rear View Camera to make parking a breeze and worry free. The Rear View Camera also displays dynamic gridlines.

Front Park Assist Standard on RS and RS-V In addition to Rear Park Assist and a Rear Camera, the RS and RS-V models are also fitted with Front Park Assist.

Side Blind Zone Alert Standard on RS and RS-V The Side Blind Zone Alert system detects and reports objects on either side of the vehicle, within a specified blind zone. The system alerts with a visual indicator placed on each side rear view mirror, to the presence of objects that may not be visible in the inside rearview mirror and outside rearview mirrors. The system uses the ultrasonic sensors located in the rear bumper on the left and right side of the vehicle. Side Blind Zone Alert is active from speeds of 10 km/h. If then a vehicle is detected in blind spot, the warning symbols will be lit as normal on the respective side.

Advanced Park Assist Standard on RS and RS-V The Advanced Park Assist (APA) feature measures suitable parallel or perpendicular parking slot search at vehicle speeds below 30 km/h. This means the addition of two 4- metre parking distance sensors at the front and two at the back. The APA feature in the New Holden Astra operates the steering while the driver controls the accelerator, brake and gear selection.

Sport mode

Sport mode adapts the settings of some vehicle systems to a sportier driving style.

 The engine reacts more quickly to the accelerator pedal.  Steering has a sportier feel.  Shift points of occur later.  Control modes of adaptive cruise control are adapted to more sportive settings.

Activation Press SPORT when engine is running. The LED in the button illuminates when sport mode is active and a status message appears in the Driver Information Centre.

IntelliLux® LED Matrix Light Overview

New Astra’s IntelliLux® LED Matrix System is the most advanced headlamp system offered in the vehicle segment.

 Increases driving safety  Drastically reduces the stress of night-time driving.

The vehicle adapts the headlights automatically to the driving situation so that in every case the best possible light performance is given. Headlamp Assembly New Astra’s IntelliLux® LED Matrix System offers 16 elements for the high beam light distribution which are addressed individually. Based on the traffic situation, up & oncoming objects are detected by a camera and the IntelliLux© LED Matrix System glares out these objects. At 80 km/h the vehicle detects an object 30–40 metres earlier than with conventional halogen or HID headlamp systems. In this case the driver has 1.3 –1.8 seconds more time to react on the detected object.

Light System Beam Patterns

Town Light Automatically activated based on the level of exterior ambient light (city) at vehicle speeds up to 55km/h.

Cornering/Curve Light Depending on the steering wheel position or on the indicator light signal, an additional left or right reflector is switched on, and is activated up to 70km/h.

Illuminating of Parking Area The static bend light goes on to illuminate the parking area when reversing.

Country Light Relatively similar to the current low- beam., but Improves the illumination of the road and the side areas. It is activated at vehicle speed above 55km/h.

Static Curve Light Activated by vehicle speeds from 40km/h to 70km/h. Activation profile also depends on additional vehicle information such as speed, steering wheel angle and other information.

Motorway Mode The new Astra lighting system utilises vehicle information to detect if the car is on a motorway or not.

From 105km/h the light distribution on the right lane is reduced to exclude glaring when the lanes are separated by guardrails.

Energy Saving Mode When the automatic engine Stop/Start system is active the Astra’s IntelliLux® Matrix System can enable an energy saving mode.

Example of Switching LED Elements at Highway Speed The Front View Camera detects and registers approaching vehicles. Using this information the system will control the individual LED’s to suit the surrounding conditions. Vehicle Access

The keyless entry system is used in conjunction with the door locks to unlock the vehicle. Keyless entry will lock/unlock the vehicle doors or open the rear compartment lid when a corresponding button on the key is pressed. A low transmitter battery or radio frequency interference from aftermarket devices, such as 2-way radios, power inverters, computers, etc., may cause a system malfunction. High radio frequency traffic areas such as gas stations that use pay-at-the-pump radio frequency transponders, may also cause interference that could lead to a malfunction. Keyless entry allows you to operate the following features:  Door lock/unlock  Liftgate lock/unlock  Vehicle locator/Panic alarm

Key The Astra has 2 variations of keys. The R is a standard ignition key type while the RS and RS‐V has a Fob type as it is fitted with the PEPS system.

