SUMMARY This thesis is a theological and historical study of the Swedish missionary and evangelist Peter Otto Helger Witt (1848-1923), who served as the Church of Sweden Mission's fjrst missionary and as such launched its work a.mongst the Zulu people of Southern Africa in the 1870S before growing disillusioned with his national Lutheran tradition and, after following a tortUOl;JS spiritual path through generally increasing theological subjectivity, eventually becoming a loosely affiliated Pentecostal evangelist in Scandinavia. Undoubtedly owing to the embarrassment he caused the Church of Sweden Mission by resigning from it while it was in a formative stage, but also to tension between him and its leaders, Witt has never received his due in the historiography of Swedish missions. For that matter, his role in Scandinavian nonconformist religious movements for nearly a third of a ) century beginning in the early 1890S is a largely untold chapter in the ecclesiastical history of the region.

Michael Jonas, PhD Chair of Modern History Helmut-Schmidt-University Hamburg, Germany E-mail: [email protected] Conference: Neutrals at war, 1914-1918. Comparative and transnational perspectives, Amsterdam, 20 Nov 2015 Three Kings Posturing? Royal diplomacy and Scandinavian neutrality in the First World War A. Introduction One of the major events for the neutral powers of Northern Europe in the initial stages of the First World War was a meeting at Malmö in Southern Sweden on the 18th and 19th of December 1914. This gathering, promptly known – and even contemporarily staged – as the Three Kings’ Meeting (Swed. Trekungamötet), brought the Swedish king, Gustav V of Sweden, together with his counterparts Haakon VII of Norway and Christian X of Denmark. The meeting was accompanied by political talks among the foreign ministers of the three Scandinavian states, Knut Wallenberg for Sweden, Nils Ihlen for Norway and Erik Scavenius for Denmark. The summit was widely reported, almost amounting to a minor sensation in both the national, the Scandinavian and the international press. It had a twofold aim, legitimising the governments’ neutral policies in the war in their respective domestic arenas and coordinating Scandinavia’s widely differing neutrality policies and political orientations vis-à- vis the major belligerent powers. Malmö built upon previous efforts at collaborating on neutrality policy – like the negotiations prior to releasing neutrality regulations in late 1912 – and was followed by a second meeting of the monarchs in November 1917 in Kristiania and regular consultations at ministerial level. All this suggests an importance that contemporaries clearly sensed. In the course of the 20th century, however, historiography relegated the meeting more or less to the side-lines, along with the more general indifference towards the Scandinavian experience of the First World War in both research and the public.

ESSHC Valencia 2016 Session Anticlericalism and Criticism of Religion in Scandinavia in a Transnational Perspective In defence of the fundamental values of society: an analysis of blasphemy trials and debates in Sweden around 19001 By Yvonne Maria Werner, Lund University Critique of religion and its consequences is a topical theme. The attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris in January 2015 made the Western media establishment to rally in defence of freedom of expression, but it also raised the question of the limits of this freedom. There are always defined limits to freedom of expression, which change over time and are adapted to the political system that prevails. Ideas that in various ways question or threaten the current value system are not accepted. In Western society, racism is an example of such an illicit opinion, while blasphemy and criticism of the state-sanctioned religion took the same position in pre- and early modern society community – and in today’s Islamic states such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. In my paper, I will discuss the blasphemy phenomenon and its changing meaning and position in Sweden around the turn of the century 1900 in a European perspective. In October 1889 the Liberal student association Verdandi organised a public discussion in Uppsala on freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
