Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract This thesis compares Umbria before and after the Roman conquest in order to assess the impact of the imposition of Roman control over this area of central Italy. There are four sections specifically on Umbria and two more general chapters of introduction and conclusion. The introductory chapter examines the most important issues for the history of the Italian regions in this period and the extent to which they are relevant to Umbria, given the type of evidence that survives. The chapter focuses on the concept of state formation, and the information about it provided by evidence for urbanisation, coinage, and the creation of treaties. The second chapter looks at the archaeological and other available evidence for the history of Umbria before the Roman conquest, and maps the beginnings of the formation of the state through the growth in social complexity, urbanisation and the emergence of cult places.

Nel complesso è caratterizzato da una grande eterogeneità ambientale che consente l'attec- chimento di molte specie vegetali. Nel presente lavoro è riportato l’elenco floristico di tutte le Orchidacee comprendenti 88 taxa e 21 ibridi. A sua volta l'analisi corologica evidenzia la prevalenza degli elementi mediterranei seguita da quelli eurasiatici. Parole chiave: Chieti, Orchidaceae, check-list provinciale, elementi floristici. Abstract – The province of Chieti (Abruzzo Region) measuring 2,592 square kilometers and from north to south occupies the area between the valleys of the rivers Trigno and Pescara while from the south-west to north-west the watershed of several mountain ranges separating it from other provinces. In the complex it is characterized by a great diversity envi- ronment that allows the engraftment of many plant species. In this paper it contains a list of all the Orchids flora including 88 taxa and 21 hybrids. In turn chorological analysis highlights the prevalence of Mediterranean elements followed by those Eurasian. Chapel Hill 2012 Approved by: Richard Talbert Nathan Rosenstein Daniel Gargola Fred Naiden Wayne Lee ABSTRACT PATRICK ALAN KENT: The Roman Army’s Emergence from its Italian Origins (Under the direction of Prof. Richard Talbert) Roman armies in the 4 th century and earlier resembled other Italian armies of the day. By using what limited sources are available concerning early Italian warfare, it is possible to reinterpret the history of the Republic through the changing relationship of the Romans and their Italian allies. An important aspect of early Italian warfare was military cooperation, facilitated by overlapping bonds of formal and informal relationships between communities and individuals. However, there was little in the way of organized allied contingents. Over the 3 rd century and culminating in the Second Punic War, the Romans organized their Italian allies into large conglomerate units that were placed under Roman officers. At the same time, the Romans generally took more direct control of the military resources of their allies as idea of military obligation developed. The integration and subordination of the Italians under increasing Roman domination fundamentally altered their relationships. In the 2 nd century the result was a growing feeling of discontent among the Italians with their position.

    doi: 10.2143/AWE.13.0.3038731 AWE 13 (2014) 63-79 ITALO-HELLENISTIC SANCTUARIES OF PENTRIAN SAMNIUM: QUESTIONS OF ACCESSIBILITY RACHEL VAN DUSEN Abstract This article addresses the region of Pentrian Samnium, located in the Central Apennines of Italy. The traditional view regarding ancient Samnium presents the region as a backwater which was economically marginalised and isolated. This article examines Pentrian religious architecture from the 3rd to the 1st century BC in order to present an alternative reading of the evidence towards a more favourable view of the region with respect to its socio- economic conditions and openness to ideas and developments in Italy. The early 3rd century BC marks a time of great transformation in Italy. Roman imperialism was sweeping through the entire peninsula, large stretches of territory were being seized and Roman power was being solidified via colonies, military camps and unbalanced alliances in many of the regions in both the hinterland and along the coast. Yet, in the midst of these changes one region of Italy remained almost completely intact and autonomous – Pentrian Samnium.1 However, one look at the political map of Italy during this period suggests that while on the inside Pentrian territory, located high in the Central Apennines, remained virtually untouched by Roman encroachment, on the outside it had become entirely surrounded by Roman colonies and polities unquestionably loyal to Rome. Pentrian Samnium was the largest and most long-lived of all the Samnite regions. From the early 3rd century BC onwards, it can be argued that the Pentri made up the only Samnite tribe to have remained truly ‘Samnite’ in its culture and identity.

It seeks to construct a narrative of displacement where the key players include human as well as non-human agents—namely, the environment into which people move, and the socio-political and environmental context of displacement. Our case-study from ancient Italy involves potentially marginalized people who moved into agriculturally challenging lands in Daunia (one of the most drought-prone areas of the Mediterranean) during the Roman conquest (late fourth-early second centuries BCE). We discuss how the interplay between socio-political and environmental forces may have shaped the agency of subaltern social groups on the move, and the outcomes of this process.     POLYBIUS AND LIVY ON THE ALLIES IN THE ROMAN ARMY Paul Erdkamp* From the fourth or third century until the beginning of the rst century bc, Rome’s armies were also the armies of her allies. The socii and nomen Latinum raised at least half of the soldiers that fought wars for Rome. The Italic allies were clearly distinguished from the non-Italic troops, such as Cretan archers or Numidian horsemen, by the fact that they were governed by the formula togatorum. This can be concluded from their ‘de nition’ in the lex agraria from 111 bc: socii nominisve Latini quibus ex formula togatorum milites in terra Italia imperare solent. The formula togatorum is seen as a de ning element, distinguishing the Latin and Italic peoples from Rome’s overseas allies. Although in the second century bc a con- sciousness of Italy as a political and cultural unity gradually emerged, it was still referred to as a military alliance of Roman citizens and allies at the end of that century.1 The beginnings of this system remain in the dark, due to the inadequacies of our sources. The foedus Cassianum between Rome and the Latin League (traditionally dated to 493 bc) supposedly established a federal army under Roman command, but next to nothing is known about its functioning. The participation of the allied peoples was based on the treaties between their communities and Rome. Yet that victory is bound up with Hannibal's failure in Italy, even though he brought Rome to its knees in the early stages of the war. Previous explanations for the failure of Hannibal's strategy have tended to stress either the hopelessness of this strategy, because of the loyalty of Rome's Italian allies and their willingness to be integrated into the Roman system, or the success of Rome's counter-strategy of attrition, aimed at limiting allied revolts while wearing down Hannibal's forces. Previous scholarship, however, neglects an important dimension of the question of the failure of Hannibal’s strategy; that is, Hannibal’s failure as a diplomat to win over large numbers of Rome’s Italian allies and thus overcome Rome’s long-term strategic advantages. This dissertation looks at the Second Punic War from the perspective of the Italian states in order to explain why Hannibal did not gain more Italian allies. The dissertation is divided into four regional case studies and brings to bear literary, archaeological, numismatic, epigraphic, and topographic evidence.