When the transmitter key is flat or not detected Manual Key Entry All models (Images show a vehicle with PEPS) If the vehicle battery or remote battery is not operational, the driver's door can be locked or unlocked with the mechanical key in the driver's door lock. The locking cylinder in the driver's door is covered by a cap. To remove the cap, press the button at the back and extract the key blade from the housing. Insert the key into the recess at the bottom of the cap and swivel the key upward. Manually unlock the driver's door by inserting and turning the key in the lock cylinder. After locking install the cap above the lock cylinder: insert the cap with the lower side in the recesses and swivel and push the cap until it engages at the upper side.

On PEPS equipped vehicles where there is potential interference (on the 125KHz or 433MHz frequencies), the electronic key fob battery is weak or fails, the Driver Information Centre may display "No remote detected" when you attempt to start the vehicle. Place the electronic key in the centre console transmitter pocket. depress the brake pedal and press the Engine Start/Stop button

Cruise Control

There will be different cruise control systems possible with Astra-K dependant on transmission type and the installation of a forward facing radar.  Cruise Control  Adaptive Cruise Control  Full Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control Conventional cruise control can keep a fixed speed by regulating engine power but will not brake going downhill.

Adaptive Cruise Control What is Adaptive Cruise Control?

Adaptive cruise control is an enhancement to conventional cruise control with the additional feature of maintaining a set distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

What does Adaptive Cruise Control do?

Adaptive cruise control automatically decelerates the vehicle when approaching a slower moving vehicle. It then adjusts the vehicle speed to follow the vehicle ahead at the selected following distance. The vehicle speed increases or decreases to follow the vehicle in front, but will not exceed the set speed. It may apply limited braking with activated brake lights.

The adaptive cruise control can store and maintain speeds over approx. 25 km/h. If following a vehicle ahead driving slower than 25 km/h, the slower speed will be set. On vehicles with automatic transmission, the system can also brake to a stop.

It is the responsibility of the driver to comply with local posted speed limits.

How does Adaptive Cruise Control work?

Adaptive cruise control uses a radar sensor to detect vehicles ahead. If no vehicle is detected in the driving path, the adaptive cruise control will behave like conventional cruise control.

For safety reasons, the system cannot be activated before the brake pedal or clutch pedal has been depressed at least once, since switching on ignition.

Adaptive cruise control should only be used on long straight roads such as highways or country roads with steady traffic that is moving at a constant speed.

Whilst adaptive cruise control offers the driver an element of autonomous operation on open roads, it does not replace the need for the driver’s ongoing attention to the road and surroundings. The driver maintains full control of the vehicle at all times as the brake pedal, accelerator and cancel switch (on the steering wheel) have priority over any adaptive cruise control operation. Adaptive Cruise Control Activation

Press switch on adaptive cruise control. The control indicator in the instrument cluster illuminates white. Additionally, appears in the Driver Information Centre.

 Adaptive cruise control can be activated over 25 km/h.  It is the responsibility of the driver to comply with local posted speed limits.

Accelerate to the desired speed and turn thumb wheel to SET/-, the current speed is stored and maintained. Control indicator in the instrument cluster illuminates green.

The adaptive cruise control symbol , the following distance setting and set speed are indicated in the Driver Information Centre. On the colour Driver Information Centre illuminates green.

The accelerator pedal can be released. Adaptive cruise control remains activated while gear shifting.

Overriding set speed

It is possible to drive faster than the selected set speed by depressing the accelerator pedal. When the accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle returns to the desired distance if a slower vehicle is ahead. Otherwise it returns to the stored speed.

Once the system is activated, adaptive cruise control decelerates or brakes if it detects a vehicle ahead, which is slower or closer than the desired following distance.

Accelerating by the driver deactivates automatic braking by the system. This is indicated as a pop-up warning in the Driver Information Centre.

Full speed range adaptive cruise control on vehicles with automatic transmission

Full speed range adaptive cruise control will maintain a following gap behind a detected vehicle and slow your vehicle to a stop behind that vehicle.

In the case of a brief stop of the vehicle ahead the adaptive cruise control will resume automatically without driver action. If necessary on some versions, press RES/+ or the accelerator pedal to resume adaptive cruise control.

If the stopped vehicle ahead was stopped for a longer time and then begins to move forward, the green illuminated vehicle ahead control indicator will flash and a warning chime will sound as a reminder to check traffic before proceeding.

When the vehicle ahead drives away, press RES+ or the accelerator pedal to resume adaptive cruise control. If stopped for more than two minutes or if the driver door is opened and the driver safety belt is unbuckled, the electric parking brake is applied automatically to hold the vehicle. The parking brake indicator will turn on. To release electric parking brake press the accelerator pedal.

