Res. 251] win be presented to his widow, Leonore Gershwin, and to provide for the production of bronze duplicates of such medals for sale to the public. Whereas George and Ira Gershwin, individually and jointly, created music which is undeniably American and which is internationally admired; Whereas George Gershwin composed works acclaimed both as classi cal music and as popular music, including "Rhapsody in Blue", "An American in Paris", "Concerto in F", and "Three Preludes for Piano"; Whereas Ira Gershwin won a Pulitzer Prize for the lyrics for "Of Thee I Sing", the first lyricist ever to receive such prize; Whereas Ira Gershwin composed the lyrics for major Broadway productions, including "A Star is Born", "Lady in the Dark", "The Barkleys of Broadway", and for hit songs, including "I Can't Get Started", "Long Ago and Far Away", and "The Man That Got Away"; Whereas George and Ira Gershwin collaborated to compose the music and lyrics for major Broadway productions, including "Lady Be Good", "Of Thee I Sing", "Strike Up the Band", "Oh Kay!", and "Funny Face"; Whereas George and Ira Gershwin collaborated to produce the opera "Porgy and Bess" and the 50th anniversary of its first perform ance will occur during 1985; Whereas George and Ira Gershwin collaborated to compose -

Summary: Composer George Gershwin (1898-1937) and his lyricist brother Ira (1896-1983) wrote some of the most significant American popular songs of the first half of the twentieth century. Working with novelist and poet DuBose Heyward, they created the great American opera Porgy and Bess. Additionally, George Gershwin composed several singularly American concert works, including An American in Paris and Rhapsody In Blue, and both brothers produced many distinguished songs working with other collaborators. The George and Ira Gershwin Collection contains music manuscripts, handwritten and typewritten lyric sheets, printed music, correspondence, photographs, programs and publicity materials, legal and financial documents, and thirty-one scrapbooks, which present nearly a complete record of the Gershwins' lives and work as they were chronicled in the contemporary press. Discontented with the condition of the musical world and the world at large, RALPH SHAPEY removed his works from public performance in 1969. He rescinded this decision seven years later, and since then there has been a renewal of interest in his works. As a conductor, Shapey has appeared as a guest with several American and European symphony orchestras. Composer JUDITH SHATIN currently serves on the music faculty at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. She has written several com missioned works for vocal, instrumental, and electronic media and has four NEA Composer Fellowships to her credit. Her compositions have been performed by the Da Capo Chamber Players, the Contemporary Music Forum, and the symphony orchestras of Houston and Richmond, Virginia. Along with many of his artistic European contemporaries, KURT" WEILL fled Germany during the rise of the Nazi regime. Having achieved success with stage music in Germany, Weill was quickly attracted to Broadway. -

After the Rhapsody: George Gershwin in the Spring of 1924 SUSAN NEIMOYER The year 1924 was a banner period in the early career of the young George Gershwin. The astonishingly successful pre- miere of the Rhapsody in Blue with Paul Whiteman’s orchestra on 12 February 1924, in some ways made it the year of the Rhapsody. Thanks to the business acumen that prompted Whiteman to capitalize on a hit when he had one, many additional performances of the Rhapsody were given throughout the year, including a tour, and a commercial recording 91 was released that summer. As a result, Gershwin would forever be known as the composer of the Rhapsody in Blue. The year 1924 also proved to be one of the most demanding years of Gershwin’s career in terms of compositional output (table 1). In addi- tion to the Rhapsody Gershwin wrote the music for three musicals that year: The George White Scandals of 1924 (June 1924, 192 performances), Primrose (London, September 1924, 255 performances), and Lady, Be Good! (December 1924, 330 performances). Sweet Little Devil, a less suc- cessful show whose music had been completed in late 1923, opened in late January 1924 (120 performances) while Gershwin was writing the Rhapsody. Given the frantic pace these obligations suggest, it is not sur- prising to note that after 1925 Gershwin never again wrote music for more than two stage productions in a single year. In the known manuscripts of the music Gershwin created during this busiest of years, one source stands out as a particular curiosity.
