The evolving weaponry (�sts, knife, gun, bomb), levels of violence (threat, maiming, murder, multiple murders, mass extermination), the types of crime (gold smuggling, drugs, real estate extortion, kidnapping, video piracy), the processes of gang formation (community, remuneration)—all these provide a fascinating view of a society in the throes of evolution. S. Hussain Zaidi’s Dongri To Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Ma�a attempts such a survey, describing the underworld from a time of relative innocence when bully gangs with knives roamed the grimy streets of India’s commercial capital, to our current brand of globalised and corporatised terror. Woven into this journey that spans the post-independence era is a biography of the most notorious �gure it has spawned—Dawood Ibrahim. An enterprising journalist whose earlier book on the 1993 Mumbai bombings was made into the searing Black Friday by �lmmaker Anurag Kashyap, Zaidi has an eye for the cinematic. In Dongri to Dubai, he tells of the symbolically sinister value of a walking stick owned by the Pathan strongman Karim Lala, for instance. And of the colourful hitman Manya Surve, who drew inspiration from the novels of James Hadley Chase and carried bombs “the way people carry chikoos in their plastic bags”. Also, the pithy one-liner from a gangland member: “Our business is the business of fear”. There is a wealth of data here and some interesting revelations. One such concerns the 1992 shootout at the government-run JJ Hospital in central Mumbai. One of the most horri�c episodes in the inter-gang warfare of the time, the event had been exceptionally chilling for the brazen disregard with which it had breached the invisible walls that had traditionally separated criminal from civilian territory. Dawood Ibrahim, whose story appears in relief, as be�ts his dominant stature, emerges as a paradox: a street goon who journeyed from a Mumbai ghetto to a place on the US list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists and Forbes magazine’s chart of the world’s �fty most powerful individuals, he is also a mere pawn in the game of brinkmanship between India and Pakistan—liable to be shuttled from country to country, unable to satisfy his yearning to return home. Unfortunately, the book, ambitious in scope, unfolds as a breathless recitation of events, sans any attempt to �nd patterns or situate the underworld in a social and ethical context. There is a great deal of vagueness, notably, for instance, about the �nancial scale of Ibrahim’s operations, which adds to the tone of mythi�cation. Despite the handicaps of style and analysis, this book is a useful archive on the Mumbai ma�a. As an anecdotal account, it is an enjoyable read. It would therefore be a ‘contempt of court’ as it would ‘interfere with the course of justice’ and would also defame the accused pronouncing them guilty before a public audience before the court has actually done so.

NATIONAL SCHOOL OF BANKING : 1 : PTR-0320 POINTS TO REMEMBER CONSTITUTION - Supreme Court - The Supreme Court on 13th November 2019, upheld the disqualification of 17 dissident Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) legislators by then Karnataka Assembly Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar under the Tenth Schedule (anti-defection law) but held that their ouster is no bar from contesting repolls. Neither under the Constitution nor under the statutory scheme it is contemplated that disqualification under the Tenth Schedule would operate as a bar for contesting re-elections, a Bench led by Justice N.V. Ramana said in a judgment. The court said Section 36 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 does not contemplate such disqualification. On the provisions introduced in the 91st Constitutional Amendment, it said they were brought in specifically to ensure that a legislator disqualified for defection was not appointed as a government Minister or to any remunerative post from the date of his disqualification either till the expiry of his term of office or till he was re-elected to the legislature, “whichever is earlier”. In the light of the existing constitutional mandate, the Speaker is not empowered to disqualify any member till the end of the term. However, a member disqualified under the Tenth Schedule shall be subjected to sanctions provided under Articles 75(1B), 164(1B) and 361B of the Constitution, which provides for a bar from being appointed as a Minister or from holding any remunerative political post from the date of disqualification till the date on which the term of his office would expire or if he is re-elected to the legislature, whichever is earlier, the court held.

His bestselling book, „Black Friday‟, based on the 1993 serial bomb blasts was filmed by the very talented Anurag Kashyap in the year, 2004. His intense research on the Mumbai Mafia has been monumental in the production of all his Bestsellers and various movies. In this paper we will take into consideration his book, “Mafia Queens of Mumbai”, which depicts the lives of the very gutsy and lethal women mafia of Mumbai, their psychological complexities and the crisis, which pushed them beyond the limitations of human morality. Though he writes, not to pedestalize this pernicious race, yet we cannot ignore the feminist touch and sympathetic treatment to these women, which we can also term as the writer‟s folly.

Girls Deegree College Chhibramau, Kannauj-209721, (Affiliated to CSJM University, Kanpur), Uttar Pradesh, India Abstract Cinema has emerged as an influential medium of information, entertainment, news, education and historical memory in the beginning of early twentieth century. The Cinema is not only a powerful means of communication but also a mirror of society, a cultural agent of change and subject-matter and a source of history. In the over 450 years of his demise, Shakespeare has inspired several generations of filmmakers across the world with ideas through his plays that have the universality to transcend the confines of the written word, albeit in an English that is no longer in vogue, with characters that belong to a different era and a different cultures.. One reason for the large number of celluloid versions of Shakespeare may have sprung from the fact that Indian cinema is importing the content from abroad. The cinematic adaptation of the plays of William Shakespeare in India has been an outstanding and ground-breaking venture. When Shakespeare's plays are adapted on Indian Bollywood screen, it sets ablaze, and transfers the audience to a cinematic romance. Indian adaptation of both Shakespearean tragedy and comedy can be comprehended as a blending of West and East and a confluence of the Avon and The Ganga universalizing the human values. Shakespearean plays are indianized on the screen of Bollywood and are represented in Indian context dealing with the contemporary issue The present research paper will analyze the Bollywood adaptations of some Shakespeare dark tragedies like Macbeth, Othello, and Hamlet Into the movies like Maqbool, Omkara and Haider directed by Vishal Bharadwaj respectively and try to probe what imitation and innovation are made in them by comparing the adapted movies and the literary sources.

His first book ‘Black Friday’ went to become a bestseller of its time and then adapted into a movie of the same name.The book traces the evolution of the Mumbai mafia from a group of thugs and smugglers to the present day mafia dons of organised crime. It traces the journey of Dawood Ibrahim from the by-lanes of Dongri where he first cut his teeth in crime, to Dubai, where he eventually established his empire. The book was adapted into the film Shootout at Wadala by Sanjay Gupta. Zaidi was the only one to get an interview with Dawood Ibrahim after he left the Indian shores forever. It is only befitting that Zaidi after two decades of work gives the city and the country a brief glimpse into that world.