When full speed range adaptive cruise control is deactivated or cancelled, the vehicle will no longer be held at a stop and can start to move.

The driver should always be prepared to manually apply the brake to hold the vehicle stationary.

Do not leave the vehicle while it is being held at a stop by the full speed range adaptive cruise control. Always move selector lever to park position P and switch off the ignition before leaving the vehicle.

Setting the following distance

When adaptive cruise control detects a slower moving vehicle in the driving path, it will adjust the vehicle speed to maintain the following distance selected by the driver.

The following distance can be set to near, medium or far.

By pressing the distance button, the current setting is shown in the Driver Information Centre. Press the distance button again to change the following distance.

The selected following distance is indicated by filled distance bars in the adaptive cruise control page.

Note that the following distance setting is shared with the sensitivity setting of forward collision alert.

Example: If setting 3 (far) is selected, then the driver is warned sooner before a possible collision. Detecting the vehicle ahead.

The green illuminated vehicle ahead control indicator is displayed when the system detects a vehicle in the driving path at a distance up to approximately 150 metres.

This is part of the Forward Collision Alert system.

If this symbol does not display, or displays briefly, adaptive cruise control will not respond to vehicles ahead.

Deactivation

Adaptive cruise control is deactivated by the driver when:

 on the steering wheel is pressed.  Brake pedal is applied.  Clutch pedal is depressed for more than four seconds.  Selector lever of automatic transmission is moved to N.

The system is also automatically deactivated when:

 Vehicle speed accelerates above 190km/h or slows below 15km/h (on vehicles with automatic transmission it slows down to a stop without deactivating within two minutes)  The Traction Control system is operating.  The Electronic Stability Control is operating  There is no traffic and nothing detected on the road sides for several minutes. In this case there are no radar echoes and the sensor may report that it is blocked.  The active emergency braking system is applying the brakes.  Driving on steep inclines.  The radar sensor is blocked by an ice or water film.  A fault is detected in the radar, engine or brake system

Additionally the system is automatically deactivated on vehicles with automatic transmission (full speed range adaptive cruise control) when:

 The electric parking brake is applied.  The vehicle is being held to a stop by the system for more than two minutes.  The vehicle stops, the driver safety belt is unbuckled and the driver's door is opened.

When adaptive cruise control is deactivated, the control indicator changes from green to white and a pop-up message is displayed in the Driver Information Centre.

The adaptive cruise control symbol changes from green to white when system is deactivated but not switched off and the store speed is maintained.

Switching off

Press to switch off adaptive cruise control. The control indicator and in the Driver Information Centre extinguish. The stored speed is deleted.

Switching off the ignition also switches off adaptive cruise control and deletes the stored speed.

Driver's attention

 Care should be taken if using adaptive cruise control on bends or mountain roads as the system may lose detection of the vehicle in front and accelerate rapidly depending on the set speed.  Do not use the system on slippery roads as it can create rapid changes in tyre traction (wheel spinning), so that you could lose control of the vehicle.  Do not use adaptive cruise control during rain, snow or heavy dirt, as the radar sensor can be covered by a water film, dust, ice or snow. This reduces or suppresses completely the radar’s visibility. In case of sensor blockage, clean the sensor cover.

System limits

 The system's automatic brake force does not permit hard braking and the braking level may not be sufficient to avoid a collision.  After a sudden lane change, the system needs a certain time to detect the next preceding vehicle. So if a new vehicle is detected, the system may accelerate instead of braking dependant on the set speed.  Adaptive cruise control ignores the oncoming traffic.  Adaptive cruise control does not brake for pedestrians, animals, very slow speed driving or stopped vehicles.  Do not use adaptive cruise control when towing a trailer or on steep inclines. Bends

The adaptive cruise control calculates a predicted path based on the centrifugal force. This predicted path considers the current bend characteristic, but cannot consider a future bend change. The system may lose the current vehicle ahead or consider a vehicle which is not in the actual lane. This can happen when entering or exiting a bend or if the apex (angle) of the bend changes. If it no longer detects any vehicle ahead, then control indicator will extinguish.

If the centrifugal force is too high in a bend, the system slows down the vehicle slightly. This braking level is not designed to avoid spinning-off the bend. The driver is responsible for reducing the selected speed before entering a bend and in general to adapt the speed to the road conditions and existing speed limits.

