"Stepping Stones": Women and Political Rights n 1784 an Order-in-Council at the Court of St. James in I London created the province of New Brunswick by separating the newly defined territory from the province of Nova Scotia. An influx of Loyalist refugees a year earlier had so augmented the population of the region, already peopled with Micmacs, Maliseets and reestablished Acadians, and had so increased demands for land grants that the colonial government in Halifax found the region difficult to administer efficiently, especially at such a distance. Some of the newly arrived Loyalists, impatient with the slowness of the Halifax government and displeased with sharing Nova Scotia with peoples they considered less loyal than themselves to the British crown, began agitating for their own administration. England was convinced. A new government was in order. A new province.' Born not of revolution - either military or ideological - the administrative creation hardly signaled an attempt at building a wholly new society. Rather, it reaffirmed the continued presence of English legal and political tradition in the region. This tradition, distinguished like other European legal and political systems by values based on male dominance of family and state,2 was to shape the lives of women and men of diverse cultures now living in the new province.3 What did the creation of the province signify in political terms to the women of the province - to the original women, theMicmacs and the Maliseets; to the reestablished Acadian women; to the recently established Black women;4 and to the newly arrived and diverse Loyalist women? Although the question requires us to evaluate the situation of 18th century women with 20th century criteria, we can nevertheless affirm that for even the most elitely placed of these women, the establishment of a new political order in the region did not improve or even alter women's status. -

The diminutive locomotive, 1970, is similar to the sleeping cars recently acquired by the B.C. completed by EMD on Aug. 2, 1940, serial no. 1134, is a Model 40. It was Transportation Museum (see Short Items). The eight section, two acquired from EMD's La Grange, Illinois plant in Feb., 1951. The car, the last of its class remaining on the TTC restoration at the Edmonton Radial Railway Society Museum, on Sept. 2, roster, was being trucked to Birmingham, Alabama, from whose transit 1981, some 30 years after its withdrawal from service. Like many street system the 1947-built Pullman PCC was bought in 1953. Updated January 2021 Alliston In 1847 British immigrant William Fletcher settled and built a mill on the Boyne River around which the Town of Alliston eventually developed. The Memorial Library was opened in 1924 by Sir Frederick Banting, who was born and raised in Alliston and won the Nobel Prize in 1923 as co-discoverer of insulin. The establishment of Stevenson Memorial Hospital in 1928 was made possible by donations from grocery store founder Theodore Pringle Loblaw who named the hospital for his grandparents. The area of present-day Riverdale Park and Museum on the Boyne was home to the fairgrounds and a racetrack and has been the focal point of many community activities for more than a century. Museum on the Boyne 250 Fletcher Cres, Alliston The museum was originally built in 1914, as the women’s exhibit hall for the Alliston Fair. Where you see Riverdale Park now is where the fairgrounds were. The building continued to be used for the Agricultural Fair until the 1940s. In the 1930s the Lion’s club installed the wooden floor you see today and the Museum on the Boyne Collection building was used as a dance hall. During WWII it was used by the Dorothea Knitting Mill, which hired local women to knit The Museum scarves for the war movement. turned 60 in In 1960 it became the South 2020! Simcoe Pioneer Museum, and today is now known as the Museum on the Boyne. -
