A retail clerk with Safeway, Steve loves barbershop music and says the highlight of his career was singing with the Career Opera Singers in Bear Valley. While singing with the SJSU Choraliers, he toured Australia in 1986 and has his sights set on a professional singing career. Hope you make it, Steve. VIRGINIA MITCHELL - Kate Although Virginia is also a native Califomian and has performed with several theatrical groups in the Bay Area, this is her first performance with WVLO. Her credits include two productions as Anita in 'West Side Story" (which she describes as a 1antastic experience'), "Any- thing Goes", "Oklahoma", "Damn Yankees" and "HMS Pinafore" for SJCMT, "Camelot", "Two Gentlemen of Verona", "How To Succeed" and "Gypsy" for SCP, and "Man For All Seasons" for Foothill College. She has also rostumed for SJCMT and for Theater West. Her most recent production was in 1981 in Montalvo Players production of "Mash". Virginia says, "Mer spending some time away from theater, developing a ''Yuppie" technical career in Silicon Valley, it's great to be back with my 1irst love', the theater." And we are pleased that she chose this great Gershwin show for her 'comeback'!! Don't stay away so long. ROBERT P. BERGMAN - Zoli Bob appears in his sixth production with WVLO, a~hough there has been a 5-year span between this and "Man of La Mancha" when he played the role of Sancho Panza. Other productions were 'Oklahoma", "Pajama Game", ''Good News" and "Perfectly Frank". Since he last appeared with us in 1983 Bob has performed with G&S, the Saratoga Chamber Theater (Foothill Festival), and The lamp- lighters in SF. His credits include productions with CAST, SCP, SJMT, and the Foothill College Summer Theater. A native of Ubya, Bob has lived in the Santa Clara Valley since 1968, and is a graduate of Santa Clara University Law School. He is married to Cara-Lynn and is a practicing attorney emphasizing estate planning, real estate, corporate and personal injury law and just happens to have plenty of his business cards handy. Welcome back, Bob! TERI KENT - Molly Another new face and talent on our stage, Teri has an impressive list of credits which includes an appearance on TV with Danny Thomas Productions in "Blood Sport" with Larry Hagman and Garey Busey and performance in "Bye Bye Birdie" at the Sacramento Music Circus with Tab Hunter & Dan Truhitte. Other stage appearances have been in "Gypsy", "No No Nanette", "Pajama Game", "Music Man", "David & Lisa", and "The Play". She has studied film acting with Dennis Sakamoto, Stage One and technical theater production from Jerry Helm, in addition to many other sessions in various aspects oftheater. A meeting planner for Kent & Associates, Teri wants to work in film and television commercials. From our viewpoint, her goals certainly seem attainable. Good luck, Teri! CARA-L YNN BERGMAN - Charity This may be Cara-Lynn's debut wtth WVLO, but avid SJCMT and G&S fans will recognize her from her performances in "Cinderella", "Scrooge", "HMS Pinafore", "Oklahoma", "Music Man", "Pirates of Penzance", "Princess Ida", ''The Gondoliers", "Babes in Toyland", "Ruddigore", "Patience", ''Trial By Jury", and "Iolanthe"; an impres- sive list of credss for such a young lady. Besides these she has performed for the Lamplighters, Saratoga Chamber Theater (Foothill Festival), SCP, and Centerstage Productions. Before she met and married Bob (Zol~, she traveled extensively wtth her fami!y for World Vision Intemational throughout the US and Central America. This may be her first, but we hope not the last production wtth us. Come back soon, Cara-Lynn. BILL WILKINSON - Sam This will be Bill's sixth performace with WVLO, his most recent in last season's opener, "Anything Goes", preceeded by ''The Desert Song", "Some Enchanted Evening", "Sweet Chartty", and "Showboat". Other appearances have been local productions of "Sound of Music", "Carousel" and currently is a regular cast member in the murder mys- teries for private parties presented by "Murder By Design". His BA Degree in Eoonomics from the Universtty of Minnesota provides his backround for his current profession of registered investment advisor and financial planner. His hobbies include golf, music, reading and theater and of course, studying the stock market. Any good tips, Bill? With such a busy schedule, we are delighted he makes the time to share his talents and perform for us. JACK FLEMNG - Doc Regular theater goers will remember Jack's first appearance with us as General Birabeau in ''The Desert Song" and then his wonderful drunk, Whttney, in "Anything Goes" last year. Character roles seem to be his specialty and his most favorite was in ''Ten Commandments" in 1956. As a member of AFTRA, SAG and Equity, Jack has per- formed on TV in "Dragnef, Studio One" and several others. In other local musicals he played Mayor Shinn in "Music Man" with CAST.

Connotations Vol. 20.2-3 (2010/2011) Worcestershirewards: Wodehouse and the Baroque*1 LAWRENCE DUGAN I should define as baroque that style which deli- berately exhausts (or tries to exhaust) all its pos- sibilities and which borders on its own parody. (Jorge Luis Borges, The Universal History of Infamy 11) Unfortunately, however, if there was one thing circumstances weren’t, it was different from what they were, and there was no suspicion of a song on the lips. The more I thought of what lay before me at these bally Towers, the bowed- downer did the heart become. (P. G. Wodehouse, The Code of the Woosters 31) A good way to understand the achievement of P. G. Wodehouse is to look closely at the style in which he wrote his Jeeves and Wooster novels, which began in the 1920s, and to realise how different it is from that used in the dozens of other books he wrote, some of them as much admired as the famous master-and-servant stories. Indeed, those other novels and stories, including the Psmith books of the 1910s and the later Blandings Castle series, are useful in showing just how distinct a style it is. It is a unique, vernacular, contorted, slangy idiom which I have labeled baroque because it is in such sharp con- trast to the almost bland classical sentences of the other Wodehouse books. The Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary describes the ba- roque style as “marked generally by use of complex forms, bold or- *For debates inspired by this article, please check the Connotations website at <http://www.connotations.de/debdugan02023.htm>.
