FACT SHEET October 2007 DISCOVERY (STS-120)

SpaceshuttleDiscovery’supcoming14daymission,designatedSTS120,willtake intoaconnectingmodulethatwillincreasetheInternationalSpaceStation’sinte riorspace.Node2,knownasHarmony,willprovideattachmentpointsforEuropean andJapaneselaboratorymodules,tobeinstalledlaterthisyearandearlynextyear, respectively.Theshuttlealsowilldeliveranewcrewmemberandbringbackanother oneafterafivemonthmission.TheDiscoverycrewwillmovethestation’sP6truss segmentandarraystotheirpermanentpositionattheveryendoftheleftsideofthe station’sbackbone,ortruss.Thearrayshavebeenattachedtothemiddleofthetruss forthepastsevenyears,actingasatemporarypowersystem.Therearefivespace walksscheduled,includingonetoevaluateashuttletilerepairtechnique. TheSTS120patchreflectstheroleofthemissioninthefutureofthespaceprogram.Theshuttlepayloadbay carriesHarmony,thestation’sdoorwaytothefutureinternationallaboratories.Thestarontheleftrepresentsthe station;theredpointsrepresentthecurrentlocationoftheP6array.ThegoldpointsrepresenttheP6solar arrayinitsnewlocation,unfurledandproducingpowerforscienceandlifesupport.Ontheright,themoonand canbeseenrepresentingthefutureofNASA.TheconstellationOrionrisesinthebackground,symbolizing NASA'snewexplorationvehicle.Throughall,theshuttlerisesupandaway,leadingthewaytothefuture. Spacewalks: Eachwilllastapproximately6.5hours. (PressKit,p.51) • Onflightday4,Wheelock,ridingonthestation’sroboticarm,willremovetheSbandAntennaStructural AssemblyfromtheZ1trussanddeliverittoDiscovery’spayloadbayforreturntoEarth.WheelockandPa razynskiwillworkinthebaytoprepareHarmonyforremoval.Oncecomplete,thestation’sarmwilltake HarmonyfromtheshuttleandbeginmovingittowarditspositiononUnity.Next,Parazynskiwilltransfer fluidlinesfromtheP6trusstoZ1. • Onflightday6,withthestation’sarmgrabbingP6,ParazynskiandTaniwilldisconnectcables,grounding strapsandboltsfromthetrusstoremoveitfromZ1.TheroboticarmthenwillremoveP6forrelocation. TaniwillpreparetheradiatoronS1trusstobedeployedfromthegroundlater.Hewillthenrerouteelectri callinesforP6onceit’sreinstalled.ThewillworkonexternaloutfittingofHarmony. • Onflightday8,ParazynskiandWheelockwillassistwiththeroboticarmattachmentofP6initsnewloca tiononP5.ParazynskiwillpreparetheP6radiatorfordeploymentfromthegroundlater.Hethenwillrecon figureelectricalconnectorsthatallowedthegroundtodeploytheS1radiatorsearlierinthemission. • Onflightday10,ParazynskiandWheelockwillevaluatetheShuttleTileAblator54,orSTA54,material andatilerepairablatordispenserforuseasaspaceshuttlethermalprotectionsystemrepairtechnique. TheTileRepairAblatorDispenser,orTRAD,issimilartoacaulkgun.ParazynskiwilluseTRADtomix andsquirtouttheSTA54materialintoholesinseveraldemonstrationtiles.Therepairedsampleswillbe returntoEarthforextensivetesting. • Onflightday11,Expedition16crewmembersPeggyWhitsonandYuriMalenchenkowillprepareforthe permanentinstallationofHarmonyonthePressurizedMatingAdapter2.Theyalsowilltransfertools neededforfuturespacewalks.

FACTS & FIGURES • STS120isthe120thspaceshuttleflight,the34thflightforspaceshuttleDiscoveryandthe23rdflighttothe station. • Thismissionincludesthemostnumberofspacewalksconductedwhiletheshuttleisdockedtothestation. • Thisisthefirsttimefemalecommanderswillleadshuttleandspacestationmissionsatthesametime. AstronautPeggyWhitsonisthecommanderofthestation’sExpedition16mission. • SincetheshuttlewillbedockedtoanexistingadapterportwhereHarmonyismeanttoattach,thenodewill beinstalledinatemporaryspotontheUnitynode.Thestationcrewwillmoveitaftertheshuttleleaves. • BuiltinItalyfortheUnitedStates,Harmonyisa23.6by14.5footpassagewaywithapressurized volumeof2666cubicfeet.Thenodeweighs31,500poundsatlaunch. • HarmonywillbethefirstnewU.S.pressurizedcomponenttobeaddedtothestationsincethe QuestAirlockwasattachedtooneofUnity'ssixberthingportsin2001. • Harmonywasnamedinanationwideacademiccompetition.Sixdifferentschoolssubmitted “Harmony.”StudentsfromeachschoolwillattendDiscovery’slaunch. • LukeSkywalker’slightsaberwillbeflownonDiscoveryinhonorofthe30thanniversaryoftheStarWars franchise. • Nearly17,000NASAcivilservantsandcontractorsacrossthecountrycontributetotheagency’sSpace ShuttleProgram.
