ARTS & CULTURE 06 Featured Interview

Thong Chow Ngian Avid nature painter and NParks volunteer

Chow Ngian is a wildlife artist who hopes to showcase and create awareness of the vast variety of beautiful birds found in urbanised Singapore. He held his first solo painting exhibition entitled ‘Singapore Wildlife’ at The Substation Gallery in May 2017, and conducted the ‘Sketching and Watercolour Painting of Birds’ workshop, under nAtuRe connecTion, held in conjunction with Pesta Ubin 2018. His sketch of a Black Baza (Aviceda leuphotes) from the workshop is featured in this booklet on the cover of the Arts & Culture section!

Is painting an in-born talent or can anyone learn to paint like you? Painting is a skill that can be learned. It requires the patience to observe details, to have some basic drawing techniques and the determination to keep trying and learning from successes and mistakes. Chow Ngian demonstrating painting techniques at the 'Sketching and Watercolour Painting of Birds' workshop. What do you do with your artwork? I have a passion for wildlife painting and would like to see this genre of art being appreciated more widely in Singapore. I hope to continue exhibiting and selling my artwork, and would like to educate others through my paintings that we have many beautiful, interesting birds and other wildlife.

For example, my painting entitled ‘Insatiable Hunger’ highlights a lesser-known natural phenomenon called 'brood parasitism', where brood parasites manipulate the host into raising its young instead of their own. Illustrated in the painting is the brood parasitic relationship between the Ashy Tailorbird (Orthotomus ruficeps) and the juvenile Plaintive Cuckoo (Cacomantis merulinus).

What is the painting process like? How do you prepare for it? I always begin by thinking of a story line or message that I want to convey to the audience before I start painting. This includes research on the bird species (such as their behaviours and habitats) that I intend to paint, making preliminary sketches, preparing the canvas, actual painting and evaluating the outcome before putting in the final touches. One of Chow Ngian's paintings entited 'Insatiable Hunger'.
