It’s this country’s biggest rally and one no summer would be complete without. The Scottish has been running since 1961 and the list of winners is a real who’s who of world rallying. All three of the rallying McRaes: Jimmy, Colin and Alister won it, as did M-Sport World Rally Team boss Malcolm Wilson. And the Finns have had fair success north of Hadrian’s Wall too; Ari Vatanen, Hannu Mikkola, Pentti Airikkala, Simo Lampinen, Mikael Sundstrom and Tapio Laukkanen all took at least one win. Tommi Makinen might have four world titles, but he’s only for an F2 win on the Scottish… The event has evolved down the years and it’s no longer the race up and down the land it once was, but a Dumfries base still offers access to some of the world’s most wonderful woods. Stages like Twiglees and Castle O’er are part of British rallying legend and it’s fantastic to see the best of the British Rally Championship lining up there on Saturday morning. As you’d expect, there’s a bit of a family connection with the Scottish: my father (Fergus Loudon) scored his best result on this rally when he co-drove John Gray to 11th overall in a Group A Ford Sierra Cosworth in 1990. They finished just one place behind a certain Jimmy McRae, taking the award for top privateer crew.

In terms of section 6(1)(a) of the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976 A. That Joy Paula Robson, born 20 October 1961, latterly resident in Portree, Isle of Skye died within Glenurquhart Forest, near Balnain, Highland Region, at approximately 11.00am on 16 February 2013. B. That John Leonard Stern, born 27 November 1942, latterly resident in Bearsden, Glasgow died near to the Leet Bridge, Swinton, Scottish Borders Region, at approximately 16.30 hours on 31 May 2014. C. That Elizabeth Allan, born 18 January 1951, latterly resident in Barrhead, Glasgow died near to the Leet Bridge, Swinton, Scottish Borders Region, at approximately 16.30 hours on 31 May 2014. D. That Iain John Provan, born 10 January 1950, latterly resident in Barrhead, Glasgow died near to the Leet Bridge, Swinton, Scottish Borders Region, at approximately 16.30 hours on 31 May 2014. 2. In terms of section 6(1)(b) of the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976 A. The cause of death of Joy Paula Robson was the sustaining of multiple injuries due to a collision with a motorcar (spectator at a car rally).

Not only are the championships coming to a climax For the year (with the exception of Sporting Trials ) but the accounts have to be signed ofF For 2018, and planning for the events and regulations For 2020 have to completed and issued in time For the end of this year. You will Find in this addition oF BTRDA News, our accounts For 2018. The Association Board of Directors have agreed and signed them oFF. You will see that we made a small loss For the year, but it was in line with the budget Forecasts and the Board are confident that For 2019 we shall turn that around into a small profit. In fact we are already at the stage where all sports are putting their budgets in for 2020 and I am very confident that next year will be an excellent one for BTRDA.     Chairman's Chat How expensive can motorsport get ? There is much talk about the mandatory requirement for Frontal Head Restraints for all circuit racing, stage rallying, hill climbs and sprints from 1st January 2016. While competitor safety is obviously paramount this requirement will significantly increase the cost of the sport which may well result in the loss of existing competitors or put off new ones. At a higher level it seems totally wrong to potentially lose the Monza GP because the organisers will not be able to afford the ridiculous fee demanded by Mr Ecclestone. The F1 calendar should include all the classic circuits and not just the ones owned by those who can afford to put vast amounts of money into his huge piggy bank. I have said this before but it‟s time he retired and let someone who has the good of the sport at heart rather than sheer greed.     The Loudon-clear guide to… Nicky Grist Stages We’ve had the Scottish, now it’s time for the Welsh. This weekend’s Nicky Grist Stages is one of the most talked about events in British rallying, not least because it’s recreating something fantastic from years ago. It’s 29 years since Wales hosted a round of the British Rally Championship running a split format with stages on Epynt one day and through the surrounding woods the next day. But this weekend, that classic Tarmac- gravel mix is back on the agenda. The British Rally Championship’s getting back to its halcyon days and Elfyn Evans is turning in a performance worthy of that vintage too. He was superb on the Scottish and last weekend’s World Rally Championship counter, Rally Poland, where he finished second in WRC2. The Nicky Grist will be his third Ford Fiesta R5 outing in as many weeks. He’s certainly not short on seat time – and, don’t forget, he’s got a 100 per cent record at home this year having won the season-opening Mid Wales Stages. This weekend will be an interesting one for Fredrik Åhlin, who doesn’t have masses of four-wheel drive experience on asphalt and even less on Epynt. The military ranges will be a great leveler this weekend; pacenotes will be more important than ever on Sunday’s featureless stages where the road is so tough to read. It’s easy to get drawn in to a big push on Epynt, but that place and those roads can bite.

    Press Information For immediate release PEARSON GRABS MAIDEN WIN ON SPEYSIDE STAGES Duns driver Garry Pearson edged out 2015 ARR Craib Scottish Rally Champion Jock Armstrong by eight seconds to win the 2016 McDonald & Munro Speyside Stages Rally in Elgin. Pearson, co-driven by Robbie Mitchell, won his first ever SRC event at the wheel of his Ford Fiesta R5, extending his championship lead in the process. Pearson was always in amongst the top times, and despite a puncture on SS5 and a near rally ending spin on the final stage he came home to take the win. At the finish in Elgin, he said: “Really good. It was pretty close, we spun it in a fourth gear corner, a bit lucky but we’re happy to be here!” The conditions on the 20th running of the Speyside stages were challenging for the competitors, especially in the opening Cooper Park tests where a pre-stage rain shower had made the tarmac stage very treacherous. However, despite the odd scattering of hail stones, conditions were predominantly dry albeit quite slippy. SS8 Gartly Moor 2 seemed to be a particular favourite, with plenty of drivers exiting the stage with beaming smiles. Jock Armstrong managed a maximum speed of 112mph through the test, so it’s not hard to see why. Quintin Milne described SS8 as “the best stage he had done in five years,” while Ross MacDonald likened it to a “near death experience”, saying it was one of “the best stages ever.” Coming home in second place overall and continuing their battle with Garry Pearson from the Border Counties rally were Jock Armstrong and Paula Swinscoe.
