Albert Einstein Preface These notes are, almost, a verbatim reproduction of my lectures on thermal physics, to the undergraduate students of the Chennai Mathematical Institute, Chennai during August-November, 2017. Prior to this I have taught thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad from 2006-2015, ◦ the Rajeev Gandhi University for Knowledge Technology (RGUKT) (Video ◦ lectures) 2010, the School of Basic Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology ◦ Bhubaneswa during January - April 2017 and Chennai Mathematical Institute, ◦ in the years 2004 and 2005. While preparing this document, I have extensively drawn from the notes, assignment sheets, tutorial papers, and question papers generated and distributed to the students of these courses. Each chapter can be taught in some three to five hours. The material in the entire document can be covered comfortably in one semester - forty to forty five hours or so, including one problem - solving session every other week. A major problem of teaching thermal physics is not about what to teach; it is about what not to teach. Thermal Physics encompasses, the entire thermody- namics, and a good part of statistical mechanics. While making this statement, I am fully aware that strictly thermodynamics does not need any model or any assumptions about atoms and molecules - that make up matter. Thermodynamics does not require any help from statistical mechanics; nor does it require help from any other disciplines. Thermodynamics is a stand-alone subject, self-contained with a coherent struc- ture and inner consistency and with concepts that are well defined and well-knit. One can teach traditional thermodynamics following, for example the book of Weinreich1 or Callen2 without involving statistical mechanics, stochastic-cum- kinetic heat or atomic matter. But then in such an approach, a beginner shall most likely, face huge difficulties. Defining internal energy in terms of adiabatic work is a bit odd, to say the least. So is describing heat as difference between adiabatic and actual work; entropy would remain enigmatic when defined in the context of converting an inexact differential to an exact one; a beginner is likely get more puzzled than wise if thermodynamic is taught this way3. 1 Weinreich, Fundamental Thermodynamics, Addison-Wesley (1968) 2 H B Callen, Thermodynamics, John wiley (1960) 3 It calls for a certain maturity, a deep knowledge, and a love for historical and traditional approach, to appreciate, and enjoy thermodynamics in its pure form. iv Thermodynamics peppered with a bit of statistical mechanics, kinetic heat and atomic matter, is a different ball-game altogether. The subject wold become know- able, and easily at that; the subject would become transparent and even a bit more interesting. I would take the attitude that the notion of internal energy becomes transparent when it is taught invoking atoms, their properties and their interactions; entropy is best described and its tendency to increase, is best understood by invoking its statistical moorings. All said and done, is isn’t that a macroscopic system chooses that value of its macroscopic property, which is overwhelmingly most probable - the one that has maximum entropy ? Hence bringing in a little bit of statistical mechanics right at the beginning of teaching thermodynamics would be very helpful. But then we should be careful to keep it to a bare minimum, lest statistical mechanics should push thermodynamics to its appendix-pages. I think I have maintained this balance in these lecture notes. I have chosen to publish what I taught as lecture notes rather than a book. A book would demand a reasonably complete discussion of various issues and call for some serious efforts toward tying-up of all loose ends. Such problems are not there for lecture notes. You simply write up what you teach, and the way you teach; nothing more; and nothing less. Leave it to the readers to complete the narrative you have initiated in the lecture notes; and they can do it by consulting other books and articles. To facilitate such an enterprise I have listed several books and articles, at the end of the first chapter. The list, I must admit, is, by no means, exhaustive. I have picked up for listing, the books I have studied and the ones that caught my fancy. A reasonably good number of worked examples, and a set of practice problems, are included in separate sections. These are drawn mostly from other books. Where ever I remember, I have cited the sources. The emphasis is on conceptual issues and on learning thermal physics by exam- ples. I have made extensive use of toy-problems for illustrating important concepts. I hope these lecture notes on Thermal Physics make one more useful addition to your bookshelf. If you find any mistakes, or find any portions that lack clarity, and if you have suggestions to improve the readability, please tell me4.     