Highway driving

During highway driving, set the speed to suit the conditions. Always consider that adaptive cruise control has a limited visibility range, a limited braking level and a certain reaction time to verify if a vehicle is on the driving path or not. Adaptive cruise control may not be able to brake the vehicle in time to avoid a collision with a much slower vehicle or after a lane change. This is particularly true if driving fast or if the visibility is reduced due to weather conditions.

While entering or exiting a motorway, adaptive cruise control may lose the vehicle ahead and accelerate up to the set speed. For this reason, decrease the set speed before exit or entry.

Vehicle path changes

If another vehicle enters your driving path, adaptive cruise control will first consider the vehicle when it is completely in your path. Be ready to take action and press the brake pedal, if you need to brake more quickly.

Hill and trailer considerations

System performance on hills depends on vehicle speed, vehicle load, traffic conditions and the road gradient. It may not detect a vehicle in your path while driving on hills. On steep hills, you may have to use the accelerator pedal to maintain your vehicle speed.

When going downhill you may have to brake to maintain or reduce your speed.

Note that applying the brake deactivates the system.

The radar unit is mounted behind the radiator grille below the brand emblem.

“How does Radar actually work?”

Radar based systems are becoming more and more common in GM Holden vehicles. Let’s have a look into what it is and how it works, first we’ll start of with what Radar actually stands for: RAdio Detection And Ranging So how does it work? Well it uses a principle that we are all familiar with, echoes. If we are standing on top of a mountain and we shout out something, a few moments later we hear some of those sound waves returning back. The sound waves hit surfaces in the distance and then reflect off that surface causing the echo. This same basic principal is used in a radar system, but instead of using sound, radar uses radio waves. When the radar sensor module sends out its radar signal it waits for a return signal (echo). When it receives a signal it knows something is in the detection zone. The radar will also be able to tell how far away it is by measuring the time it took for the signal to get back to the radar sensor module.

Active Safety Forward Collision Alert (FCA) With camera or radar

Assists the driver in avoiding or mitigating the impact of front-end collisions In the event of a potential collision, FCA provides both an audible and visual warning with a reflected LED projected onto the windscreen, directly in the driver’s line of sight. The system uses a sensor in the front camera or a radar sensor in the grille. The default distance setting ‘mid’ but can be adjusted to “near” or “far” via the steering wheel. When the system was activated during the previous drive, it goes to the last setting the driver has selected. Operates automatically above 8km/h with the front camera input. Operates above walking speed if the vehicle is equipped with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) specific radar sensor.

Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with Low Speed Collision Mitigation Braking (LSCMB)

If the vehicle is equipped with a camera only, FCA also features Low Speed Collision Mitigation Braking (LSCMB). The system uses the camera (with a range of up to 80 metres) to detect the vehicle ahead. The FCA with LSCMB also features a different display in the DIC to inform the driver and is automatically active above 8 km/h. LSCMB works automatically above 8 km/h and below 60 km/h. When closing in too fast to a preceding vehicle the driver is warned via chime, pop-up icon in the DIC, and reflective LEDs in the windshield.

LSCMB includes

(1) Brake preparation system

When approaching a vehicle ahead at speeds that the system determines that a collision is imminent, the brake preparation system pressurises slightly the brakes. This reduces the response time, when manual or automatic braking is requested.

(2) Emergency automatic braking

After the brake preparation and just before the imminent collision, this function automatically applies a limited braking with up to 0,3 g deceleration to reduce the impact speed of the collision. This deceleration is comparable to normal braking, i.e. approaching a red light. Below 40 km/h the maximum deceleration can be increased up to 1 g to avoid the collision entirely.

(3) Forward looking brake assist

In addition to the brake preparation system and emergency automatic braking, the forward looking brake assist function makes the brake assist more sensitive. In this way, depressing the brake pedal slightly results in immediate, hard braking. This function assists the driver to brake faster and harder before the imminent collision.

Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with Collision Imminent Braking (CIB) (This system is only available on vehicles with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) as it uses the Radar as well as the Front Camera with a range of up to 150m to detect the vehicle ahead. As a result of the extended range, this system is also able to operate at higher speeds.) This feature assists the driver in reducing the severity of a crash to a vehicle they are following that is moving or has come to a stop under certain conditions. If the driver has not applied the brakes and the system detects a collision is imminent, the system will automatically apply moderately hard or hard emergency braking.

