May the Almighty God bless them all for their endless love and support to me. v ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers‘ perceptions on using Information and communication technology as a tool for teaching and learning in public secondary schools at Butiama District in Mara Region. Specifically, the study explored the availability of ICT tools, teachers‘ skills on the use of ICT and perceptions on the use of ICT as teaching tool in public secondary schools. The study employed descriptive design, while mixed research approach was used. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. About 68 respondents were involved in questionnaire information whereas 4 responded to interview tips thus, making a total of 72 respondents. The study was grounded by the theory of Innovation Diffusion (IDT) by Everrett M. Rogers developed in 1962, and the study also was guided by two models which are the Technological Acceptance Model (TAM) and the IT Implementation Process Model theories. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 16 and summarized using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages and presented in tables, charts and graphs while qualitative data were presented in narratives. The findings of the study indicated that there were different ICT tools in schools which were scarce, and schools are connected to the national grid though they have unreliable electricity. Moreover, the uses of ICT were pointed out by respondents and were identified in levels of agreement. The study also identified that teachers had different perceptions on the use of ICT in teaching and learning in public secondary schools. I have witnessed with my own eyes young mothers dying delivering babies, very many children under five years dying from pneumonia, malaria and diarrhoea. The act and sign of building a dispensary in Matongo is a redemption from death to life for the poor and marginalized community. We live in this valley because we depend on small produce we get from farming… I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the donor TDT for their generous support to Matongo. The staff house has raised up our hope to have our own dispensary soon. We will be healthier, safer and produce many crops. It was prepared by Winrock International, in partnership with Tetra Tech, International Union for Conservation of Nature, Stockholm Environment Institute, and World Resources Institute Executive Summary This water demand assessment was developed for the Water Allocation Plan for the Mara River Basin being carried out by the Sustainable Water Partnership under the United States Agency for International Development. This technical annex presents the outcomes of analyses to estimate future water demand from human and economic activities in the Tanzanian Mara River Basin over the next 5, 10, and 20 years. Information reported here will be combined with data presented separately on water resource availability and the reserve to calculate the water balance to be included in the Mara Water Allocation Plan. The water demand assessment methodology was based on the draft water allocation planning guidelines for Tanzania. Demand values were calculated based on population growth rates, guidelines from the Ministry of Water 2009 Design Manual for Water Supply and Waste Water Disposal, data provided by Tanzanian authorities, input from stakeholders, and standard international practice. An additional 20 percent was added to all sectors except for wildlife to account for losses through leakage and wastage as recommended in the draft guidelines. • For domestic water demand, a growth rate between 2 and 3.5 percent was used to calculate the increase in population for 5, 10 and 20 years. Using 30 liters/person/day, taken as the additional water requirement on top of the 25 liters/person/day water allocated for basic human needs in the reserve, water demand was estimated to be 12,018 m3/day in 2018 and increasing to 20,870 m3/day in 2038.

    THE MARA OUT-OF-SCHOOL CHILDREN EDUCATION PROJECT According to a UNICEF study carried out in 2015, approximately 60,000 children are classified as being out of school in the Mara region of Tanzania. Motivated by this staggering report, the Trust partnered with the government of the Mara Region, Mara Alliance and the Qatar based, Educate a Child programme to make sure that 20,000 out of school children aged 7-17 years are supported to go to school. KEY OBJECTIVES Objective 1: To build the capacity of school governing bodies to identify and reintegrate 20,000 OOSC in primary school in the Mara Region Objective 2: To build the capacity of teachers, school heads, ward, district and regional level government staff to deliver quality primary education in the Mara Region Objective 3: To mobilise an alliance of government, public sector, no-governmental organisations and community based organisations and families to support 20,000 OOSC and their families in primary school in the Mara Region In order to achieve these objectives, the programme proceeded to identify out of school children aged between 7-17 years old and collect detailed information about them and their families. This research enables the programme to design the appropriate support needed to fight barriers that keep children out of school. The research also extended to collecting detailed information about each school. This was done so that the programme can develop appropriate implementation plans and support the government of Mara region and its partners, school committees, the Mara Alliance and the Graça Machel Trust to improve the school environment and remove barriers to schooling that are found in the school.

    CASE STUDY VULNERABILITY PROFILE MARA WETLANDS SUBASWETWETLANDSCATCHMENT OVERVIEW Located at the lower end of the Mara River in Tanzania, adjacent to Lake Victoria, the Mara Wetlands are riverine swampland dominated by papyrus, with a total area ranging from 390 km2 to more than 500 km2, depending on seasonal flooding. Home to a wide array of birds, terrestrial and semi-aquatic mammals, and fish, the wetlands are an important source of habitat for wildlife as well as natural resources for local communities [27]. The wetlands cover four districts of the Mara region – Butiama, Rorya, Tarime and a small portion of Serengeti – which are largely rural (90 percent) and experienced an average population increase of 28 percent between the 2002 and 2012 censuses. Twenty villages surround the wetlands, with a 2012 census population of almost 56,000. Approximately 83 percent of households engage in agriculture as their primary occupation and 98 percent of crops are rainfed [11]. As of 2012, 26.2 percent of the population was below the country’s poverty line [12]. Projected increases in temperature, variability in rainfall, frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall events, and intensity and duration of heat waves and drought events, coupled with high levels of poverty and a reliance on rainfed agriculture, make the communities around the wetlands particularly vulnerable to climate change.
