TV LAND ORDERS FIFTH SEASON OF HIT SITCOM “HOT IN CLEVELAND” STARRING VALERIE BERTINELLI, JANE LEEVES, WENDIE MALICK AND BETTY WHITE Pick-Up Brings Series Past 100 Episode Mark New York, NY – March 20, 2013 – TV Land has renewed “Hot in Cleveland” for a fifth season, it was announced today by Larry W. Jones, President, TV Land. The 24-episode order brings the series to a total of 104 episodes. This past January, CBS Television Distribution announced that it has sold “Hot in Cleveland” to TV stations in 92% of the United States for a September 2014 launch. The series stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White. “This is an incredible milestone for the show and for TV Land,” said Jones. “To have our first scripted sitcom make it to the syndication level is a huge accomplishment. We have a brilliant creative team both in front of and behind the camera. We are so proud to be on this exciting ride with them.” Series to date, “Hot in Cleveland” has averaged 2.8 million total viewers (Nielsen: Live+7, 68 premiere telecasts, 6/16/10-2/13/13). New episodes return on Wednesday, June 19th at 10pm ET with a LIVE telecast of the premiere episode. The fifth season will start shooting this Fall. Archive Study Guide: LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER TELEVISION: SITCOMS AND EPISODIC DRAMAS ARCHIVE STUDY GUIDE The representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities on television is marked by a history of stereotypes and inexplicable invisibility. By the 1970s, gay media-watch groups communicated their concerns to the television industry and a sense of cooperation began to emerge between the LG BT community and broadcasters. During the 1980s, the AIDS crisis and resulting prejudices ushered in a new era of problematic and offensive portrayals. In the late 1990s, Ellen Degeneres' landmark coming out, (both in real- life, and through the character she portrayed in her sitcom), generated much controversy and discussion, ultimately paving the way for well -developed gay characters in prominent primetime TV roles. Despite such advances, stereotypes continue to resurface and perpetuate, and the full diversity of the LGBT community is more often than not underrepresented in the mass media. This is only a partial list – consult the Archive Research and Study Center for additional titles, including relevant materials held in the Outfest Legacy Collection. Chances are, you have never heard of neuro- fibromatosis. Three years ago, neither had I, and neither had my wife. It wasn't until Emma was diagnosed with NF that we became aware of its existence. Since then we have learned that it is one of the most common genetic disorders. One in every 3,000 babies is born with NF. Neurofibromatosis can affect any family. Imagine an unpredictable disease that causes tumors to form on your nerves, sometimes resulting in disfigurement, paralysis, deafness, blindness or cancer. In the wrong place even benign tumors can be fatal. Despite decades of research, there is still no cure for NF, and treatments are largely inadequate. But there is hope. The Neurofibromatosis Network is a national non-profit whose mission is to provide services to the NF community and to promote federal funding for NF research. My wife and I have made it our mission to raise awareness and support for those living with NF. That is where you come in. All we are asking is that you take a few minutes to create a doodle and sign it. The money raised at auction could make a world of difference to the 100,000 people living with this disorder, including Emma. ABTRACT AFRICANA WOMEN'S STUDIES WILBURN, SHENETHA L. B.A. HAMPTON UNIVERSITY, 1997 DECONSTRUCTION OF STEREOTYPES AND MEDIATED MESSAGES IN AFRICAN-AMERICAN SITCOMS Advisor: Dr. Josephine Bradley Thesis dated May, 2002 This study examines the images of African Americans in black-themed sitcoms and mediated messages presented here. The study was based on the premise that the images of African Americans on television sitcoms are one dimensional and comedic. A content analysis approach was used to analyze various television sitcoms. Definitions were used to determine what type of image existed using the foundation provided by Donald Bogle and Stewart Hall. The researcher found that although many of the African-American-themed sitcoms investigated represented traditional stereotypical images, there were mediated messages in these sitcoms, which offered a new and different perspective on African Americans. This suggests that African-American images on black-themed sitcoms are moving forward. Additionally, the researcher found that sitcoms depicting African-American life from a comedic point-of-view seem to be more acceptable in popular culture than those which depict life from a dramatic and/or realistic point-of-view.