CIB works automatically above walking speed.

Immediately before or at the time of automatic braking, the Forward Collision Alert system provides a flashing red LED windshield “Collision Alert” and audible warning.

Auto braking can bring the vehicle to a complete stop, and engage the Electric Parking Brake (release with button or firm press of accelerator).

Auto braking can be overridden by the driver at any point in time.

Operation speed:  Own velocity ≤ 40 km/h: braking with up to 1g below 40 km/h.  Own velocity > 40 km/h: braking for 0.5 s with 0.3 g and then with 1 g if necessary.

CIB Includes:

1. Brake Preparation System

Lane Keep Assist (LKA)

Lane Keep Assist is operational at vehicle speeds above 60klm/h and ONLY when lane markings are available.

The system gently turns the steering wheel and the control indicator changes to yellow if the vehicle approaches a detected lane marking without using the turn signal in that direction.

LKA alerts the driver by flashing together with three chimes from the respective direction if the lane is departed significantly.

If the system only detects lane markings on one side of the road, it will only assist for that side.

Lane keep assist can detect when the driver has taken their hands off the wheel. In this case a message in the Driver Information Centre pops-up advising the driver to ‘take the wheel’ and a chime sounds as long as lane keep assist detects hands are off the wheel.

When the following conditions are met, the system will not give alerts:

 The correct turn signal is activated. An activated turn signal is interpreted as an intentional lane crossing  The driver makes an intentional steering maneuver  The driver makes an intentional accelerating maneuver  The driver makes an intentional braking maneuver

Active safety: Forward Distance Indicator

The following distance indicator displays the distance to a preceding moving vehicle. The front camera in the windscreen is used to detect the distance of a vehicle directly ahead in the vehicle's path. It is active at speeds above 40 km/h.

When a preceding vehicle is detected ahead, the distance is indicated in seconds, displayed on a page in the Driver Information Centre.

On Midlevel display, choose Info Menu via MENU on the turn signal lever and turn the adjuster wheel to choose following distance indication page.

The minimum indicated distance is 0.5 seconds.

If there is no vehicle ahead or the vehicle ahead is out of range, two dashes will be displayed: -.- sec.

If Adaptive cruise control is active, this page shows the alert sensitivity setting instead of following distance setting.

Advanced Park Assist

RS and RS-V The Advanced Park Assist (APA) measures suitable parallel or perpendicular parking spaces and searches at vehicle speeds below 30 km/h. This means the addition of two 4-metre parking distance sensors at the front and two at the rear.

The APA feature in the MY17 Holden Astra operates the steering only while the driver controls the accelerator, brake and gear selection.  APA measures suitable parallel or perpendicular parking spaces below 30 km/h.  The driver selects the type of parking space either parallel or perpendicular.  The system defaults to seeking a space on the left side of the vehicle. This can be changed to the right simply by activating the right hand indicator.  APA will notify the driver when the starting position is reached and system is ready.  A short vibration or ‘pulse’ via the steering wheel informs the driver about the automatic steering activation.  A visual pop-up and a chime indicate successful parking.

Sport mode Sport mode adapts the settings of some vehicle systems to a sportier driving style.  The engine response to accelerator input is quicker.  Steering has a sportier feel.  Shift points of automatic transmission occur later.

Activation Press SPORT when engine is running. LED in the button illuminates when sport mode is active and a status message appears in the Driver Information Centre. When sport mode is active a checkered flag icon is displayed in the DIC.

Engine Stop/Start System

(Automatic Transmission and Manual Transmission)

The Stop/Start System is used to improve fuel efficiency in stop/start driving. The vehicle automatically shuts down the engine in appropriate conditions at a traffic light, for example, resulting in zero tail pipe emissions and saving fuel which otherwise is used idling the engine when stationary. The engine instantly restarts when the driver is ready to move away.

As soon as the driver prepares to move away (by releasing the brake pedal and/or depressing the accelerator pedal), the engine will start; it only takes the system around 0.3 s to start the engine.

To support the increased number of engine starts, the starter motor is upgraded with a high performance electric motor and a stronger pinion engagement mechanism with reduced noise levels.

Along with the upgraded starter motor, advanced battery technology is required to ensure the vehicles battery can handle the frequent charge and discharge cycles common with stop/start operation. There is an intelligent battery sensor connected to the battery which continually monitors the battery charge and healthy state. The engine control module (ECM) uses this information from the intelligent battery sensor to determine if the battery charge and health is sufficient for a Stop/Start condition.

