Like a watched pot never boiling, once you decide to grow your hair out, it can seem like a never- ending process. There are some aspects that are in your control, however, so follow these tips and you’ll maximize your hair’s natural speed of growth. -more- 1 Here are Five Tips on Achieving a Successful Grow Out from Jessica McGuinty, CEO and founder of Jessicurl. 1. Diet. Don’t neglect your diet. You need to nourish your hair from the inside out. Make sure to get adequate nutrition, and supplement with biotin, as it has been shown to increase hair growth. Jessica can attest to this personally. A few months after starting to take biotin, she found she was having to touch up her roots more often because her hair was growing noticeably faster. It is also important that your diet contains enough protein and fats, as with too little of either it can become dry, brittle and more prone to breakage. 2. Be gentle. As you grow out your hair, you want to avoid anything that will cause the ends to break off. This means limited brushing and combing. Curly hair really shouldn’t be brushed when it’s dry as it will make it frizz and kill your curl definition. You can sufficiently detangle with a wide-toothed comb in the shower while the hair is saturated in conditioner. The conditioner will create slip that allows the comb to glide through without snagging or breaking. Start at the bottom and gently work your way up. 3. Limit heat styling. If you need to use heat tools to dry your hair faster, be sure your blow dryer has a diffuser on it to keep the hair from getting blown all over. It’s really best to avoid flat ironing altogether as it will really dry out your hair and lead to breakage. If you have to do it, try to limit it to two times a week. The goal is to keep the hair as moisturized as possible throughout the process. 4. Moisturize it! Soft hair is healthy hair, and healthy hair grows faster. Once a week do a deep conditioning treatment for at least 30 minutes to infuse your hair with more moisturize than it gets daily. Regular scalp massages are also recommended as it gets the blood flowing to your scalp and helps stimulate growth. Jessicurl Stimulating Scalp Massage Oil was created for exactly this purpose. By eating right, treating your hair gently and giving it lots of moisture and TLC, you’ll notice it growing in no time! 5) Download the Curls on the Go mobile app: The best accessory for summer is the NEW, free app, Curls on the Go™. ABTRACT AFRICANA WOMEN'S STUDIES WILBURN, SHENETHA L. B.A. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, 1997 DECONSTRUCTION OF STEREOTYPES AND MEDIATED MESSAGES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SITCOMS Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May, 2002 This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view. The genre, which began with the arrival of Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) on Fox Broadcasting Network, focuses on portrayals of different subsets of teenagers in their school, family and interpersonal lives. Sometimes called the “teen soap opera,” the genre is subject to the scrutiny and dismissiveness often reserved for media located in the realm of women’s entertainment. Through comparative discourse and textual analysis bounded in socio-cultural consideration of each temporal cycle, this thesis asserts that close attention to this genre can valuably articulate approaches to racial representational strategies.

JUST FOR LAUGHS: AN ANALYSIS OF 21ST CENTURY AFRICAN AMERICAN SITUATIONAL COMEDIES A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Communication, Culture and Technology By Natanya Bobbie Mitchell, B.A. Washington, DC May 2, 2005 JUST FOR LAUGHS: AN ANALYSIS OF 21ST CENTURY AFRICAN AMERICAN SITUATIONAL COMEDIES Natanya Bobbie Mitchell, B.A. Thesis Advisors: Diana Owen, PhD and Matthew Tinkcom, PhD ABSTRACT There have been studies regarding the roles and stereotypes of African Americans in the American entertainment industry. Most of these studies have been expository pieces, stating the stereotypes portrayed and adopted by actors and actresses. It has been reasoned that the cause of stereotyping within the entertainment industry is the underlying, and sometimes blatant, racism of American society. This theory definitely has been corroborated, but there is more that needs to be analyzed. Besides the reasoning behind the stereotypes, this thesis plans to look at the evolution of the stereotypes in African American situational comedies as well as the ideological institutions and theories that help to maintain the status quo of the entertainment industry. Mass media is one of the many reflections of the culture and society in which it is located. This statement is no less true for American society. Throughout American society’s transformations and revolutions, its’ media has also gone through ii an evolution of its’ own. African Americans’ trials and tribulations in discovering not only themselves, but also their place in the world of American entertainment is one that was mirrored on the television screen.

  • How the Image of the Female Hip-Hop Journalist Brought the ’Hood to Mainstream America
How the Image of the Female Hip-Hop Journalist Brought the ’Hood to Mainstream America By Kimberly Wynne “Just throw your hands in the air/ And wave ’em like you just don’t care/And if you’re ready to party/ On the count of three/ Everybody say ‘Oh yeah,’” commands the performer. “Oh yeah,” replies a screaming crowd of nameless faces. This scene is typical of any hip-hop concert—an overcrowded, smoke-filled room filled with screaming fans, a sweaty performer writhing to a pulsating beat, and members of his entourage belting out song lyrics and commands for an audience to follow. While this scene may excite the average person, for a hip-hop journalist, this is work. The life of a hip-hop journalist seems glamorous. In popular culture, it is portrayed as endless nights of club-hopping, schmoozing with rappers and big-name celebrities, and doing interviews in stretch limousines while drinking bottles of expensive champagne. But this isn’t so, especially for a female hip-hop journalist. In the TV series Living Single which aired from 1993 to 1998 and in the movie Brown Sugar which debuted in movie theaters in 2002, the image of the female hip-hop journalist is turned upside down. Her nights are spent alone, pining away for an unavailable, male best friend who only sees her as his “sister.” To gain credibility in the male-dominated industry of hip-hop, the female reporters trade in their femininity for baseball caps, baggy jeans, and sneakers. They are the constant subject of sexual The Female Hip-Hop Journalist Wynne 2 advances and male chauvinism—a chauvinism that women in hip-hop call standard in a musical genre where women are objectified and treated as shiny, new accessories to be hung like jewelry from a performer’s neck.

Breaking All the Rules: An Examination of Queen Latifah’s Representations and Depictions Associated with the Black Female Body in Film Submitted by Angelica Cooper As part of a tutorial in Cultural Studies and Psychology March 24, 2006 Chatham College Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1 Acknowledgement The past four years here at Chatham College has been a roller coaster ride. I would like to thank every individual who has helped me to get to where I am today; a Chatham College graduate. First and foremost I would like to thank the only Heavenly Father above, Jesus Christ. Though sometimes He pushes you to the limit, He does not give you anymore than you can handle. I would like to thank my mother Diane Cooper and my father Ricardo Cooper Sr. for raising me to be the woman I am today. You guys did a pretty good job. Thank you for all of your continued support in all of the successes and disappointments I have undergone in my past 21 years on this earth. Thank you to my Uncle Conrad Bricker and Jerry Potts. Without you two I would not have been able to make it this far here at Chatham College. I appreciate your faith and trust in my decision making and your continued support of my dreams. To all of my close friends, I must say that I would not have made it this far without your friendships. They mean the world to me more than you could ever imagine. Sister Brandee S. Walker, Sister Rochelle Butler, April Clowney Reynolds (Fwiend), and Careema Bell.
