Dear Parents,

We have been working hard since we have returned from holiday break. Please remember to continue to help us with reading daily and working on math facts. Our data for midyear did not look as great as we would like it to be. The teachers are working hard with students in small groups to reach each student and help them grow. Help us by having students read every night and learn math facts. It is a village. Thanks to all the families who came out to learn about IREAD 3 and ISTEP+ testing. In light of the tragic happenings in Lawrence Township this week, please take a few minutes to review our safety procedures for students arriving/leaving school each day. Remember that students arriving by bus are never considered “tardy”, regardless of the time the bus arrives.

Students arriving by car must pull into the car pool lane through the gate off of Michigan Road. At no time should anyone attempt to pass a car while in that lane, and students should ONLY exit the car from the passenger side, closest to the school. IF THE GATE IS CLOSED, the driver must proceed to the main parking lot; PARK in a valid space; and WALK with the student/s all the way into the building.

For everyone’s safety, NEVER walk between buses, and students may never walk through the parking lot unaccompanied by an adult. The space along the curb in the main parking lot is for the use of buses only. It may take a moment or two longer to follow the procedures, but our children’s safety is paramount. Practice Math Fact Every Day for Success in Math By Susan Cosand, Crooked Creek Math Specialist [email protected]

Tips for Learning Math Facts

A routine for daily practice sessions should be in place • Learning math facts is just one part of a math program therefore efficient use of limited time is critical. • A standard daily routine is necessary in order to accomplish this goal. A routine for corrective feedback during practice should be in place • Whenever students hesitate or give an incorrect answer, a corrective procedure should give them the answer, ensure they know it and provide them with a delayed test. It is very important that the delayed test occur before the student has a chance to forget the correct response. Practice sessions should be short • Students cannot maintain focus on drill for more than 2-4 minutes at a time. Practice sessions may occur more than one time during the day, but should remain short.

Got Literacy? By Anne Spaniol, Crooked Creek Literacy Specialist [email protected]

Great writing tips from Reading Rockets!

• Create a writing toolbox. Fill a box with drawing and writing materials. Find opportunities for your child to write, such as the shopping list, thank you notes, or birthday cards

• Use a writing checklist. Have your child create a writing checklist with reminders such as, “Do all of my sentences start with a capital? Yes/No.”

• Write, write, write! Ask your child to help you write out the grocery list, a thank you note to Grandma, or to keep a journal of special things that happen at home. When writing, encourage your child to use the letter and sound patterns he or she is learning at school.

• First drafts are rough. Encourage your child when writing. Remind him or her that writing involves several steps. No one does it perfectly the first time. GREAT NORTH RUN MARCH 12, 2016

2. Auditions will be closed. No spectators will be allowed in the audition area.

3. All acts need to submit a Talent Show Audition Form by Friday, February 12th. Forms must be filled out completely and accurately. The performance you present at the auditions must be exactly as it is portrayed on the audition form. No late or incomplete forms will be accepted.

4. Acts may perform one number only, and will be limited to a maximum of 4 minutes in length.

5. Your audition should be a smooth, complete performance of the act you wish to have considered for the show, including costumes. It is important that your act is well prepared for the audition.

6. You will need to have all the equipment, instruments, and props that you plan to use in your performance at the audition. We can provide a minimal amount of equipment, including a CD player, microphone with stand, piano, and music stand, if it is requested on your form. No cassette tapes can be used.

7. Auditions will be judged based on the following criteria: Delivery, Stage Presence, Audience Appeal, and Talent. Selection of acts for the show will be based on auditions and our goal of showcasing a variety of performances. Some acts will not be selected for the final performance.

8. Students wishing to use recorded accompaniments for vocal numbers must provide a high quality, clearly recorded CD of the accompaniment to be used at the audition, rehearsals and the performance. The CD must be labeled with your name, the title of the song, and track number. The CD will be collected at the audition and

returned to you after the posting of the acts selected for the performance (if you are not selected) or after the performance (if you are selected). Be sure to have a separate recording for your own practice.

4. Alteration of another artist’s lyrics to eliminate objectionable material is an infringement of copyright law, and therefore is not allowed.
