Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 1. Mary Almond Physicist and Computer Scientist
Mary Almond did her PhD at Jodrell Bank, from 1949 to 1952, using radar to study the speed of meteors. She was part of the team that proved meteor showers originate from within the solar system. She later became one of the first computer science lecturers in the UK. Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 2. Jocelyn Bell Burnell Astrophysicist
As a school pupil Jocelyn Bell Burnell wrote to Bernard Lovell to ask how she could become a radio astronomer. In 1964, whilst studying Physics in Glasgow, she did a summer school at Jodrell Bank. She went on to discover pulsars whilst doing her PhD at the University of Cambridge. Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 3. Joyce Lovell Wife of Sir Bernard Lovell, founder of Jodrell Bank
Joyce Lovell was more than just a supportive wife. Practical, sociable and fiercely intelligent she was instrumental in shaping the cultural life of Jodrell Bank. She provided the emotional support and intellectual challenge that sustained Bernard Lovell throughout his career. Jodrell Bank would not be what it is today without her influence. Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 4 . Althea Wilkinson Astrophysicist
Althea has travelled to Africa as part of a project called Development in Africa with Radio Astronomy. This project trains people in south African countries who will be involved in the Square Kilometra Array (SKA) in radio astronomy. Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 5. Christine Jordan Software Engineer
Christine is responsible for programming the computers which drive the Lovell telescope and collect the data from it. Before working at Jodrell Bank she studied X-Ray crystallography. Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 6. Lina Levin Preston Astrophysicist
Lina studies neutron stars with very strong magnetic fields called magnetars. These stars emit X-rays and Gamma rays. Other people at Jodrell Bank also study neutron stars with strong magnetic fields which emit radio waves. These are called pulsars. Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 7. Anna Bonaldi Astrophysicist
While working at Jodrell Bank Anna studied the Cosmic Microwave Background (created by the Big Bang) with the Planck space telescope. She now works for the SKA organisation. Girls Night Reach for the stars! Out! 8. Philippa Browning Astrophysicist
Philippa’s research involves mathematical modelling and computer simulation of plasma – the fourth state of matter – and its interactions with magnetic fields, particularly in the Sun’s corona (outer atmosphere), and the origin of solar flares – the most powerful explosions in the solar system.
