(Intermission) LINK THE THARP PROJECT (12 Minutes) Preview Performance The Tharp Project, an artistic collaboration between Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Choreography by Mario Alberto Zambrano and internationally renowned American choreographer Twyla Tharp, has expanded the Costume Design by Maria Fenski company's repertoire with several classic works by Tharp including The Fugue, Sue's Leg, Lighting Design by Todd L. Clark Baker's Dozen, The Golden Section, Nine Sinatra Songs, Fait Accompli and Tharp's first Music by and Foday Musa Suso original work for HSDC, / Remember Clifford. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is honored to play a vital role in the history of American dance by preserving the Tharp Jennita Russo, Joseph Mooradian, Ron De Jesus legacy for audiences worldwide. Foundation (Short Pause) Prince Charitable Trusts Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund THE ENVELOPE Anonymous (12 minutes) LOU CONTE (Founder and Artistic Director) began dance lessons as a child in DuQuoin, Choreography by David Parsons Illinois. A zoology major at Southern Illinois University, Mr. Conte returned to dance in 1960, Cosfume Design by Judy Wirkula inspired by Marie Hale, current artistic director of Ballet Florida. After Mr. Conte studied in Lighting by Howell Binkley Florida, New York and at the Ellis-DuBoulay School in Chicago, his career took him to Broadway Music by Gioacchino Rossini where in 1964, at the age of 22, he performed in the chorus of Bob 's How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Other Broadway credits include Cabaret and Mame, both in Geoff Myers, New York and on the road. After 13 months in Europe with The George Reich Ballet, Mr. Conte Mary Nesvadba, Krista Ledden returned to Chicago in the mid-1970s to establish the Lou Conte Dance Studio, and in 1977 Gregory Sample, Joseph P. Pantaleon, Meredith Dincolo, Cheryl Mann founded Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. The company has received popular and critical praise throughout the world, including accolades from the late Fred Astaire, who after seeing HSDC's first television special, said it contained "some of the greatest dancing" he had seen in years. Yates Arts Advocacy Award and the University Club of Chicago's Artistic Achievement Award in 1995. NA FLORESTA (The Forest) GAIL KALVER (Executive Director) a native Chicagoan, joined HSDC in 1984. She received (22 minutes) music degrees from the University of Illinois and Chicago Musical College. Ms. Kalver founded the Windy City Wind Ensemble, and performed with the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera and Grant Park Symphony. She joined the Ravinia Festival staff in 1976, where she was associate Choreography by Nacho Duato manager until joining HSDC. Ms. Kalver was music consultant to the Peabody award-winning Lighting Design by Nicolas Fischtel National Radio Theatre. She has served on the board of Dance/USA, the Chicago Dance Cosfume Design fay Nacho Duato Coalition and on numerous funding panels. Ms. Kalver currently serves on the boards of the Sef Design by Walter Nobbe Illinois Arts Alliance, Chicago Dancers United and on the Arts Advisory Councils of the Arts Music fay Heitor Villa-Lobos & Wagner Tiso Business Council and Bowen High School in Chicago. Ms. Kalver is the recipient of the Chicago Maria Fenske David Gomez Dance Coalition's 1988 Ruth Page Award and was recognized by Today's Chicago Woman in Laura Haney Gomez Joseph Mooradian 1996. She danced with River North Dance Company for three years before joining HSDC in May 1997. BRIAN McGINNIS (Worcester, Ma) before joining HSDC in 1997, Brian graduated from The CHRISTINE CARRILLO SIMPSON (South Holland, IL) a native Chicagoan, is in her ninth with a BFA. season with HSDC. He has performed in musical MARIO ALBERTO ZAMBRANO (Houston, TX) studied at the High School for the Performing theater and holds a BA in Performing Arts from Oklahoma City University. He joined HSDC in Arts in Houston and the Academy. He has danced with the Houston Ballet, June 1996. Corpus Christi Ballet Company and the Delia Stewart Dance Company. He was named a 1994 Presidential Scholars in the Arts and received a 1995 Princess Grace Award. Although offered JOSEPH MOORADIAN (Dearborn, Ml) has been dancing professionally since 1984. PATRICK MULLANEY (Chicago, IL), winner of the 1988 Ruth Page Award for "Outstanding Dancer of the Year", began his training as a gymnast. He attended Illinois State University and danced with the University Dance Theatre before joining Joseph Holmes in 1985. He is on the faculty of the Chicago National Masters Association and has taught master classes in the U.S. CHOREOGRAPHERS and Mexico. He joined HSDC in 1992. NACHO DUATO (Choreographer) was born in , Spain, in 1957, and trained with the GEOFF MYERS (Si. Louis, MO) rejoined HSDC in 1997 following a three-year hiatus. He has Rambert School in London, Maurice Bejart's Mundra School in Brussels and the Alvin Alley performed with the Verona Ballet, River North, Milwaukee Dance Theatre and Ruth Page's American Dance Center in New York. In 1980 Mr. Duato joined the Cullberg Ballet in Nutcracker. Mr. Myers danced with HSDC from 1984-1993 and was a Ruth Page nominee in and a year later Jiri Kylian brought him to the Nederlands Dans Theater in Holland 1993. He has since completed a BA in TV/video production. where he was named Resident Choreographer in 1988. Since June 1990, Mr. Duato has been Artistic Director of Compama Nacional de Danza (Spain), where he created the following works: MARY NESVADBA (Houston, TX) studied and danced at the Fort Worth Ballet. Ms. Nesvadba Concierto Madrigal, Opus Plot, Empty, Coming Together, Mediterrania, Cautiva and Tabulae. spent two summers with the School of American Ballet in NYC and three years with the Houston Ballet School, where she received the Michael Wismond Award for most outstanding student. PANTALEON (Son Diego, CA) began his training at age 19 at San Diego State Pilobolus. In 1980, he co-founded Momix and in 1986 he co-founded ISO Dance. Mr. University. He has worked with Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, the PASACAT Performing Ezralow has created original works for HSDC, Batsheva Dance Co. of Israel, , Arts Company, River North Dance Company, Chicago Repertory Dance Ensemble, Barat Rudolf Nureyev and London Contemporary Dance Co., among others. Mr. Ezralow works College Repertory Dance Ensemble and The James Kelly Choreography Project. He joined extensively in film and television in the U.S. and Europe, with such artists as Lina Wertmullerand HSDC in 1993. Mauro Bolognini. He has choreographed music videos for Sting, U2 and David Bowie. He recently toured Europe performing his one-man multi-media show Mandala. JOSEF PATRICK (Baltimore, MD) began his dance studies at the age of ten with Ellen Young. After graduating from the School for the Arts in Baltimore, he performed with Walt Disney World DAVID PARSONS (choreographer) was born in Illinois and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. Productions, Burt Reynolds' Jupiter Theater and Southern Ballet Theater in Florida. Mr. Patrick Mr. Parsons first studied dance with Cliff Kirwin and Paul Chambers. From 1978-1987 Mr. joined HSDC in 1985 and won a Chicago Dance Coalition Ruth Page Award in 1994 for his Parsons was a leading dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. Mr. JOHN ROSS (Portland, OR) studied on scholarship at the Academy of Ballet Oregon and the Parsons is a three-time recipient of Fellowship Grants from the NEA. Mr. Parsons has been . He has performed with the Pacific Northwest Ballet, Ballet Chicago featured on numerous television productions, most notably Alive From Off Center and Dance in and Oregon Ballet Theatre. Mr. Ross most recently danced with the River North Dance America on PBS and A&E's Breakfast With the Arts. JENNITA RUSSO (Elgin, IL) studied dance with Donna Muzio and trained at the National TWYLA THARP (Choreographer) has been making dance for thirty years. Academy of Arts in Champaign, IL, and the Pennsylvania Ballet School. She has danced with the Off Center Ballet in New York and Feld Ballets/NY. From 1991-1994, Ms. Russo was with Pennsylvania Ballet under the direction of Christopher d'Amboise. She joined HSDC in 1994.

GREGORY SAMPLE (Louisville, KY) began dancing at age four. He is currently completing his BFA in contemporary dance at North Carolina School of the Arts and will graduate in May 1998. He joined HSDC in June 1997. BORDERS* American Arts Alliance