STATISTICS OF A FREE SINGLE QUANTUM PARTICLE AT A FINITE TEMPERATURE JIAN-PING PENG Department of Physics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200240, China Abstract We present a model to study the statistics of a single structureless quantum particle freely moving in a space at a finite temperature. It is shown that the quantum particle feels the temperature and can exchange energy with its environment in the form of heat transfer. The underlying mechanism is diffraction at the edge of the wave front of its matter wave. Expressions of energy and entropy of the particle are obtained for the irreversible process. Keywords: Quantum particle at a finite temperature, Thermodynamics of a single quantum particle PACS: 05.30.-d, 02.70.Rr 1 Quantum mechanics is the theoretical framework that describes phenomena on the microscopic level and is exact at zero temperature. The fundamental statistical character in quantum mechanics, due to the Heisenberg uncertainty relation, is unrelated to temperature. On the other hand, temperature is generally believed to have no microscopic meaning and can only be conceived at the macroscopic level. For instance, one can define the energy of a single quantum particle, but one can not ascribe a temperature to it. However, it is physically meaningful to place a single quantum particle in a box or let it move in a space where temperature is well-defined. This raises the well-known question: How a single quantum particle feels the temperature and what is the consequence? The question is particular important and interesting, since experimental techniques in recent years have improved to such an extent that direct measurement of electron dynamics is possible.1,2,3 It should also closely related to the question on the applicability of the thermodynamics to small systems on the nanometer scale.4 We present here a model to study the behavior of a structureless quantum particle moving freely in a space at a nonzero temperature.

Description Thermal physics involves the study of systems with lots (1023) of particles. Since only a two-body problem can be solved analytically, you can imagine we will look at these systems somewhat differently from simple systems in mechanics. Rather than try to predict individual trajectories of individual particles we will consider things on a larger scale. Probability and statistics will play an important role in thinking about what can happen. There are two general methods of dealing with such systems – a top down approach and a bottom up approach. In the top down approach (thermodynamics) one doesn’t even really consider that there are particles there, and instead thinks about things in terms of quantities like temperature heat, energy, work, entropy and enthalpy. In the bottom up approach (statistical mechanics) one considers in detail the interactions between individual particles. Building up from there yields impressive predictions of bulk properties of different materials. In this course we will cover both thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The first part of the term will emphasize the former, while the second part of the term will emphasize the latter. Both topics have important applications in many fields, including solid-state physics, fluids, geology, chemistry, biology, astrophysics, cosmology. The great thing about thermal physics is that in large part it’s about trying to deal with reality.

During his lifetime, he received many honours and distinctions for his invaluable scientific contributions, especially to experimental thermodynamics. Colleague of the celebrated chemist Louis-Joseph Gay- Lussac (1778-1850) at the École des Mines and mentor of William Thomson (1824-1907) at the École Polytechnique, he is nowadays conspicuously absent from all the textbooks and reviews (Hertz, 2004) dealing with thermodynamics. This paper is thus the opportunity to recall his major contributions to the field of experimental thermodynamics but also to the nascent field, in those days, of organic chemistry. Avid amateur of photography, he devoted more than twenty years of his life to his second passion. Having initially taken up photography in the 1840s as a potential tool for scientific research, he ultimately made many more photographs for artistic and self-expressive purposes than scientific ones. He was a founding member of the Société Héliographique in 1851 and of the Société Française de Photographie in 1854. Like his scientific work, his photography was quickly forgotten upon his death, but has begun to attract new respect and recognition. It does this through fundamental courses in the respective disciplines and through specialized programs in GIS, energy, hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, certification in GIS, certification in Geophysics, and certification in nuclear power plant (NPP) operations. For students in technical areas, the department endeavors to provide the background necessary for success in their chosen profession. For non-technical majors, the department strives to enlighten students concerning some of the basic realities of our universe and to instill in them an appreciation of the methods of scientific inquiry and the impact of science on our modern world. In addition to our undergraduate degrees and minors, we also offer an interdisciplinary graduate program in Petrophysics. Students majoring or minoring in the Department of Physics and Geosciences should plan the course work so that it will best support their career and educational goals.
