Kahlil Gibran a Tear and a Smile (1950)
“perplexity is the beginning of knowledge…” Kahlil Gibran A Tear and A Smile (1950) STYLIN’! SAMBA JOY VERSUS STRUCTURAL PRECISION THE SOCCER CASE STUDIES OF BRAZIL AND GERMANY Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan P. Milby, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2006 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Melvin Adelman, Adviser Professor William J. Morgan Professor Sarah Fields _______________________________ Adviser College of Education Graduate Program Copyright by Susan P. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated. -

As usual, they have put forward nominees to receive the annual awards presented at the UEFA Gala, held as a curtain-raiser to the new club competition season at the end of August to coincide with the draws for the opening stages of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup. They have named six candidates for each of the awards presented to the Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfielder, Best Attacker, Most Valuable Player and Best Coach, based on their performances during the 2001/02 European campaign. This is not restricted to the UEFA Champions League – which explains the inclusion of Bert van Marwijk, head coach of the Feyenoord side which carried off the UEFA Cup and will be in Monaco to contest the UEFA Super Cup with Real Madrid CF. -

Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ
Reflections on the World Cup JAIME RAMIREZ In 2018 the World Cup will be held in Russia and the buzz around the world is one of ecstasy, particularly for young countries that qualified for the first time, like Iceland and Panama. With World Cup fixtures, the Netherlands and the United States, failing to qualify for the final stage, there is talk of major change in both federations. The United States, in particular, had been mak- ing important strides in recent Cups, making it to the second round routinely. This setback will undoubtedly make U.S. Soccer come to terms with the real- ity that major changes need to be made in order for the team to return to the world stage, especially as the U.S. has submitted a joint bid (with Mexico and Canada) to host the 2026 World Cup. Recently, I heard a network announcer ask his colleagues, “Do you remem- ber the first World Cup that you saw?” It was interesting to hear recollections on what is generally recognized as the greatest sporting event on earth. Here are my own earliest recollections, and how they have shaped my life. The first World Cup that I watched was the 1966 event hosted by England (the last one televised in black and white). The Cup introduced me to “El Rey” Pele (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) from Brazil, the “Black Panther of Mo- zambique,” Eusebio from Portugal, and the Charlton brothers, Jackie and Bob- by, from the eventual winner England. I remember sitting on the living room floor of our house in Mexicali and hearing the announcer continually mention the name “Charlton.” As days went by and England advanced, it dawned on me that there were two Charltons, Bobby and Jackie—gradually, I was able to distinguish between the brothers. -
