This course explores the ways how film studies have been influenced by male subjectivity and psychoanalysis, and investigates the ways in which studies of male subjectivity has informed cinema in Turkey, either through aesthetics or plotting and characterization. The course will provide an essential understanding of fundamental concepts of male subjectivity in psychoanalysis and will offer exercise in film analysis. Classes will begin with a film screening, continued by a discussion of concepts, and will conclude by a focus on intersection points of readings and films. By the end of the course, students will be able to develop main skills of analyzing male subjectivity in film, and to develop their own ideas about film in relation to male subjectivity and apply them to further examples.     CLASSICAL MUSIC IN CINEMA The purpose of the course will be to explore and understand the use of classical music in art movies starting with The Birth of a Nation in 1915 up until today. Films will be screened partially, and musical extracts will discussed. The 12 week lectures start with a historical introduction into the utilisation of classical music in the early era of cinema. Diegetic and non-diegetic music and their particular use will then be discussed. A discussion on the effect of leitmotivs and classical music as a device supporting the narrative will follow. After this three-week introduction, we will explore classical music used as leitmotiv and supporting narrative, then films on opera and opera in films, and the use of classical music in period movies. We will then examine the way how specific pieces of music have added to some of the greatest dramas and films of the past. Finally, the course will conclude with a discussion of auteur cinema and cover how seven essential directors have used music in their films; Bunuel, Bresson, Bergman, Pasolini, Kubrick, Godard, Tarkovsky and Fassbinder. Extracts from almost 100 films are intended to be shown and discussed. There will be no requirement for pre-lecture reading, screening or preparation. However, attendance will be obligatory, since grades will only be based on attendance, performance in class and homework in the form of essays. Screenings of assignments will be made in class.     Shopping for Fangs Dir: Quentin Lee and Justin Lin, USA, 1997 A review by Luca Prono, Bologna, Italy Marketed as a manifesto on "GenerAsian X" and representative of a new generation of Asian American film-makers, Shopping for Fangssuccessfully adds a new dimension to the theme of the quest for a hyphenated identity. Most of the characters in the film are apparently completely assimilated to the American ways and do not explicitly brood over the possible clash between their Asian cultural heritage and their present Americanized life-styles. Yet, as the film progresses, it becomes clear that its central characters are living in a phase of transition between different identities. As Edward O'Neill has pointed out, the film itself mirrors self-reflexively this transition in its narrative, one that borrows liberally from such diverse genres as horror, melodrama, thriller and martial arts. Its situations and characters derive from a wide assortment of film icons ranging from John Woo and Quentin Tarantino to Alfred Hitchcock and Brian De Palma, from Kim Novak to Marilyn Monroe. Therefore, Shopping for Fangsaffirms a typically post-modern mode of identity, one that "celebrates the picaresque possibilities of inventing and changing identities, of being different from oneself, of assuming other people's lives and living them as theatrical experience." Set in Los Angeles, the film follows the three parallel, and, for some brief moments, interlocking narratives of Trinh, a lesbian waitress who constantly wears a blond wig and sunglasses, Katherine, an unhappy wife suffering from periods of blackouts and Phil, a lonely accountant working for the corporation of Katherine's husband.

Findley, Advisor Jane Hathaway Alan Beyerchen Copyright By Serdar Poyraz 2010 i Abstract My dissertation, entitled “Science versus Religion: The Influence of European Materialism on Turkish Thought, 1860-1960,” is a radical re-evaluation of the history of secularization in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. I argue that European vulgar materialist ideas put forward by nineteenth-century intellectuals and scientists such as Ludwig Büchner (1824-1899), Karl Vogt (1817-1895) and Jacob Moleschott (1822-1893) affected how Ottoman and Turkish intellectuals thought about religion and society, ultimately paving the way for the radical reforms of Kemal Atatürk and the strict secularism of the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s. In my dissertation, I challenge traditional scholarly accounts of Turkish modernization, notably those of Bernard Lewis and Niyazi Berkes, which portray the process as a Manichean struggle between modernity and tradition resulting in a linear process of secularization. On the basis of extensive research in modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and Persian sources, I demonstrate that the ideas of such leading westernizing and secularizing thinkers as Münif Pasha (1830-1910), Beşir Fuad (1852-1887) and Baha Tevfik (1884-1914) who were inspired by European materialism provoked spirited religious, philosophical and literary responses from such conservative anti-materialist thinkers as Şehbenderzade ii Ahmed Hilmi (1865-1914), Said Nursi (1873-1960) and Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar (1901- 1962).
