In these works Duato displays his command of movement and his ability to intertwine modern and classical dance techniques . In addition to this synthesis of techniques, Compafifa Nacional de Danza aims to capture a unique Mediterranean flavor, forging a distinct identity for the company and its repertoire. According to The New York Times, "A balletic body, in [Duato's] hands, is an articulate body . His dancers use their considerable training to stretch toward perfection as easily as they use it to create small, wonderfully expressive messes. This is wonderful stuff." Four performances by Compaiiia Nacional de Danza will take place in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Ave) on Oct 16, and 18-20 at 7:30pm. Tickets-priced at $20, 35, 50, and 60--can be purchased through BAM Ticket Services at 718.636.4100 or at www.BAM.org. The program consists of three pieces : Por Vos Muero , Castrati, and White Darkness. Set to a Garcilaso de la Vega poem, Por Vos Muero (For Thee, I Die) explores-the formal, yet deeply sensual Spanish court dances of the 15th and 16th centuries. Accompanied by music of Spain's Golden Age-from composers Mateu Flecha ; Pedro Guerrero ; and Antonio Martin y Coll-Pos Vos Muero conveys the vital role dance played in the period's social and courtship rituals. According to the Guardian, "Dance is here the language of love and solitude, and fragments of poetry spliced with the musical score hint at the privacy of its expression." Performed to excerpts of Vivaldi choral works, Castrati is a turbulent ensemble piece which culminates in the harrowing ambush of a boy by eight men dressed in black. The work is named th th for the revered, castrated male singers of the 16 - 18 centuries , whose soprano voices were used to replace those of women banned from sacred and secular performance. Contrasting the vivacity of the first two pieces, the tone of White Darkness-performed in its U.S. premiere- is somber and meditative , as it compassionately reflects on the torment of drug addiction. The piece is set to British musician/composer Karl Jenkins' Adiemus Variations and String Quartet No. 2. El Mundo (Spain) commented, " .. with praiseworthy simplicity [Duato] has profiled an intense, extremely beautiful poetic elegy dedicated to his sister ... the choreography is packed with striking, overwhelming images, while at the same time wrapped in a halo of unusual beauty ." Born in Valencia, Spain, Nacho Duato began his career in professional ballet, after training at London's Rambert School, the Mudra School in Brussels , and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York. He joined Sweden 's Cullberg Ballet in 1980 and a year later, Jiri Kylian brought him to the Nederlands Dans Theater. Nacho Duato pursued choreography, and was named Resident Choreographer for Nederlands Dans Theater in 1988. Duato's works have been incorporated into the repertories of numerous international dance companies, including Cullberg Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Paris Opera Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Deutsche Opera Ballet, Australian Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet Gulbenkian, Finnish Opera Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre. He was named a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1995, and was awarded a Golden Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts in Spain in 1998. Duato has been the artistic director of Compaiiia Nacional de Danza since 1990. The Compaiiia Nacional de Danza, based in Madrid, was founded in 1979 under its original name, Ballet Nacionalde EspanaClasico. As ArtisticDirector , Duatohas infusedthe companywith a more contemporary style, giving it a distinctive character without neglecting classical precepts. The Festival originated as a fall series entitled "The Next Wave/New Masters." In November 1981 , Philip Glass ' new opera, Satyagraha, was presented as one of four productions under the Next Wave moniker. A more ambitious series followed in 1982, including a two-evening performance work by Laurie Anderson-United States: Parts I N . From the seeds of these two rich years grew an idea for something bolder and riskier. The Next Wave Festival , dedicated to exciting new works and cross-disciplinary collaborations by promising young artists , was launched in October 1983. Pieces that previously had been presented in downtown lofts and small "black box" theaters were staged in the exquisite 2,100- seat BAM Opera House (later renamed the Howard Gilman Opera House) , a renovated 1,000-seat playhouse (the Helen Carey Playhouse, now home to BAM Rose Cinemas) , and a flexible 300- seat performance venue (the Lepercq Space). In 1987, with Peter Brook 's Mahabharata, BAM opened another large stage-the 900-seat Majestic Theater-since renamed the Harvey Theater in honor of Harvey Lichtenstein (former president and executive producer). Since 1999 , BAM has been led by President Karen Brooks Hopkins and Executive Producer Joseph V. Melillo, who curates the Next Wave Festival and served as the producer of the inaugural festival.
