The District is bounded by Tirunelveli District on the North and the east. • The South Eastern boundary is flanked by Gulf of Mannar. On the South and the South West, the boundaries are the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. On the West and North West it is bound by Kerala State. • The District lies between 8o 03' and 8o 35' N Latitude, 77o 15' and 77o 36' E Longitude and has an areal extent of 1684 sq.km. • There are 9 Blocks, 95 Villages and 1384 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage: • The major river in the district is Kuzhithuraiar. • This river has got two major distributaries namely Kodayar and Paralayar. There are many tributaries for Kodayar River and among them are Chittar I and Chittar II rivers. • The origin of Kodayar River is Western Ghats and the river confluences with Arabian Sea near Thengaipattanam, at a distance of about 56 Km. west of Cape Comorian, the southernmost tip of India. • Valliar, another small river and its tributary Thoovalar, originates from Velimalai Hills, and confluences with Arabian Sea near Manavalakurichi. Pazhayar is another small river draining the district. Economic growth has been sluggish with protracted unemployment, fiscal uncertainty and subdued business and consumer sentiments. Growth in high income countries is projected to be weak as they struggle to repair damaged financial sectors and badly stretched financial sheets. 1.2 Global economic growth started to decelerate on a broad front in mid-2011 and this trend is expected to stretch well into 2012 and 2013. The United Nations base line forecast for the growth of world gross product (WGP) is 2.6% for 2012 and 3.2% for 2013, which is below the pre-crisis pace of global growth. 1.3 It is expected that the US economy will grow at about 2% with modest growth in exports. Persistent high unemployment and low wage growth have been holding back aggregate demand and together with the prospects of prolonged depressed housing prices, this has heightened risks of a new wave of home foreclosures in the United States. However, employment data for December 2011 and January 2012 have been encouraging with signs of revival in business confidence. On the other hand, as far as the Euro Zone is concerned, high deficit and debt continue to prevail. The Euro Zone experienced a period of declining output, high unemployment and subdued private consumption. However, the business climate indicator increased for the first time in ten months and inflation rate fell from 3% to 2.8 % in December. In order to boost investment, the European Central Bank flooded banks with low cost loans and there was improvement in demand.

This has always been a symbol of culture. The native people of any place are making and having various meals. These local foods as a part of the culture attract various tourists. In Bihar, tourists mainly come to visit Bodh Gaya, Patna City or to celebrate local festival – Chhath or to enjoy various circuits. Therefore, the tourism industry need to diversify their products and include more cultural tourism based components of which food is a key contender. In Bihar, the promotion of food as a component of its destination attractiveness is in its infancy at both the international and domestic level. The context of this contribution is to highlight such developments using the rationale that in order to maintain and enhance local economic and social vitality, creating back linkages between tourism and food production sectors can add value to the economy. This paper using a case study approach and researcher experience will attempt to address the strengths and opportunities of food promotion in Indian state of Bihar.
