It combines classics and successful teaching texts with innovative recent works. To reflect the rich diversity of the school population in NSW a range of difficulty, themes and cultural orientations is reflected through the lists. This diversity is also evident in the broad scope of the Fiction, Film and Other Texts list. It includes fiction as well as nonfiction, poetry, drama, film, media and multimedia texts. I would like to acknowledge the support given to the development of the Fiction, Film and Other Texts list by Dr Wayne Sawyer, Chair of the NSW Board of Studies’ English Board Curriculum Committee. (Professor) Gordon Stanley President Board of Studies 4 Fiction, Film and Other Texts General Preface Background The texts listed here are suitable for study in Years 7 to 10. The texts listed are not prescribed for study. A predecessor of this publication was Works and Plays (Board of Studies, 1992), a collection of recommended quality texts for Years 9 and 10. The present recommended text list owes much to Works and Plays in content, format and function while providing a broader support document for the new English Years 7–10 Syllabus (2002). Texts in this document are listed for Stages 4 and 5 in the following categories: • fiction • poetry • film • nonfiction • drama • media and multimedia (including websites and CD-ROMs). The syllabus provides that students must study examples of spoken, print and visual texts with the further requirement that the selection of texts must give students experience of: • a widely-defined Australian literature and other Australian texts, including those which give insight into Aboriginal experiences and multicultural experiences in Australia • literature from other countries and times • cultural heritages, popular cultures and youth cultures • picture books • Shakespearean drama in Stage 5 • everyday and workplace texts • a range of social, gender and cultural perspectives.     Relationships to the Bush in Nan Chauncy’s Early Novels for Children SUSAN SHERIDAN AND EMMA MAGUIRE Flinders University The 1950s marked an unprecedented development in Australian children’s literature, with the emergence of many new writers—mainly women, like Nan Chauncy, Joan Phipson, Patricia Wrightson, Eleanor Spence and Mavis Thorpe Clark, as well as Colin Thiele and Ivan Southall. Bush and rural settings were strong favourites in their novels, which often took the form of a generic mix of adventure story and the bildungsroman novel of individual development. The bush provided child characters with unique challenges, which would foster independence and strength of character. While some of these writers drew on the earlier pastoral tradition of the Billabong books,1 others characterised human relationships to the land in terms of nature conservation. In the early novels of Chauncy and Wrightson, the children’s relationship to the bush is one of attachment and respect for the environment and its plants and creatures. Indeed these novelists, in depicting human relationships to the land, employ something approaching the strong Indigenous sense of ‘country’: of belonging to, and responsibility for, a particular environment. Later, both Wrightson and Chauncy turned their attention to Aboriginal presence, and the meanings which Aboriginal culture—and the bloody history of colonial race relations— gives to the land. In their earliest novels, what is strikingly original is the way both writers use bush settings to raise questions about conservation of the natural environment, questions which were about to become highly political. In Australia, the nature conservation movement had begun in the late nineteenth century, and resulted in the establishment of the first national parks.

    - 1 - INTRODUCTION A Sense of Place in Twentieth-Century Australian Life Writing In recent years, at both popular and academic levels, there has been increased talk about an Australian national identity. Events at home and abroad have sparked discussion about what it means to be “Australian”, and Australia’s role in world affairs. Such debates inevitably turn to a reassessment of traditional attributes of the “Australian character”, highlighted a few years ago by the controversy over the proposed insertion of the value of “mateship” into the preamble to the Australian constitution. For all this talk about national character and values, it is often forgotten that, on a more personal level, any identification with a nation or homeland must also involve a sense of place. What makes any of us Australian? Surely at bottom this has to begin with our dwelling in, having origins in, and retaining a continuing connection to this land mass we now call Australia. But what are the hallmarks of an Australian’s sense of place? How is it formed, nurtured and sustained? Does one’s sense of place change or alter depending on what part of Australia one lives in? As Simon Schama says in the introduction to his extensive study, Landscape and Memory, “it is our shaping perception that makes the difference between raw matter and landscape”.1 So, too, our sense of place comes not merely from the physical landforms we inhabit but also from within us, our mode of viewing, which is informed by culture and history. This thesis explores the sense of place formed during childhood, as remembered by adult Australians who reconstruct their youth through various forms of life writing.

    SUBMISSION TO THE PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION RE COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS ON THE PARALLEL IMPORTATION OF BOOKS 14 January, 2009 As a peak Australian voluntary organisation whose membership represents authors, illustrators, publishers, booksellers, teachers, librarians, teacher-librarians and parents, the Children's Book Council of Australia would like to express its objection to changes to present provisions of the Copyright Act that restrict parallel importation. Australia has a vibrant book industry, including the publication of many books for children. We see these books as a major enculturating force – they help Australian children to discover and celebrate who we are and what is important to us; they tell us our own unique stories in our own language/s, asking us to critically examine ourselves and our way of life. Every year, in schools around Australia, tens of thousands of Australian children celebrate the best of Australian children's literature, culminating in the CBCA Book of the Year Awards followed by Book Week. Australian award-winning books are written by new as well as established authors. With some of these books, Australian publishers have taken a chance in their publication; a chance which may not have been taken if parallel importation restrictions had been lifted. Australian authors feature prominently in international awards and honour lists because of the high quality of their work. Seit Jahren haben Gesellschaften für Blinde Tonträger für die eigenen Bibliothe- ken produziert, um blinden oder sehbehinderten Menschen zu helfen. Hörmedien von kommerziellen Produzenten, in Australien ist ABC Enterprises der größte, sind in der Regel gekürzte Versionen von Büchern. Bolinda Audio arbeitet kommerziell, veröffent- licht aber nur ungekürzte Versionen. Louis Braille Audio und VoyalEyes sind Abteilun- gen von Organisationen für Blinde, die Tonträger auch an Bibliotheken verkaufen und sie sind auch im Handel erhältlich. Grundsätzlich gelten öffentliche Bibliotheken als Hauptzielgruppe und ihnen werden spezielle Dienstleistungen von den Verlagen selbst oder dem Bibliothekszulieferer angeboten. Die britische und amerikanische Konkurrenz ist im Kindertonträgerbereich besonders groß. Aus diesem Grund spezialisieren sich australische Hörbuchverlage auf die Produktion von Büchern australischer Autoren und/ oder über Australien. Bei Kindern sind die Autoren John Marsden, Paul Jennings und Andy Griffiths sehr beliebt. Stig Wemyss, ein ausgebildeter Schauspieler, hat zahl- reiche Bücher bei verschiedenen Verlagen erfolgreich gelesen. Musik bzw. Lieder wer- den auf Hörbüchern nur vereinzelt verwendet. Es gibt aber einige Gruppen, z.B. die Wiggles, und Entertainer, z.B. Don Spencer, die Lieder für Kinder schreiben und auf- nehmen. Da der Markt für Kindertonträger in Australien noch im Aufbau ist, lohnt es sich, die Entwicklungen weiter zu verfolgen.