The Stop/Start system can reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 5% in mixed driving conditions. In an urban environment and in heavy traffic with frequent stops the savings may increase to as much as 10%.

For Vehicles fitted with Automatic Transmission, there are certain controls in place to help ensure the Stop/Start System does not compromise the needs of either the driver or vehicle.

For the engine to shutdown with Automatic Transmission, the vehicle:  Must be below 5 km/h  The selector lever in position D  Brake pedal depressed.

To restart, the driver simply releases the brake pedal and the enhanced starter motor engages the engine. When the engine has been shut down by the Stop/Start System, the needle will rest on the AUTOSTOP position. When the engine is restarted, the needle will resume position to indicate engine RPM.

Note: If the vehicle fitted with Automatic Transmission is at a standstill with a depressed brake pedal, Autostop is activated automatically. The engine will be switched off while the ignition stays on. The stop-start system will be disabled on inclines of 15% or more.

Conditions for engine shut down and restart To ensure neither the needs of the driver or vehicle are compromised the engine will not shut down in the following circumstances:

 Cooling system is too hot or too cold  Ambient temperature is less than −10°C  Battery temperature is less than 0°C or greater than 55°C  Heating & Air Conditioning system demand is high  Heating & Air Conditioning defrost has been selected  Battery charge is low  The learn procedure needs to be completed on the Battery Sensor  The switch is turned off (default is on)

Likewise the engine will automatically restart if:

 Engine hood opened  Battery charge is low  Heating & Air Conditioning demand increases  Vehicle speed increases  Brake booster vacuum has been reduced  Engine coolant temperature is greater than 125°C  Autostop time exceeded 2 min  Drivers door is opened

When the Stop/Start System has shut down the engine and the ambient temperature is below 15°C, the ECM will activate the electric engine coolant pump motor to continually circulate the engine coolant through the engine while the engine is off (1.6L only). This is to ensure the engine and passenger compartment temperature is maintained while off. Once the Stop/Start System has restarted the engine, the ECM will turn off the auxiliary coolant pump motor, thus allowing the engines internal coolant pump to circulate the engine coolant. The Stop/Start System is automatically activated each time the ignition switch is turned on.

The 6T35 & 6T45 feature upgrades implemented to enhance efficiency. Both transmissions are designed to perform optimally with Stop/Start technology by incorporating a new High Pressure fluid accumulator that supplies oil pressure to drive the transmission from an autostop/start situation. Rear Suspension  New A-bushing concept/position to get excellent ride comfort.  Optimised Watts link concept.  Delivers all of the advantages of multi-link rear suspension without any of the complexities.

The watts linkage rear axle is basically equal to the compound crank rear axle. The watts linkage is used in the rear axle of the suspension as a performance improvement. This method is intended to prevent relative sideways motion between the axle and body of the vehicle. Watt's linkage approximates a vertical straight line motion more closely, and does so while locating the centre of the axle rather than toward one side of the vehicle, as more commonly used when fitting a long Panhard rod.

It consists of two horizontal equalizer beam links of equal length mounted at each side of the chassis. In between these two links, a short centre link is connected. The centre of this centre link – the point which is constrained in a straight line motion - is mounted to the centre of the equalizer beam support. All pivoting points are free to rotate in a vertical plane. Watt's linkage can also be used to prevent axle movement in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.

The basis of passive safety in the new Astra is a rigid passenger cell mainly fabricated from high strength steel that has been designed for the least possible deformations and the largest possible survival space in crash conditions. To accommodate the impact energy in case of a crash, the front, sides and rear of the passenger compartment are surrounded by energy absorption zones that deform and protect in a controlled manner. Special deformation elements, so-called crash boxes, are securely bolted to the front and rear frame. The aluminium bumper systems (chamber profile and crash boxes) absorb the crash energy in low-speed accidents and limit the vehicle deformation to a minimum, which also keeps repair costs down. At higher front impact speeds, the deformation energy is transferred to the front sub frame, the longitudinal members carrying it and the upper rails leading into the lower A-pillars. For side protection, the stiff side body structure is designed to spread loadings. The doors have ultra-high strength steel beams that are mounted diagonally. Apart from continuing to help prevent intrusion, this layout is also more effective in engaging the press harden steel B-pillar, side sill, and the floor and of cross-members as a single network to share the load bearing task.
