Dr. Tim Beatley is the Founder and Executive Director of Biophilic Cities and the Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities, in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning, School of Architecture at the University of Virginia. His work focuses on the creative strategies by which cities and towns can bring nature into the daily lives of thier residents, while at the same time fundamentally reduce their ecological footprints and becoming more livable and equitable places. Among the more than variety of books on these subjects, Tim is the author of Biophilic Cities and the Handbook of Bophilic City Planning & Design. The National Parks Board (NParks) of Singapore is committed to enhancing and managing the urban ecosystems of Singapore’s biophilic City in a Garden. NParks is the lead agency for greenery, biodiversity conservation, and wildlife and animal health, welfare and management. The board also actively engages the community to enhance the quality of Singapore’s living environment. Lena Chan is the Director of the National Biodiversity Centre (NBC), NParks, where she leads a team of 30 officers who are responsible for a diverse range of expertise relevant to biodiversity conservation.

The idea for a national garden was planted in 1822 when Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore, developed the first Botanical and Experimental Garden at Fort Canning. In 1859, the Singapore Botanic Gardens was established at the Tanglin site and in the 160 years past, it has flourished from a pleasure garden for the colonial community to a place cherished by all Singaporeans, a botanical institution known internationally. Singapore’s greening journey took root in the 1960s when founding Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew planted a Mempat Tree at Farrer Circus. This kickstarted a national effort for tree planting, sowing the seed of a green home where beautiful parks and green belts would be the birthright of every Singaporean. Today, the intricate lattice of greenery we have woven into the cityscape supports thriving biodiversity and provides residents with a quality living environment. This not only draws the appreciation and marvel of visitors, but has become a part of our national identity.

    EMBARGOED TILL 4.00PM ON 17 APRIL 2018 MEDIA RELEASE NParks celebrates 25 Years of Community Stewardship in Nature Conservation Community can learn more about wetlands and participate in nature conservation efforts 17 April 2018 — The international community is commemorating 25 years of action for biodiversity this year, as part of the International Day of Biological Diversity (IDB). In Singapore, we have adapted the theme “25 Years of Community Stewardship in Nature Conservation” to celebrate active citizenry in nature conservation and the partnerships forged with our volunteers, nature advocacy groups, schools, and citizen scientists, and to encourage the community to join us as stewards of our natural heritage. The National Parks Board (NParks) will be celebrating with a series of activities and programmes. Visitors of all ages can look forward to biodiversity surveys, guided walks and tours at our parks and nature areas. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve will also be kicking off a year-long series of events and activities to celebrate the Reserve’s 25th anniversary. Celebrating 25 Years of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve This year marks the 25th anniversary of Sungei Buloh. The transformation of a nature park into one of the most recognised wetland reserves in the region was made possible due to the shared passion and support from a nationwide community of volunteers, corporations, schools and partners. Since its establishment, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve has been recognised as an ASEAN Heritage Park and is a founding partner of the East-Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership, which was launched in 2006. With the opening of the Reserve’s East Extension in 2014, new features and experiences within the Reserve have enabled visitors to continue enjoying the wetlands while strengthening the conservation of the core of the Reserve.

    Singapore Raptor Report March 2019 Japanese Sparrowhawk, adult female, at West Coast Park, on 29 March 2019, by Norvin Ng Summary for migrant species: In March, 133 raptors of 9 migrant species were recorded. There were 60 Oriental Honey Buzzards Pernis ptilorhyncus, including 13 at Yishun on the 17th, flying northwesterly. The 30 Black Bazas Aviceda leuphotes included a kettle of 12 at Telok Blangah Hill Park on the 24th. Seventeen Chinese Sparrowhawks Accipiter soloensis were recorded, including six at Sungei Buloh on the 23th, apparently on passage migration to the north. Three Jerdon's Bazas Aviceda jerdoni were still wintering in Singapore on the 10th: two at Pasir Ris and one at Pulau Ubin. One Common Buzzard Buteo buteo was observed at Kent Ridge Park on the 10th, possibly on passage and four Grey-faced Buzzards Butastur indicus, were also recorded over the Southern Ridges: three on the 8th at Kent Ridge Park and one on the 13th at Telok Blangah Hill Park. These were recorded by Keita Sin, who spent a number of days observing raptors at the Southern Ridges. Five Peregrine Falcons Falco peregrinus were recorded: singles at Satay by the Bay, Bukit Merah, Pulau Ubin, Kranji Marshes and Telok Blangah Hill Park. Ten Japanese Sparrowhawks Accipiter gularis and three Western Ospreys Pandion haliaetus rounded up the migrant raptors for March.
