PRODUCT INFORMATION

OVERVIEW

Holden confirmed it was bringing the all-new Astra to Australia in September 2015. Following the announcement, Astra has collected a variety of awards in Europe and UK, including 2016 European of the Year and the Golden Steering Wheel.

Astra has received the plaudits for its blend of premium European styling, state-of-the-art technology and exceptional driving performance, redefining what a mainstream small car is and taking the fight to luxury brands.

Whilst the Astra name is long serving in Australia, the incoming Astra is all-new. Developed from a clean-sheet design under the watchful eye of /Vauxhall’s Vice President – Design, Mark Adams, Astra exhibits the same sleek, ‘Sculptural Artistry meets German Precision’ design philosophy first introduced on the stunning Monza concept in 2013.

Focused on blending style and efficiency, Astra is built off a new vehicle architecture that facilitates up to 140kg weight reduction whilst allowing the introduction of distinct styling cues. A rear floating roof design complemented by a sports front fascia and grille that extends seamlessly into the front LED headlamp design, give Astra a strong and unmistakable road presence.

Holden engineering has been involved in the Astra program since its conception and identified many efficiencies and similarities in what Holden and Opel customers expect from, and use, their vehicles. Resultantly, Holden engineers were present for validations of the car and subsequently decided upon developing a unique Australian chassis tune to ensure Astra performs on Australian roads, as a Holden should.

Astra is equipped with a new and frugal all-aluminum, 1.4-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection turbo engine capable of producing up to 110kW of power and 240Nm of torque with a fuel consumption of as little as 5.8L/100km. Customers that enjoy a sportier drive have the option of a more powerful 1.6-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection turbo engine, boasting up to 147kW of power and an impressive 300Nm of torque (with over boost).

There’s also a big focus on safety through technology, with rear view camera as standard across the range, accompanied by Holden Eye forward facing camera^ facilitating key features including Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist and Automatic Emergency Braking to reduce, and in some cases avoid, collision incidents. Blind Spot Alert completes the list.

The all-new Astra will be available in a hatch body style and will be sold alongside the coupe (GTC and VXR).

Astra will go on sale in December and is sure to shake up the small car segment in Australia.

Powertrain

Making its debut in Astra, the all-aluminum, 1.4-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection turbo engine is capable of producing up to 110kW of power and 240Nm of torque (245Nm with manual) with a fuel consumption of as little as 5.8L/100km. Alternatively, customers can select the sportier 1.6-litre ECOTEC Direct Injection turbo engine, boasting up to 147kW of power and an impressive 300Nm of torque (with overboost).

Both lightweight engines build on Astra’s efficient design to deliver a refined a responsive driving experience.

Powertrain highlights include:

 Up-hill and down-hill mode in all automatics  6-speed manual and automatic transmissions available on both engine variants  Stop/start technology available on R auto and RS/RS-V manual and auto  Performance Mode Lift Foot feature present to adapt vehicle to driving style for improved performance

CHASSIS

Astra is characterised by an all-new lightweight architecture with an ultra-high strength steel safety cage and more agile chassis for confident and predictable handling that is also fun-to-drive. Astra also has electronic power steering, lightweight aluminium suspension components and electric park brake (on RS-V models).

Following positive feedback from the previous generation Cruze, the all-new Holden Astra comes with sports mode feature that provides: o more responsive accelerator pedal o more direct/sporting steering feel o more sporting shift map (including Performance Mode Lift Foot)

Chassis highlights include:  Watts Link rear suspension  European suspension tune developed in Russelsheim Holden Steering tune developed at Lang Lang proving ground  Torque vectoring by brake to improve agility and provide more direct steering

 Electronic Stability Control incorporating: ABS, TCS, HSA and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution – co-developed by Holden engineers at Lang Lang and in Idiada, Spain

Electric Power Steering Astra’s EPS system was tuned by Holden engineers at Lang Lang. The speed sensitive steering to enable low speed agility and high speed stability, while the on centre steering ratio is increased for crisper steering response.

SAFETY – ACTIVE AND PASSIVE

Safety has always been Holden’s first priority and Astra is no exception. Astra’s world class safety credentials focus on increased passenger safety using a variety of active and passive features.

The Holden Astra boasts rear view camera and rear parking sensors across the range.

Safety Feature Highlights  Six airbags (driver and front passenger, curtain, side impact)  2 x ISOFIX Child seat attachment points  Ratchet rear outboard seatbelts  Rear park and assist and rear view camera  Front park assist *  Side Blind Zone Alert *  Advanced park Assist *  Holden Eye forward facing camera that facilitates ^ o Auto Emergency Braking o Lane Keep Assist (and Lane Departure Warning) o Forward Collision Alert o Forward Distance Indicator

* RS and RS-V models ^ Standard on RS and RS-V models, optional on R as part of Driver Assist Pack Active Safety Features - explained

Forward Collision Alert (FCA) with Head-Up Warning This advanced and active safety system employs the Holden Eye forward facing camera to help drivers avoid front-end collisions.

The system looks for vehicles ahead and alerts drivers via audible and visual warnings in the windscreen and instrument display if they are approaching another vehicle too rapidly and a collision appears to be imminent.

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) Facilitated by the Holden Eye forward facing camera, AEB has the potential to prevent a crash or reduce the impact speed of a crash by warning the driver of an impending incident and, when necessary, automatically applying the brakes.

Lane Keep Assist (and Lane Departure Warning) The Holden Eye forward facing camera mounted on the windscreen ahead of the rear view mirror helps to avoid incidents by providing lane departure warnings and, when necessary, gently nudges Astra back into the lane automatically

This practical active safety feature helps to reduce the risk of collision that arise when drivers stray over lane markings unintentionally, or depart a lane without signalling first.

The Lane Departure System is activated by a control on the steering wheel. It may be deactivated by the driver, according to preference and circumstance.

Blind Spot Alert Blind Spot Alert operates via ultrasonic sensors located on both sides of the vehicle’s rear fascia/bumper.

The system’s first purpose is to caution drivers when a vehicle enters a specified ‘blind spot’ zone in an adjacent lane. The second imperative is to alert drivers to the danger if an attempt is made to change lanes.

The system ‘looks’ for other vehicles in both rear side blind spots and alerts the driver to their presence via cautionary visual alert in outside rear view mirrors, depending on which side the object is detected.

If the driver indicates to move into that blind zone, the visual alert in the left or right side external mirror will flash.

Advanced Park Assist Standard on Astra RS and RS-V, Advanced Park Assist uses a combination of sensors integrated into front and rear fascias that sequentially send out ultrasonic waves when the vehicle is driven at low speeds. Once the vehicle passes a space large enough to allow a park, an audible alert will sound, encouraging the driver to select reverse and park. Astra is in control of the steering, while the driver retains control of vehicle movement (forward or backward).
